At six o’clock in the evening. Jared landed at Toronto Airport with Karin 

But he hadn’t expected this- 

Ever since leaving home, he had been unable to contact Carrie, and the thought of her never left his mind. He wanted to know how she was recovering, if she had eaten the nutritious meals prescribed by the doctor, whether she had gone outside for a walk… 

But no matter how many messages he sent or how many calls he made, it was as if they had disappeared into the void 

Then his mother called t 

She had actually compromised, agreeing to his engagement with Karin. 

Jared knew his mother had never liked Karin. They had argued over this for years, their relationship strained because of it. 

But this time, she was the one who gave in, Not only did she agree to let Karin into the family, but she also insisted on moving up the engagement date. 

He couldn’t help but ask, “What about Came? She’s still my public fiancée.” 

His mother’s response was calm. “TI talk to her. You can hold the engagement banquet when you return.” 

Hearing this, Karin was overjoyed, bursting into tears of happiness. 

But Jared felt empty. 

Wasn’t this the outcome he had always dreamed of? Then why, now that he could finally be with Kanin without obstacles, did he feel nothing but a growing void inside him? 

Came’s smiling face suddenly surfaced in his mind, and before he realized it, he found himself smiling at nothing. 

He forced himself to refocus. “Then tell her to prepare and attend our engagement ceremony.” 

After all, she had been by his side for two years. He didn’t want their story to end with nothing between them.? 

Silence stretched on the other end of the line before his mother finally spoke. 

“Carrie won’t be attending your engagement with Kanin. Since you don’t love her, let her go. Z 

Jared stiffened 

“What do you mean? If she’s not attending, then where is she going?” 

His mother sighed quietly on the other end, shaking her head 

recover and clear her mind. 

She had promised Carrie she would keep her departure a secret, telling Jared only that she had left to reco Deep down, she felt a pang of sadness for her son.2 

Carrie had never truly loved Jared–her feelings had always been mechanical, as if she were simply fulfilling an obligation. But Jared he had become so blind to his own emotions that he was straying further and further from what truly mattered.? His mother continued, “Aren’t you worried she might show up at the engagement party and cause a scene? If she chooses not to come, isn’t that exactly what you want? She said she needed space, wanted to find a quiet place to relax. Since you don’t care about her, it doesn’t matter whether she’s there or not, right?” 

Didn’t matter?2 

Could he really just let it go? 

“Mom, where exactly did she go? New York? Michigan? Ohio? Did she take someone trustworthy with her? She just recovered from a high fever–what if she faints on the way?” 

He hadn’t realized how fast the words were spilling from his mouth, how deep his concem for Carrie ran.X 

Then it hit him 

His worry about her safety was overwhelming, almost instinctive. 

His mother’s voice was composed. “You can ask her yourself when you return. 

And with that, she ended the cell. 

Karin, noticing his distraction, pouted and nestled into his arms, acting spoiled. 

“Brother Jared, why are you so absent–minded? Aren’t you happy to be here with me?“\/
