Chapter 7
I recognized that car. It was Dexter’s. The woman in the passenger seat, her back to me. Wocked the mats for they kissed. They were so caught up in each other that they didn’t even seem to resize they were at a bonyed.
I froze for a moment, then quickly snapped back to reality and rushed after them. The car had ju fiched the words payment, the windows rolled up, and it pulled out onto the road.
I tried to chase after it, weaving through the flower bed, but there was no way I could catch up to a car in a matter of seconds, it disappeared from sight.
Anger and despair surged through me, and I gasped for air as tears streamed down my face spin. I dated Demer’s reverber frantically, but it went straight to voicemail.
He had just been with me a minute ago, saying he had to leave for some work at the office. He promised held pick up Josses His voice, whispering in my ear, still lingered in my mind.
I thought, ‘How could I have known that just ten minutes later, I would witness such a cruel scene? He has brought that woman to the hospital?
In front of me, he’d played the part of the perfect husband, but when he was with her, he was the perfect lover–stable to even wait until evening before things heated up.
My phone rang–it was Clara. “Sylvia, did you get the medicine?”
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Almost there.”
I hung up, glancing at the time. No wonder Clara had been pushing me–I’d already been gone nearly forty minutes. In the face of such a shock, I hadn’t even realized how much time had passed.
I hurried back to Martha’s room with the medicine, got her to eat, and then took her for a short walk in the garden downstairs, followed by dinner. One thing after another, and by the time I stopped to catch my breath, it was already dusk outside.
My dinner was simple–a hospital–boxed meal with two vegetables and two types of meat. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to get me through.
Dexter was supposed to pick up Juno and cook dinner for him, so I didn’t ask him to bring me food.
Clara sat across from me, picking at her food in small bites. She wasn’t really eating–her mind was elsewhere. But then again, neither was I.
Thinking about the conversation I’d overheard earlier, I decided to just ask straight out. “Clara, you know I’m your real sister, right?”
She looked up at me, puzzled. “Of course, Sylvia,” she replied, then seemed to realize something and quickly added, “I shouldn’t have kept Mom’s condition from you. Please don’t be mad at me. Don’t blame me, okay?” Her eyes were already welling up with tears.
I shook my head. “I’m not mad, but there’s something I need to ask, and you have to be honest with me.”
My tone was serious, and she seemed to sense it. She slowly set her fork down.
“Dexter… who is the woman he’s seeing?” I didn’t beat around the bush anymore. It was better to get to the point.

Chapter 7
Clara’s eyes went wide in shock. She opened her mouth as if she’d been struck, “Sylvia…”
“If you still see me as your sister, then you’d better tell me the truth. I can let the past go, but don’t treat me like a fool,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. But my hand was clenched so tightly, my fingernails had left deep impressions in my palm.
Clara hesitated for a few seconds. “You already know?”
“Yeah.”
“Sylvia, I didn’t mean to hide this from you,” Clara said, her voice trembling. “I found out by accident… that day, I saw Dexter come out of a hotel with another woman.
“It just so happened that our school had a field trip, and I was staying at that same hotel, so I ran into them.”
Clara spoke in broken phrases. “I didn’t see what the woman looked like, but she was wearing a fuchsia dress and seemed to have a great figure. Dexter… he couldn’t take his eyes off her.”
My head was spinning, and my breath felt searing hot, like a fire burning inside me. “And then what happened? When was this?”
“It was during my junior year.”
Clara graduated this year, so that meant Dexter’s affair started over a year ago. I thought, ‘More than a year… that means Dexter has been cheating for over a year.
‘No. Wait. If that photo was real, Dexter might have been lying to me from the start. How could he have only been cheating for just over a year when the kid is already that old?‘
It was laughable. I had been completely in the dark, thinking our life together was perfect, when in reality, I had been living a lie. What a brutal slap to the face.
“I couldn’t hold it in anymore, so I confronted him. He panicked and promised he’d end things with that woman, begging me not to tell you. He said if you found out, you’d definitely divorce him. With Juno being so young, I couldn’t just watch your family fall apart.”
Clara was crying, her face streaked with tears. “Sylvia, I swear I didn’t mean to keep this from you.”
I nodded, my voice tight. “I understand.”
“Sylvia…”
“Don’t tell Dexter anything about what I just said,” I told her, turning to leave. But then I quickly turned back, grabbing her wrist firmly. “Remember, we’re sisters.
“If Dexter really has someone else, you need to be on my side. Do you understand?” My voice was hoarse, and I locked eyes with her, holding her gaze.
Clara nodded slowly, though she seemed uncertain.
I wasn’t hungry anymore. I cleared away the meal tray and sat there, lost in thought.
Clara wasn’t a child anymore. I had laid everything out for her, and she knew what to do. Now, aside from Martha’s condition, the one thing I had to figure out was: Who is the woman Dexter is seeing?
I thought, “That’s right–the hotel! Wouldn’t there still be a record of his stay at the hotel where Clara accidentally saw them?‘

Chapter 7
1 quickly asked Clara for the name and address of the hotel, then grabbed my phone to search for tents, suku was still around, and it was a national chain of star–rated hotels
I didn’t have a membership with them, but I knew someone who did Holly, 1 really didn’t want to adk her for help, bove had no choice. After a moment’s hesitation, I dialed her number
When I explained what I needed, Holly agreed right away. Then she teased me, “You know, there’s no such thing mic doesn’t steal fish. Looks like you’re finally realizing that, huh?”
I understood exactly what she meant. Holly was saying I had trusted Dexter too much, even grey, so far as to take in the office as if he were the perfect man, a role model for the new century,
Back then, Holly had scoffed at me, and we had parted ways on bad terms. But as I looked at things now, the wastage. She saw through him long before I did.
Once she sent me the membership number, I got to work immediately. As Dexter’s legal woone, it was much cater for me to access his hotel records. With the membership number and our marriage license, I quickly chained the record from over
a year ago.
The hotel sent the information by email. My heart was pounding as I opened my inbox.
The signal in the room was poor, so I stepped into a corner outside the ward, refreshing the page over and over. My palms were sweating. Finally, the email popped up in my inbox. I shakily clicked on the latest one.
As the page slowly loaded, and I was about to see the name, a voice came from behind me. “Sylvia, what are you doing here?
I thought, ‘Oh no! It is Dexter!‘
