Alex refused to leave Ellie’s room. Even when Chris came over to deliver urgent documents for him to sign, he had to bring them straight to Ellie’s room.
By noon, it had started to rain outside.
After Chris left, Alex lay sprawled on Ellie’s bed, wrapped in her thin little blanket, spending the entire afternoon playing Ludo with her.
When Aaron video–called Ellie, Alex saw her pick up her phone and head toward the balcony. He immediately got up and pulled her back. “Take the call here. I’ll step out for a bit.”
Ellie answered Aaron’s call, while Alex went downstairs and stopped outside Carlos’s room. Blocking the family doctor’s way, he asked, “How much longer does my grandfather have?”
The doctor respectfully replied, “Mr. Warren, if it weren’t for Mr. Griffith’s second surgery and the medication, Mr. Carlos Warren wouldn’t have lasted this long. Yesterday, a group of specialists came for a consultation. They estimate he has three to four months left at most.”
Ten minutes later, Alex went to the study on the second floor. Sitting at his desk, he checked the calendar.
Last night, he had personally overheard Ellie promise Aaron that after Carlos passed away, she would move back to the Thompson residence–no matter what stage her relationship with Alex reached. ·
If he let her go, he would never get another chance like this. With only three months left, he had no idea what he needed to do to make Ellie stay with him forever.
As his phone screen dimmed, Alex braced his elbows on the edge of the desk, running both hands through his short hair with force. He felt a suffocating pressure weigh down on him, lowering his head into a long, heavy silence.
Half a month later, Alex’s leg had fully recovered, and he wasted no time returning to work. He ordered, “Compress the workload for the next few months into the next three days.”
As soon as the morning meeting ended, Alex went into full–on work mode.
Chris hesitated. “Mr. Warren, there are already many delayed projects awaiting your approval from the time you were injured. If we push everything forward, it’ll be impossible to finish in three days.”
“Give me the urgent cases. For major projects, go through the final proposals with the department heads first. Distribute all remaining tasks among the deputy directors and set strict deadlines. Anyone has a problem with it can get the hell out,” Alex
said.
Without another word, Chris rushed off to carry out his orders.
In the evening, after taking a walk in the garden while pushing Carlos in his wheelchair, Ellie returned to her room, Alex hadn’t come back yet..
Seeing Alex’s message saying he would be working late, Ellie reped. Then she stood on the bedroom balcony, gazing at the northwest corner of the garden below.
She remembered the first few years after she came to the Warren Manor, how she missed home every day, missing her parents and Aaron.

Eventually, she even secretly dug a hole by the wall. She naively believed that if she crawled through that small hole, she could meet her family.
One night, she finally got the chance to crawl out through the hole. She ran desperately, following the direction Alex had once pointed out to her as the way home. Halfway there, she was nearly scared to death by a big yellow dog.
Many details she couldn’t remember, but she never forgot how Alex had come up behind her, cursing as he hugged her tightly. He held her so tightly that she could hardly breathe.
He warned her fiercely, “If you run again, I’ll break your legs and lock you up.”
She remembered that after he said that, he grabbed her dirty hands, disgusted, and wiped them with his own white shirt. Afterward, she was carried on his back, brought back to the Warren Manor.
Everyone said he was bad, that he was crazy, and even Alex himself admitted he wasn’t a good person. But in Ellie’s eyes, no matter how mean he was, he was the best.
Shaking off her thoughts, Ellie went downstairs to prepare a late–night snack for Alex.
Around eleven o’clock, Alex returned. He got out of the car and, noticing the lights were still on in the living room, furrowed his brow slightly.
The night they had been caught by Nancy and two of the servants while being affectionate at the door, the next morning, he had ordered Evan to remove the night–shift servants from the main hall.
As soon as he entered the living room, Alex caught the strong scent of chowder in the air.
In the kitchen, Ellie was dressed in casual home clothes, her long hair held up with a shark clip. She was so focused as she ladled the chowder, her concentration evident in every movement.
Alex’s throatrightened, and the emotions stirring in his eyes grew more obvious. Taking out his phone, Alex snapped a picture of this precious moment.
He dreamed of having a home with Ellie. No matter how late he came home, she would be there waiting for him.
She had once been right in front of him, within his reach, but he was the one who had pushed her away. Now, she was his unreachable dream, his hopeless desire.
But he didn’t accept that fate. Even if he had to go against the world, as long as there was a glimmer of hope, he would give everything to keep her by his side forever.
“Didn’t I tell you not to prepare this?” Alex stood behind Ellie and gently wrapped her in his arms.
“I couldn’t sleep, so I came down to make you some late–night snacks,” Ellie said, shrinking her neck to avoid Alex’s warm breath.
Alex took the spoon from Ellie’s hand, turning her to face him. He lowered his head to look at her face and said, “Get ready; we’re going abroad.”
Ellie looked up, their eyes meeting. She hesitated slightly. “But if we go abroad, what about Grandpa Carlos?”
Alex replied, “The experts said Grandpa’s condition is stable for now. We’ll go and come back quickly. It won’t take too much
time.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Ellie said, “Then I’ll go back tomorrow and tell my family.”

When Alex heard Ellie was going back to the Thompson residence to tell her family about the trip, his gaze flickered with uncertainty.
He bent down slightly to meet Ellie’s eyes, speaking in a low voice, “Don’t tell Mrs. Thompson and the others for now, or they’ll worry about you. If we really can cure your amnesia, wouldn’t it be better to surprise them when we come back?”
“Okay, I’ll listen to you,” Ellie agreed.
Hearing Ellie’s response, Alex pulled her back into his arms.
Alex instinctively tightened his arms around Ellie. He closed his eyes, hiding the emotions in his gaze, and said, “We leave the day after tomorrow. I’ll arrange work these next two days. You stay with Grandpa for now, and use the time to pack.”

“Okay,” Ellie nodded obediently in his embrace. If this trip could cure her amnesia, her life could return to normal, and her mom and Aaron wouldn’t have to worry about her so much.
Though Ellie had given her affirmative response, Alex still reminded her repeatedly with concern. “Remember, don’t tell anyone we’re going abroad.”

The next morning, Todd and Nancy went to the CEO’s office at the Warren Group. Alex was working, and when he saw his parents enter with dark expressions, he quickly shot Chris a warning look.
“Mr. Warren, Mrs. Warren, please,” Chris offered, pouring coffee for Alex’s parents. He turned to leave, but Todd called him back.
Todd stood in front of the desk, shaking with anger as he pointed at Alex. “From the moment you took over the company, your grandfather told you not to act on impulse in anything you do.”
“After limping around at home for days, now you don’t want to work. After returning, you dumped all your work onto your subordinates and slashed the year–end bonuses for everyone,” Todd continued. “Yesterday, several board members called me all night, demanding an explanation from you.”
“Your actions have thrown the family into chaos, and now you’ve made the company a mess. What exactly are you trying to do?” Todd angrily demanded.
Alex didn’t take his father’s accusations seriously.
He set down his pen, stood up, and picked up a stack of documents. “Dad, I’m the executive president of Warren Group. Though I’m constrained by the board, I have direct operational and management authority over the company.”
Todd retorted, “Major company reforms must be voted on by the board. What you’re doing is undermining your own authority. Who will respect you from top to bottom?”
Alex replied, “The year–end bonuses are still there, but they have to be tied to performance.
“Deputy directors in each department must take on some of my workload, and the bonuses for senior executives must also be tied to the department’s overall performance. If anyone disagrees, I’ll replace them. This isn’t up for discussion.”
The two argued furiously. Chris stood nearby with a serious expression, not daring to make a sound.
“Enough, stop pretending,” Nancy finally snapped. “I heard you say you were taking Ellie abroad last night.”
Alex fixed his mother with a direct stare. “Mom, can you stop eavesdropping? It’s such a bad habit.” Nancy glared back. “Who are you to say that to me?”

Alex paused. Reluctantly, he lowered his stance. “Mom, I have everything arranged for this. Please don’t go around spreading
rumors.”
Naney retorted, “Alex, have you forgotten? Jason Thompson duga 60–foot–deep pit, intending to bury you alive.”
Alex replied, “Mom, as long as you don’t tell others about this, he won’t bury me.”
Todd firmly objected. “The doctor Jason found for Ellie is a top military expert. You have no say in this. I won’t allow you to take Ellie abroad.”
Nancy added, “Your father is right. We’ll go along with most things, but not this. You’re not to go ahead with it.”
Alex pinched his brow in exhaustion, then spoke in a very firm tone, “Dad, Mom, I’m going to marry Ellie. If you’re not going to help me, then at least don’t stop me.”
He added, “If you want me to stop thinking about her, you’ll have to kill me first.”
“You-” Todd was too furious to speak.
“You scoundrel!” Nancy shouted, equally enraged.
Todd and Nancy stormed out, seething with anger. Chris quickly followed them, escorting them to the elevator.
Back in the office, Chris saw Alex pacing by the floor–to–ceiling windows, smoking in frustration. He didn’t dare speak, silently retreating toward the door.

Around noon, Layton arrived at Alex’s office.
Looking at Layton’s flamboyant outfit, Alex shot him a disdainful glance. “It’s not even dark yet. How can you bear to go out?”
“I was sleeping soundly when your mom called me. Her wailing made me think you were dead,” Layton said, lifting his butt and sitting on the edge of Alex’s desk.
He propped himself up on the desk with one hand and asked Alex, “She said you were planning to take Ellie abroad, and she’s worried that Jason Thompson might bury you alive, so she sent me here to talk some sense into you.”
Alex gritted his teeth and slammed his fist down on the keyboard, frustrated. He knew Nancy couldn’t keep a secret.
Layton continued, “I know you won’t listen to me, but I just wanted to remind you that the Thompson family probably already knows you’re taking Ellie abroad.”
“Impossible.” Alex’s face immediately darkened. Even if Todd and Nancy opposed him, they wouldn’t tell anyone from the Thompson family about it and let Jason bury him.
Layton said, “Sorry, when I answered your mom’s call, Lacey was right there. If Lacey knows, her friend Diana will definitely know. And if Diana knows, then Aaron will know, too.”
At the same time, Diana received a call from Lacey at the Grant Manor. She jumped up from the sofa. “What? You’re telling me that Alex, that bastard, is trying to take Ellie abroad while shes still amnesiac?”
“Wait for me. I’m changing now, and I’ll come find Ellie with you Diana said, holding her phone and running upstairs to change, not even bothering to put on slippers.

At the door, Quinlee clenched her phone tightly before turning to leave. Once back in her room, Quinlee immediately called Yvette to arrange a meeting at noon.
No matter what, she couldn’t let Alex take Ellie abroad, and she couldn’t let the two of them get married smoothly. She couldn’t let Ellie marry into the Warren family.
Quinlee swore to herself that as long as she was still around, no one who had ever hurt her, abandoned her, or insulted her would ever find happiness. She would make them all pay the price.
At noon, Diana and Lacey arrived at Ellie’s room in the Warren Manor. Seeing their clearly hesitant expressions, Ellie couldn’t help but ask, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Diana elbowed Lacey. Lacey, with some difficulty, said, “Ellie, are you really going abroad with that madman Alex?”
Ellie was taken aback and opened her mouth in surprise. “How do you know?”
Diana was so anxious that her voice was cracking. “Don’t worry about that. Now everyone knows. Ellie, your memory hasn’t recovered, and you can’t remember anything. Aren’t you afraid that crazy guy might do something to you?”
Ellie gave a small, awkward smile. “Alex won’t do that. He contacted doctors overseas to treat my memory loss. We’ll be back in a few days.”
Lacey whispered carefully, “What if he’s lying to you?”
Ellie smiled and reassured them, “You don’t need to worry about me. Alex isn’t as bad as you think; he’s been really good to me.”
Seeing that Ellie completely trusted Alex, Lacey and Diana didn’t know what to say. They didn’t dare say much more.
They were relieved, at least, that Alex was taking Ellie abroad for her memory treatment, not for something like a wedding.
“We’re leaving now.” Just past three in the afternoon, Alex hurriedly returned, grabbed Ellie, and started pulling her out.
Ellie looked at Alex in confusion. “Didn’t you say we’re leaving tomorrow? Why are we leaving now?”
“I finished the work I had. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can come back,” Alex replied evasively. His eyes flickered as he turned his head away from Ellie’s questioning gaze.
Ellie nodded. “Okay, but wait for me. I’ll go upstairs to grab my things and tell Grandpa Carlos.”
Alex’s phone in his pocket vibrated continuously. He pulled it out, saw that it was Aaron calling, and calmly hung up.
