It was close to midnight, and the Harwood Highway was shrouded in dense fog with visibility dropping below 160 feet.
The traffic authorities were urgently clearing the road, and Ellie’s car was forced off the highway into Harwood.
She had planned to find a nearby hotel to stay until dawn, but after checking three hotels, all were fully booked, and she couldn’t even borrow a power bank.
Seeing many other drivers who had been forced off the highway and were resting in their cars by the roadside, Ellie decided to drive a bit further and see if she could find a place to stay.
She had driven here in the nanny van that Evan usually sat in, which had a universal wireless charging device.
However, her phone, a custom model that Alex had gotten for her, had a unique USB port and wireless charger that only worked with her specific device.
If she didn’t find a way to charge her phone soon, it would die
Just then, someone from the church called again, urging Ellie to hurry because Quinlee hadn’t woken up since the evening.
With no other choice, Ellie gave up on finding a hotel.
She turned on her navigation, took a detour via a side road, and drove slowly toward Sheahow Church.
A few hours later, around three or four in the morning when the fog was at its thickest, Ellie reached a section of the road that ran along a reservoir dam.
The narrow dam road had a farm tricycle parked on the side, blocking her way.
Ellie hesitated, then stopped her car and got out to check.
At that moment, standing on the reservoir dam road surrounded by dense fog with extremely low visibility, she could barely see that to her left was a large reservoir, and the slope to her righ was very steep.
Beyond that, she couldn’t see anything. She guessed that there might be farmland or a village down the slope on the right.
Looking at the tricycle parked by the roadside, Ellie tried to push it to the side a few times but couldn’t budge it.
After circling the tricycle, she discovered that its wheels were locked.
Just as she was at a loss, she suddenly heard a series of chaotic footsteps coming from both directions.
Her heart raced with alarm, and she quickly got back into her car and locked the doors.
The next second, the car was violently shaken, accompanied by bud banging noises. Frightened, Elic hurriedly took out her phone to call the police.
Before she could dial the emergency number, her phone died.
Looking through the car window at the men outside, Ellie frantically searched the car for something to defend herself.
But all she had was her dead phone.
As Ellie was panicking and feeling desperate, the commotion outside suddenly stopped..
Then, a man climbed onto the front hood of her car.

robbers.
The man skillfully used a safety hammer to shatter the front windshield of her car. Soon after, the front and rear windows were also broken.
“Who are you?” Ellie shouted as the car doors were yanked open and she was forcibly dragged out by two men.
Desperately, she struggled and screamed for help.
At that moment, the man in front of Ellie was kicked away.
Then, Ellie was pulled into someone’s arms.
The familiar scent of cold wood mixed with a hint of tobacco enveloped her, and Ellie threw herself into the man’s embrac
Get in my car, Alex said, shielding Ellie as he turned around.
Realizing what was happening, Ellie quickly got into Alex’s car.
Alex’s car was parked on the side of the dam road, with a steep embankment on the other side that no one could cross.
With Alex guarding the other side of the car, Ellie was temporarily safe inside,
Through the car window, Ellie watched as Alex was surrounded by a group of men in a fierce fight. The attackers clearly noticed Alex’s injured left leg and deliberately targeted it.
But Alex didn’t care, fiercely guarding the car door behind him to prevent anyone from getting close.
Ellie quickly searched through Alex’s car.
Top–tier heirs like Alex always had self–defense weapons in their vehicles.
After searching for a while without finding any weapon, Ellie lay down on the car door to keep an eye on Alex outside.
The scene before her eyes overlapped with so many from the past, and Ellie couldn’t stop crying.
Every time Alex protected her, it was like this, reckless and fierce as if he didn’t care about his own life.
The car window shattered, and Alex opened the door, turning hit back to the attackers and shielding Ellie with his body as he said, “Get out of the car.”
Seeing the alarming blood on Alex’s face and the way he was gritting his teeth to hold on, Ellie knew he was about to collapse. She got out of the car without hesitation.
Her gaze fell on Alex’s hand, which was dripping blood, and she noticed his arm trembling–slightly.
Close your eyes
eyes and be still, Alex whispered, ignoring the danger behind him. “Don’t worry. I’m here. No one can hurt you”
Before she could respond, Alex pulled her tightly into his arms d rolled down the slope with her.
Alex held Ellie tightly the entire time. When they finally came to stop, Alex looked around and realized they had landed in a reed marsh.
The water wasn’t deep, but it was enough to soak them both.

“Don’t move.” Alex instructed, feeling around with one hand unt he found a broken tree stump sticking out of the water.
Ignoring his own pain, Alex shifted, holding Ellie on his back as he maneuvered them closer to the stump.
He positioned himself so that his back was supported by the stump and his legs were braced against the broken tree trunk i the water.
He suspended his waist in the air, using his shoulders and legs to keep Ellie’s body out of the water.
Hearing movement nearby, Alex threw his phone as hard as he could.
Soon, the footsteps faded away. After a while, the sound of an engine started up on the dam.
“Don’t be afraid. We’re safe for now,” Alex said, pulling Ellie closer and gently patting her back to comfort her.
The reed marsh was dark and eerie. Ellie lay on top of Alex, distinctly feeling his body trembling beneath hers. The water “isn’t too deep. Try to put it down, Ellie suggested.
“Stay still. The water is dirty, Alex said, tightening his arm around her waist. They might come back. We’ll wait here until Barry comes to get us.
Ellie lay still in Alex’s arms, her eyes closed.
It was strange; usually, she wanted to avoid him at all costs.
But whenever danger struck and he was there, she felt safe, no matter how perilous the situation was
“I wish time could just stop at this moment,” Alex murmured.
“Why?” Ellie asked cautiously.
“Because at this moment, you won’t push me away,” Alex replied;
“I don’t want time to stop,” Ellie closed her eyes and said, tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Why not?” Alex asked.
“Because you’re hurt, and it must hurt a lot,” Ellie whispered.

Ellie didn’t speak, but her tears flowed uncontrollably.
Hearing her quiet sobs, Alex’s voice broke as he continued, “Ellie you have no idea how much I want to go back to the way things were, how much I want to be with you again.”
