On a warm July evening, the city square buzzed with people trying to escape the heat. Ellie sat on the steps beside the fountain with her close friends, Diana and Lacey, while her two children played nearby.
“I envy you so much, Ellie,” Lacey said, her eyes filled with jealousy as she looked at Ellie’s kids. “You have such a wonderful family, a great job, and now two adorable little ones. You’re basically the picture of success in life.”
Ellie just smiled, keeping quiet about the struggles she had faced along the way.
Lacey leaned over to Díana and asked, “Diana, are you going to leave again after this visit?”
“It depends on the situation,” Diana replied, absentmindedly rubbing her nose.
Ellie glanced at Diana but didn’t say anything. Just then, a splash of water hit them unexpectedly, soaking all three of them. At first, they thought it was a prank from the children, but when they looked up, they saw it was Yvette and her sister, Livia.
Not far away, Yvette stood by the fountain, washing her hands and unaware of what had just happened. “Yvette, are you blind?” Diana shouted in frustration.
Seeing the three women, Yvette exchanged glances with her sister and walked over. “Ellie, fancy running into you,” she greeted, offering no apology at all.
Ellie chose to ignore her, standing next to Diana, who handed tissues to them while asking Yvette, “Did you not notice you soaked us?”
Yvette looked at Diana with fake innocence, not awkward at all. “I’m really sorry, Ms. Grant, but I didn’t see you
there.”
As Diana clenched her fists to keep calm, Yvette continued provocatively, “Livia, do you remember the nasty woman who came between Aaron and me years ago? He’d rather stay single than be with her. Isn’t that sad?”
Diana snapped, unable to hold back her anger. “Who are you referring to, Yvette?”
Yvette retorted with a challenging look, “Ms. Grant, don’t take it personally.”
In a flash, Diana slapped Yvette before anyone could react. Yvette held her stinging cheek, looking around in shock. “How dare you hit me?”
Diana shot back, “Do you think you can annoy me and still enjoy yourself?”
With another swift kick, Diana knocked Livia to the ground, leaving her crying in pain. Yvette received another slap, which left her screaming and covering her face. A crowd quickly gathered, forming a tight circle around the scene.
“What’s happening here?” Aaron pushed his way through the crowd, arriving just in time to see Diana pulling Yvette by her hair while slapping her. Spotting Aaron, Diana quickly let go.
Yvette crawled toward Aaron, tears streaming down her face. “Aaron, you saw everything. Ms. Grant hit me, and she hit my sister too. I’m calling the police; you have to testify for me.”
Aaron turned to Diana, who just shrugged him off in anger. After a moment of silence, Aaron said, “I’m sorry, but I didn’t see anything.”
A shocked murmur swept through the crowd. Lacey looked at Aaron in disbelief and gave him a thumbs up. Ellie was equally stunned, realizing that Aaron, known for always telling the truth, had chosen to ignore what was clear.
He had just watched the whole thing but decided to keep quiet. Gently, Ellie tugged on Diana’s hand, urging her to turn and
face Aaron.

Diana was taken aback by the fact that Aaron, in front of so many witnesses, would abandon his principles to protect her.
Yvette and Livia couldn’t believe Aaron’s response. Livia exclaimed, “Aaron, with so many witnesses, how can you prosecutor, fail to see right from wrong?”
Remaining calm, Aaron repeated, “I’m sorry, I really didn’t see anything.” Yvette, unable to handle the humiliation, ran away
in tears.
Five years ago, Yvette had met Aaron on a blind date, and although they never pursued anything, further, he hadn’t dared anyone else since.
She had always thought that Aaron still had feelings for her, believing that after their breakup, he hadn’t found andber woman suitable for him.
Now she realized it wasn’t that he was just focused on his career or hadn’t met the right person, he had been waiting for
Diana.
Livia, furious, cursed under her breath as she chased after Yvette.
“Hey, Lacey, will you go to the restroom with me and the kids?” Ellie asked
She turned to Aaron and said, “Aaron, just wait for us here with Diana.”
Ellie noticed Aaron still looking at Diana and decided to leave with Lacey and the kids. As the crowd began to spit apans Aaron remained at the fountain, watching Diana walk toward him slowly.
“You clearly saw me hit her earlier. Why did you deny it?” Diana finally spoke up.
Aaron replied seriously, “I really didn’t see it.”
Diana changed her approach. “After being away for five years, why haven’t you gotten married?”
Aaron looked down. “I haven’t met the right person.”
Diana pressed further, “Is it that you haven’t found the right person, or are you just hoping that I’ll never come back?”
“Do you really think keeping you away, with me here alone, helps me at all?” Aaron blurted, a hint of irritation in his voice as their eyes locked.
Aaron continued, “You caused this situation. You blocked me and left. Declan only has you as his daughter and you left him like that.”
Aaron continued, “Your brothers have tried everything to bring you back, but you refuse to listen to them
Diana interrupted, “Did you miss me while I was gone for these five years?”
Aaron fell silent. Seeing his stillness, she poked him gently in the side. “I’m asking you.”
Aaron stepped back slightly, avoiding her touch. Diana stepped closer and poked him again, saying. “In these five years, your family has pressured you to marry. But you stay away from blind dates and relationships. I can’t help but wonder: is it about
me?”
Aaron grabbed her restless hand. “You’re pretending not to know?”
Diana couldn’t help but smile. Aaron’s serious gaze returned to her as he declared, “What happened between us might be a mystery to others, but you know the truth in your heart.”
Diana replied, “I’m not asking you to marry me.”

Noticing Aaron’s irritation, Diana moved a little closer to him. “Aaron, I’m sorry.” she suddenly said, catching him off guard. “Five years ago, what I did in the hotel without thinking was definitely wrong.” Diana finally found the courage to apologize to Aaron after all this time.
Aaron stayed quiet, his eyes focused on her. “Do you really mean your apology?”
“Believe it or not,” Diana rolled her eyes, then flexed her wrist. “I hit Yvette’s hairpin earlier; it’s so painful.”
Aaron took her hand and started massaging her wrist. He began to lecture her, “From now on, be careful. Don’t get into fights so easily. If you run into someone stronger, it could be worse than just a bruised hand.”
As she listened to Aaron’s fatherly advice, Diana found it hard to hide the smile forming on her lips. She playfully wrapped her arm around his waist while a hand was clutched by Aaron.
She teased, “Say something nice to me, and I just might think about staying.”
Aaron replied, “Your dad just called, urging you to hurry home.” Diana was speechless at his lack of romantic understanding.
