Half an hour later, Alex received a call from his parents and took away Ellie’s half–packed suitcase.

He held Ellie tightly in his arms and whispered softly to comfort her, “My parents are at the Thompson residence right now. They said Mrs. Thompson tripped while avoiding a child at the supermarket and hurt her back.
“She has already been discharged from the hospital and is now resting in bed at home.”
Hearing that her mother had been discharged and was resting at home, Ellie felt a little relieved.
Alex said, “After your third treatment finishes tomorrow morning, I will take you back to our country immediately.”

“Promise me that no matter what anyone says after we go back, you won’t leave me!” Alex said in a muffled voice.
Ellie could clearly feel that something was wrong with Alex. She tried to turn around again, but Alex stopped her once more. Ellie was held tightly from behind, and she couldn’t see Alex’s expression.
After a brief silence, Ellie reassured him, saying, “I’ve grown up, lex. If I let other people’s words affect me, I wouldn’t have agreed to your proposal.”

At the water bar counter, Alex opened the pill bottle in his hand and dropped a white pill into the milk cup. After hesitating for a moment, he dropped another pill into the cup.
The room was so quiet that it was almost suffocating, only the crisp sound of the metal spoon stirring the milk against the cup could be heard.
“Alex?” Ellie called out.
Alex froze and stopped his movements.
Ellie, without him noticing, had appeared in front of him and taken the pill bottle from his hand. “I saw you putting something in the milk.”
Ellie shook the pill bottle in her hand and looked directly into Alex’s eyes. She asked him, “Is this glass of milk for me to drink?”
Their eyes met, and Alex’s breath caught. His gaze was erratic, and he looked down to avoid Ellie’s stare. Then he reached out and took the pill bottle from Ellie’s hand.
“You’re right. I did add something to your milk,” Alex admitted freely. Looking into Ellie’s questioning eyes, Alex showed her the instructions on the pill bottle.
As a medical student, Ellie recognized the medicine with just a glance. With a look of disbelief, she turned to Alex and asked, “Alex, why did you give me birth control pills?”
Ellie was a bit agitated and said, “If you don’t want us to have a child, then why did you propose to me and want to marry
me?!”
“Ellie, listen to me!” Faced with Ellie’s questions, Alex took the pill bottle from her hand and put it aside.
