Barry broke the silence. “Mr. Warren, this case has been investigated several times already. The police concluded it years ago. It’s highly unlikely there’s been a mistake.”

Barry continued, “Before Harold lost his leg, he worked at a chemical plant in Nopolis West Industrial Park.
“From what we’ve uncovered, Harold never went to Nopolis East Industrial Park. That means Ms. Thompson couldn’t have been there either.
“On top of that Harold’s leg amputation surgery happened over a month after your accident. No matter how we cross–check the timelines, the idea that Ms. Thompson was the one who saved you doesn’t add up.”

Frustration evident in his demeanor, Alex sank deeper into the couch, letting the weight of his body sende heavily against it.
He couldn’t shake his doubts. The moment he first saw the necklace around Haley’s neck, suspicion had crept into his mind.
When he probed her about it, Haley had claimed in was a piece from her collection, something she had kept for many years. She explained away her hazy memory of events as a result of an illness that had blurred her recollections
Alex had delved into records of the Owens family businesses and confirmed that they owned a pharmaceutical factory in Nopolis
He also knew that during the summer when his incident occurred, Haley had spent some time in Nopolis with her parents. For a while, he had believed without question that Haley had been the one to save him.
But now, his instincts were screaming otherwise.
Late at night, at the Warren Manor, Alex trudged upstairs, his steps heavy with fatigue. A glance at the clock on the wall revealed it was nearly midnight.
He quietly opened the door to Ellie’s room. The space was pitch black, save for a faint sliver of moonlight sneaking in through the gap in the curtains.
Not turning on the lights, Alex approached the bed, stopping just a step away
Ellie was lying on her side, facing him. Most of her face was buried in the blanket, leaving only a small part of her head visible, which also concealed the injuries on her face.
Carefully, Alex lowered himself onto the edge of the bed. His fingers gently tagged the blanket down, just enough to reveal Ellie’s face. In the dim light filtering through the curtains, he examined her bruises.
His rough fingertips brushed softly against her check. The motion was delicate and tender, a sharp contrast to his usual demeanor.
Tonight, he didn’t pull her up to interrogate her about what had happened earlier. He didn’t demand answers or explanations. Instead, he simply sat there, quietly, his gaze fixed on her.

As the sound of the door closing chord softly, Ellie slowly opened her eyes.
She didn’t move, remaining as still as before, her gaze fixed on the door. Yet, inside her, a storm was raging.

After a week apart, Alex noted that Ellie’s indifference toward him remained unchanged. His expression darkened unconsciously.
Blocking the doorway to the living room, Alex didn’t budge. Ellie, suitcase in hand, was forced to speak first. “Move, please. I’m in a hurry”
His gaze lingered on the suitcase before he asked. “You just got back. Where are you going now?”
