“Throat slitting?” The two words escaped Alex’s lips through gritted teeth. His voice came out as if forced from the depths of his chest. Just the thought of a sharp blade slicing through Ellie’s neck sent tremors racing through his heart.
He didn’t go into Ellie’s hospital room. Instead, Alex chose to quietly observe from the window. When Aaron walked out and noticed Alex at the entrance, he discreetly stopped in his tracks.
“Thank you, Barry, for today,” Aaron said politely.
Barry replied, “You’re too kind, Aaron. It was Mr. Warren’s order.”
“Thank you, Mr. Warren,” Aaron acknowledged, glancing at Alex. Although he didn’t want to engage further with Alex, he couldn’t stop thinking about what could have happened if Barry hadn’t been watching over his sister today.
“Aaron, let me stay here tonight,” Alex suddenly pleaded. Aaron frowned at his insistence. Alex stepped closer and spoke softly, urgency filling his tone.
“I will stay tonight,” Aaron insisted firmly. Alex gave one last look at Ellie in her hospital room before leaving, his face remaining calm.
Inside the ward, Ellie lay curled up in her blanket, still shaken. Even though she knew Barry was with the Warren family’s bodyguards protecting her, she had wanted to stay alert.
If she hadn’t been on guard and if Barry hadn’t arrived just in time, Ethan could have killed her. As memories of Ethan’s hateful stare played in her mind, Ellie quietly shut her eyes.
“Ellie, don’t worry. Ethan won’t get away with this. The police will catch him soon,” Lacey reassured her, sitting beside the bed. Lacey instinctively touched her own neck, still feeling shaken. “You’ve been feeling pretty weak; let the doctor check you out.”
Hearing Lacey’s concern, Ellie gently stroked her abdomen. “It’s just a small wound, no need for an exam,” she replied, trying to sound nonchalant. “I’m just a bit anxious–I haven’t slept well. In a few hours, I can go home.”
If she agreed to an examination, everyone would find out about her pregnancy. Alex would surely hear about it too, which would lead to a lot of distractions and his persistent questioning–an outcome she desperately wanted to avoid.
When Alex walked in, Lacey stood up and left the room. Alex moved closer to Ellie’s bedside, studying her carefully. A long silence fell between them, and neither of them spoke.
“I’m sorry.” The many things he wanted to say got stuck in his throat, leaving just that single apology. “I will make sure Ethan is dealt with; you won’t have to live in fear anymore.”
The turmoil in her life was because of him. It was all his fault. He had to fix this to bring back peace to Ellie’s life. But with her not wanting to speak to him, Alex fell silent.
He continued to gaze at Ellie for a long moment before reluctantly leaving. Several hours later, Aaron quietly took Ellie back to the Thompson residence.
That night in Ellie’s hospital room, Aaron lay on the bed, aware of the sound of the door lock clicking. In the dark, lit only by a faint light peeking through the curtains, he instantly recognized Ethan as the intruder.
As Ethan approached the bed and flicked open a knife in his hand, Aaron reacted quickly, launching a kick. The knife fell from Ethan’s grip. With the lights now on, Ethan finally realized who was confronting him.
“It’s you?” His eyes widened in shock. Realizing he’d been outsmarted, Ethan grabbed the knife from the floor and tried to run. But Aaron quickly subdued him in moments.
Just as Aaron had secured Ethan against the bed, one hand holding him down while the other dialed the police, a nurse

entered for her rounds. She screamed when she saw the two men.
In that split second, Ethan broke free, using the nurse to shield himself as he rushed out of the room. “Mr. Thompson, get ready to collect your sister’s corpse.”
At the entrance of the ward, Ethan, with a menacing sneer, taunted Aaron before escaping through the window using a pre- prepared rope.
“Stop!” Barry, who was hiding, instinctively chased after Ethan. Surrounded by the Warren family’s bodyguards and the police, Ethan rushed onto the road.
Alex slammed his foot on the gas pedal, and with a loud bang, Ethan was thrown into the air. With a heavy crash, Ethan landed in the bushes beside the road, where police swiftly arrested him.
Alex got out of his car, finally at ease once he saw Ethan being led away in handcuffs. “Thank you.” Aaron nodded at Alex before getting into the car and leaving. With Ethan caught, everyone let out a collective sigh of relief.
“Ethan accidentally killed his own mom and attacked Ellie multiple times. He can serve several years in prison,” Winnie remarked.
Patrick looked at Quinlee. “People like him don’t deserve sympathy.”
“Right.” Quinlee nervously added, “I was foolish to show him kindness before; I almost aided him in his wicked ways, thinking it was goodwill.”
As news of Ethan’s capture reached her, Quinlee felt a wave of anxiety wash over her, though she pretended to look innocent before Patrick and Winnie.
Quinlee said, “I meant to help him because of loyalty to an old friend, not realizing how dangerous he truly was. Thank goodness the police found him; it would have been terrifying otherwise.”
Two days later, at the Thompson residence, Ellie shared her thoughts with her family after lunch. “I’d like to go out for a few days to clear my mind.”
With Ethan locked up, her worries had eased. She needed to act quickly regarding the abortion while it was still early, hoping to return to a normal life soon.
“Even if you want to take a break, you have to attend my wedding first,” Nalani chimed in, entering the living room. Whitney interrupted, “You always love to make decisions for others.”
Nalani sat next to Whitney, pretending to be sad. “I’m carrying Layton’s baby; how can I bring my child into this world without a wedding?”
Ellie asked, “Nalani, when is your wedding?”
Nalani responded, “Three days from now.”
