Chapter 9
I thought Harlan would get angry, but unexpectedly, the frost in his eyes slowly melted, and there was even a trace of amusement in his voice. “Charlene, are you jealous?”
My breath hitched for a moment, but I replied calmly, “No.”
The amusement in his eyes lingered, as if he didn’t believe me
I didn’t bother explaining further, and he finally moved on to business. “Regal Corporation is coming tomorrow. Go over the proposal with Tamara thoroughly–make sure nothing goes wrong this time”
1 instinctively wanted to refuse, but when I looked down, Lcaught sight of the gentle smile on his face. For a moment. I was dazed, as if reality and dreams had overlapped.
As if bewitched, 1 gave a slight nod.
His smile grew even softer. “Go get to work”
It wasn’t until I stepped out of the office that I snapped back to reality, feeling a bit helpless.
When it came to that face of his, I always seemed to have endless patience.
Back in the office, I found Tamara seemingly waiting for me.
I understood immediately–this had been their plan.
Harlan really was going to great lengths to elevate Tamara
I looked at her indifferently. “Harlan asked me to go over the proposal with you.”
A hint of triumph flashed in her eyes. “Thank you, Charlene.”
I nodded and gestured for her to bring a chair over. My tone remained neutral as 1 began explaining.
But she seemed distracted, responding absentmindedly.
Just as my patience was about to run out, she suddenly asked, “Charlene, why are you willing to explain things to me all of a sudden? What did Harlan say to you?”
Annoyed. I replied, “Tamara, we’re at work. If you spent as much effort studying the proposal as you do gossiping, you wouldn’t be embarrassing yourself in front of everyone.”
My words seemed to hit a sore spot. Her face twisted for a brief moment before she quickly regained her usual soft and charming demeanor. *Charlene, I’m not like you. Even if I make mistakes, no one blames me.”
I stared at her expressionlessly. She curled her lips into a smile, her eyes brimming with smugness. “And besides, you already know, don’t you? Whatever I want, Harlan always gives it to me
She paused, locking eyes with me. “Just like that proposal”
I looked at her, seeing the bright, taunting smile on her face. She was trying to provoke me.
But I didn’t get angry. I just said coolly. “If you’re not interested in listening, don’t waste my time.”
Hearing this Tamara giggled. “Charlene, if you stop teaching me, aren’t you afraid Harlan will be mad!”
I asked flatly. “Are you planning to tattle on me?”
She smiled without answering. Instead, she suddenly wood up and raised her voice. “Charlene, you must be lungry, right? I’ll go get you something

Then, in a timid voice, she said, “Charlene, you’ve helped me a lot these past few days. This is all they had nearby–I hope you don’t mind.”
Before I could say anything, a displeased voice rang out. “Charlene, how could you bully the new girl!”
