Chapter 8
Herbert’s tears, borne of unbearable pain, welled up and streamed down his face uncontrollably.
He frantically rummaged through the debris of the things I had smashed. Even though his hands were sliced and bleeding from the broken glass, he didn’t cease his search.
He was desperate to see if I had left behind anything for him.
In the end, Herbert’s vision darkened. After spitting out a mouthful of blood, he collapsed
and lost consciousness.
When Herbert regained consciousness, he was in the hospital.
It was my assistant, Tiffany, who had found him.
Tiffany’s eyes were red and puffy, and her gaze towards Herbert was filled with seething
hatred.
She said, “I came to look for Ms. Brown and then saw you lying on the floor, your face covered in blood. If I wasn’t worried about you dying, I wouldn’t have bothered saving you at
all.
“You make me sick. You have no idea how much Ms. Brown loved you. You’re a scumbag
and don’t deserve her love in the slightest.”
Tears welled up in Tiffany’s eyes and streamed down.
Herbert sat up from the hospital bed and begged Tiffany, “Do you know where Samantha is? Please tell me. Where is Samantha? I can’t live without her.”
Tiffany took a step back, her words like those of a heartless executioner delivering a death sentence to Herbert.
She said, “A few days ago, Ms. Brown returned to the country early to surprise you. But instead of going home, she tracked your location to a bar.

It was as if something exploded in Herbert’s mind.
He thought, “So Samantha has known all along. These past few days, Samantha has been watching my acts. She has calmly watched me tell lies, gradually becoming disappointed and desperate and finally leaving resolutely.”
Just thinking about this made Herbert feel like his heart had been ripped open.
He could no longer hold back his sobs. He punched the floor with his fists, one after
another, not caring that his wounds were reopening.
In the empty hospital ward, the cold wind howled.
Herbert recalled the wedding night when I had leaned close to his ear and shared the story of my parents‘ love.
1 said, “Herbert, although I once resented my father for leaving me to be with my mother, I
truly envy their love. It wasn’t eighteen days or eighteen months. It was a full eighteen
years.
“My father was a billionaire. He could have had any woman he desired. But he only ever stayed with my mother and me, spending his days and nights with thoughts of my mother.
“Herbert, that’s the kind of unwavering love I yearn for. If one day you no longer love me,
please choose a sunny afternoon and have a meal with me calmly. I’ll leave with dignity and
wish you happiness.
“But if you betray and deceive me, I’ll ensure you can never find me for the rest of your
life. No matter where in the world, I want you to regret and suffer for the rest of your days.”
At that time, Herbert had knelt and sworn to the heavens. “I, Herbert, will love only Samantha for my entire life. I will never betray or deceive her. If I do anything to wrong Samantha, may I die a horrible death and not even be worthy of seeing Samantha in the
next life.”
Herbert had believed he would keep that promise forever.
After all, he had indeed loved me more than his own life.
If only one of us could survive one day he would have chosen me without hesitation

But how could he have succumbed to temptation? How could he have broken my heart?
Herbert stood on the top floor of the hospital, and the howling wind lashed at his face
like stinging slaps.
He contemplated suicide.
Every minute and every second of his life without me felt like torture.
When Herbert lifted his leg and was about to jump, he suddenly thought of the fact that I
hadn’t filed for divorce from him.
He thought I was waiting for him to find me.
Herbert was like a man who had found a reason to live, and a glimmer of ecstasy
appeared on his face.
He muttered, “Yes. When I find Samantha and sincerely apologize, she will forgive me.
Samantha, my dearest, I’m coming to you.”
