Chapter 14
Before I could act on my impulse, someone else moved faster.

Through my blurred vision, I saw a shadow kick Ethan so hard he
was sent flying.
Amber’s shrill screams pierced the air, followed by the dull, brutal
sound of fists meeting flesh.
The noise yanked me out of my spiraling rage.
I blinked, rubbing my eyes until my vision cleared.
A few feet away, Julian was pinning Ethan to the ground,
pummeling him without mercy.
Ethan wasn’t weak, but in front of Julian, he had no chance to
fight back.
I stared in stunned silence for a few moments before finally
snapping out of it.
“Jules, stop!” I rushed forward and threw my arms around the
furious man.
Julian’s heavy breathing was ragged, his gaze murderous as he
glared down at Ethan.
“Which band did you use to hit her?” Julian’s voice was

Ethan, still reeling from the sheer force Julian had unleashed,
couldn’t muster a response.
Even though Ethan had likely heard stories about Julian’s
fearsome reputation, experiencing it firsthand was another matter
entirely.
“Mr. Reid,” Ethan croaked, his lips swollen and bruised. “Breaking into my house and beating me senseless–don’t you think you’re crossing a line?”
“You think this is crossing a line?”
Julian’s entire demeanor radiated violence. His dark brow
furrowed like a harbinger of death.
“I’ll show you what crossing the line really looks like.”
He turned his head slightly, addressing the row of bodyguards standing by the door. “Break his hand.”
Ethan tried to mask his panic with bravado. “Oceanhaven is a
place of law. Don’t forget that. You have a reputation to protect, Julian. Is Clara Bennett really worth it? She’s nothing but
damaged goods.”
One of the bodyguards stepped forward, a short blade sliding out from his sleeve. As he raised it, Ethan’s composure finally
cracked.
“Clara! Stop him!”

“Jules, don’t.”

Julian looked down at me, his eyes filled with stubborn defiance.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to Ethan with icy calm.
“You saved me once, but you’ve also hurt me deeply. After today,
we’re even.”
Ethan’s expression flickered with something resembling
hesitation.
Julian signaled to the bodyguard, who handed over a set of divorce papers.
He had prepared them in advance.
“Sign it,” Julian commanded, his voice leaving no room for
argument.
The bodyguard forced a pen into Ethan’s hand and pressed him down against the table.
Staring at the papers, Ethan’s hand trembled as he gripped the
pen.
“You really want to divorce me?”
I looked at him, as though gazing at a river of time I could never turn back.
“I don’t owe you anything anymore. Let’s end this cleanly, for the

Ethan’s frustration boiled over as he tried to rise, only to be slammed back down by the bodyguard.

“Fine! Have it your way,” he spat, scrawling his name across the
page with venomous finality.
“You listen to me, Clara Bennett. I’ll never look back.”
Taking the papers, I exhaled deeply. “Good. Neither will I.”
I carefully folded the handkerchief and tucked it into my pocket before picking up the shattered pieces of the flowerpot.
Turning back one last time, I said, “Make sure to erase my fingerprints from the door. And Amber, if you don’t want this to get ugly, confess to your theft now.”
On the drive back, Julian held my hand tightly.
Seeing the stormy expression on his face, I felt a pang of guilt. “Jules, you don’t need to worry about me. I can handle myself.”
“You can handle yourself?” Julian’s voice was low as he suddenly turned, trapping me between his arms. “If I had been even
a second later, were you planning to take Ethan Ward on by yourself?”
“You have no idea how terrified I was when I saw you holding that shard of pottery.”
I stared into Julian’s deep eyes, which swirled with raw,

emotion.

They were like a storm brewing over an endless black sea.
“Lara, you belong under the spotlight, where everyone can see
your brilliance. You shouldn’t be tainted by the filth of this world.
Leave the dirty work to me.”
The car entered a tunnel, and the world outside plunged into
darkness.
Before I could respond, Julian leaned in and captured my lips in a
forceful, unyielding kiss.
