Ethan’s voice was laced with skepticism. “We had plans today. Can I come over to your place?“}
“It’s too late for that,” I said, brushing him off.”
There was a pause before he spoke again. “I’m sorry, Emma. Lily’s been crying nonstop, so I have to stay with her.”
“But you didn’t actually do anything.
“Please, just trust me.”}
His voice was now tinged with a pleading note.
“Don’t bother apologizing. I believe you.
“You’ve known Lily forever. If she’s sick, she needs care,” I replied, echoing his old excuses.
He used to throw those lines at me with a smirk, clearly enjoying my jealousy.}
Now, he was the one on the defensive, and it struck me as almost comical.
Another silence stretched out before Ethan spoke again, taking a deep breath. “How about breakfast tomorrow morning?“} “I’ve got things to do,” I said, hanging up.
I immediately checked my exam results online and grinned when I saw that I had passed.}
It used to be that Ethan would laugh at my anger, enjoying the drama.
Now, he was the one in a panic.}
The whole situation was laughable.
Two days later, as I was getting ready to head back home, I tripped at the entrance of the neighborhood.
Luckily, a passing man grabbed me just in time.}
“Thanks…”
I started to say, but before I could finish, Ethan appeared out of nowhere, shoving the man aside and snarling, “Who the hell are you? Why are you so close to Emma?“}
Ethan’s eyes were blazing, and he looked ready to lose it.
“Are you out of your mind?}
“She almost fell. I just helped her.” the man shot back, clearly annoyed.§
“Hmph, you’re just trying to get close to Emma!“}
Ethan wasn’t listening to reason, his fists clenched as if ready to throw down.
“Knock it off!” I snapped, quickly apologizing to the man and telling him to go.}
Then I turned to Ethan and said, “We’re not together anymore. Why do you keep harassing me?}
“My life was destroyed because of you!!
“Don’t come here and mess up my life. Even if that guy was my new boyfriend, what does it matter to you? “You used to act like it didn’t bother you.“}
I felt tears welling up, even though I thought I had moved past these feelings.
They came rushing back, catching me off guard.>>
