Chapter13

A Calm After The Storm

Sophie sat curled up on the worn leather couch of Emma’s cozy holiday cabin, the soft glow of the fireplace casting flickering shadows across the walls. The scent of pine and cedar filled the air, but it did little to comfort her. Instead, the warmth of the room felt suffocating, like a blanket pressed too tightly against her chest. Tears streamed down her cheeks, soaking the sleeves of her oversized sweater as she struggled to catch her breath between sobs

Emma, seated beside her, gently rubbed her back, her touch soothing and steady. Let it out, Soph, she murmured, her voice a calming balm against Sophie’s chaotic thoughts. You don’t have to hold it in anymore.”

I just don’t understand,Sophie gasped, her voice thick with emotion. How could he do this to me? I’ve always been there for himsupportive, loving, the perfect wife! What did I do to deserve this? The words tumbled out in a rush, raw and unfiltered, the pain spilling from her like an overflowing dam

Emma nodded, her expression one of unwavering empathy. You didn’t do anything wrong. This is

all on him. You deserve so much better than to be treated this way, and you know it.”

But it hurts,Sophie whispered, her voice cracking. It feels like he’s thrown everything away, and I’m left here picking up the pieces. I thought we were happy, Emma. I thought I was enough

Emma squeezed her hand, grounding her in the moment. You are enough, Soph. Don’t let his actions make you doubt that. You need to focus on what you want, not what he’s done. You’re stronger than this.”

Taking a shaky breath, Sophie tried to find some semblance of composure. I just feel so lost. I didn’t expect to be in this position. I don’t know what to do next.”

Let’s think this through,Emma suggested, her voice calm and measured. You need a plan. Have you thought about confronting him?”

Sophie’s heart raced at the thought, but fear gripped her. What if I lash out? What if I lose

control?”

Remember who you are, Sophie. The Sophie I know has this incredible selfcontrol. You can do this without losing your cool,Emma reassured her, her gaze steady. You just need to channel

that energy into something productive. Show him you’re not just going to sit back and let this

happen.”

Taking a deep breath, Sophie considered Emma’s words. What do you suggest?”

What if you show up at his office one night?Emma proposed, her eyes sparkling with a mix of

mischief and determination. Bring him dinnersomething homemade. It’ll catch him off guard, and you can check on him without him expecting anything.–

Sophie felt a flicker of hope at the idea. That could work. I could see if he’s really as busy as he claims. I could check out the situation without making it a confrontation.”

Yes! And you can slip in a casual conversation,Emma encouraged, her excitement infectious. Ask him about his day, how things have been at work. Get him talking, You’ll get a better sense of where he stands and what’s really going on

What if he tries to dismiss me?Sophie asked, biting her lip as she thought of Jason’s potential

reactions

Then you hold your ground,Emma insisted, her voice firm. Let him know you care, but also that you’re not a doormat. Show him you’re still his wife, and you deserve the truth.”

Sophie nodded slowly, the idea taking root in her mind. Okay, I can do that. I’ll just g act like everything is normal, like I’m not hurting.”

in there and

Exactly!Emma said, her enthusiasm palpable. And remember to take your time. Plan out what you want to say. Think about the questions you want to ask him. You’re not going in there unprepared.”

As they discussed the details, Sophie began to feel a sense of purpose. Emma helped her sketch out a plan, her mind buzzing with possibilities. She would prepare a simple yet delicious meal, something Jason loved. Maybe pasta with his favorite sauce and a fresh salad on the side. It was comforting, familiara reminder of the times they had shared laughter and warmth over dinner

Let’s make sure you have everything you need,Emma said, pulling out her phone. We can hit the grocery store before we head back. I’ll help you get everything prepped.”

Sophie felt a spark of determination igniting within her. You’re right. I can do this. I won’t let him- walk all over me anymore. It’s time he knows how I really feel.”

Emma smiled, pride lighting up her face. That’s the spirit! Just remember, you deserve answers, and you have every right to demand them. You’re not in this alone; I’ll be right here, cheering you

on.”

Sophie felt a weight lift from her shoulders, replaced by a newfound clarity. The plan was taking shape, and for the first time in days, she felt a flicker of hope amidst the chaos. She wouldn’t let Jason’s betrayal define her; she would confront the truth, no matter how painful it might be

As they stood up to head out, Sophie glanced around the cabin, taking in the serene beauty of the moment. She felt grateful for Emma’s support, knowing that no matter what happened next, she would face it headon with strength and resilience
