Chapter 38
A Wolf Among Us
The plan was in motion.
By noon, the fake acquisition report had been discreetly placed in the system, visible only to a select few. Jordan had ensured that any unauthorized access would immediately trigger a silent alert.
Now, all they had to do was wait.
Elena sat at the head of the boardroom table, fingers tapping lightly against the polished surface. She wasn’t one for patience, but this moment required it. The enemy would reveal themselves soon enough.
Naomi checked her phone. “How long do you think it’ll take?”
Jordan leaned back, arms crossed. “If they’re desperate? Not long.”
Elena’s gaze flickered toward the massive screen at the end of the room, where a live feed tracked access attempts in real time. So far, nothing.
Then, at exactly 2:17 PM, a red notification blinked onto the screen.
Unauthorized file access detected.
The room went silent.
Jordan’s fingers flew across his keyboard. “Tracing the connection now.”
Elena’s heartbeat quickened. This was it.
Naomi stood, moving closer to the screen. “Who took the bait?”
Jordan frowned, his eyes narrowing at the data. “Hold on… That’s not right.”
Elena’s stomach tightened. “What do you mean?”
He exhaled sharply, looking up. “The access attempt came from inside the building.”
A chill ran down Elena’s spine.
They had expected an external breach, maybe even a remote login. But this meant the mole was still here. Right now.
Naomi’s expression darkened. “Can you pinpoint the device?”
Jordan worked quickly, pulling up security logs. The silence in the room was suffocating.
Then, he found it.
Jordan looked up, eyes sharp.
“It came from Philip West’s office.”
The name sent a ripple of shock through the room.
Philip West—head of mergers and acquisitions. One of the most trusted executives in the company.
Elena’s jaw clenched. She should’ve seen it.
Naomi swore under her breath. “That lying—”
Elena didn’t wait. She was already on her feet, marching toward the door.
Naomi caught up quickly. “Elena, wait. If Philip is the leak, he’s dangerous.”
Elena didn’t slow down. “Then it’s time we made him realize—so am I.”
