Chapter 278
“That little widow dares to hang up on me,” muntered Alex, sprawled out on the couch in his white bathrobe, his eyes glued to his phone.
The sash around his waist was loosely tied, and water droplets from his tousled hair trickled down his forehead, rolling down to his exposed chest.
A scar across his forehead, a reminder of a mischievous encounter with Ellie, added a wild charm to his otherwise relaxed and rakish look.
“Mr. Warren, dinner is served. Barry announced as he walked in from the dining room, noticing Alex lounging on the couch, absorbed in his phone
“Come pick me up at eleven tomorrow morning.” Alex replied, still not moving from his comfortable position on the couch when Barry left.
Thinking about Alex’s five years in prison, Harry figured it was only natural for him to enjoy a litle fun now that he could finally interact with women again..
Just as he was about to enter the elevator, he was startled by a figure that appeared in front of him.
“Mrs. Warren,” Barry exclaimed, taken aback by the furious Nancy standing at the door, looking as though she had materialized out of thin air.
“I want to know what Alex has been up to lately, Nancy demanded, her gaze piercing through Barry.
“Mr. Warren has
as been busy looking into a few board members and the vice president. Barry replied cautiously, trying to keep the peace.
“Don’t cover for him. Nancy stepped closer and Barry instinctively recoiled.
Nancy added, “It’s not like he’s been at the office, and he hasn’t brought back a girlfriend. He’s been out of touch. He’s not really working”
Barry groaned to himself; he couldn’t really tell Nancy that Alex was caught up in flirting with a little widow.
“Barry, you have to tell me the truth. Alex hasn’t really gotten involved with some widow, has he?” Nancy’s concern sent Barry into a near panic
No one knows a son better than his mother, and Nancy was proof of that, “M–Mrs. Warren–Barry stuttered, tongue–tied and unable to finish his thought.
“That little rascal, I swear I’ll slap him” Her anger only grew as Barry’s reaction spurred her on. Turning with determination, heels clicking sharply, Nancy stormed toward the door, frustration radiating off her as she nearly broke the doorbell with her slap.
“What the hell? Who’s there?” Alex’s annoyed voice came from inside the apartment as he opened the door.
“You Lule scoundrel. Nancy burst in, hand raised to strike, while Alex ducked back, instinctively avoiding her.
“Mom, you’re way 100 old for this. Can’t you just state your business without being so impulsive?” Alex retreated behind the sofa, quickly fastening his bathrobe.
“What
happened to your face? Nancy’s attention fell on the noticeable wound marring her son’s handsome features, instantly cooling her anger.
“It was just an accident, Alex replied, brushing his fingers against the small scratch Ellie had given him with her key.
Nancy turned her scrutinizing gaze toward Barry, who was breathing slowly. “M–Mrs Warren
“Shut up.” Nancy and Alex said simultaneously, cutting Barry all
“Come to me,” Nancy commanded. With a heavy heart, Alex approached his Mom, bracing himself for what came next.
“I told you to be careful Nancy grabbed a chunk of Alex’s arm and twisted it painfully, pulling an immediate yelp from him
Alex said, “Mom, that hurts.”
e him fall silent once more
“Mrs. Warren, Mr. Warren’s arm is hurt, Barry said, but the tense looks from Nancy and Alex made
Alex shot Harry a desperate glare, hoping to prevent his Mom from noticing his injury, but Nancy’s hand came down on him with a swift slap. “How did you get hurt like this?” she pressed, her expression darkening.
Alex but she
slightly and said nothing. Harry kept his head down, wishing he could disappear into a cupboard and avoid the confrontation.
“Did you get into trouble with some married woman Nancy speculated, arriving a shocking conclusion.
Before his imprisonment, Alex had gotten close with Ellie, and now that he was free after live long years, it was easy in think he would be eager to find a fernale cranjanion.
Nancy said, “Alex, I understand the urgency, but if you’re looking for someone, make sure she’s trustworthy. Even if we’re not as wealthy as before, we still have a good standing in the jaslands elite.

u understand?
“You must not get involved d with married women, and you especially can’t mess with a widow, do you
As Alex endured Nancy’s relentless lecture, his expression turned increasingly sullen “Mom, with my looks, even if I weren’t the heir to the Warren family, women still throw themselves at me as soon as I walk out the door.”
He continued casually, “Even in my most desperate state, I wouldn’t think about bringing home a widow. I was just joking that day, and you took it seriously
Nancy let out a sigh of relief, feeling a weight
lift at
her son’s
‘s reassurance.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I’m nobody’s backup plan. I have no interest in becoming a stepdad, Alex added.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll make sure some young ladies get introduced to you; you should go on a few blind dates,” Nancy suggested, a hint of excitement in her voice.
issues at the company, I’ll find someone on my own,” Alex replied
“Honestly, with my looks, who needs blind dates? Once I handle some issues: dismissively, ushering Nancy toward the door.
He said, “Mom, I really have things to take care of and I need to rest carly. You should head home and take a breather.”
“And you should leave too, Alex added, pushing Barry out the door along with his Mom.
“Im still not reassured, Nancy declared firmly, standing at the entrance, casting wary glances between the closed door and an obviously nervous Barry.
She could no longer let her son tread down this path; she swore to keep a close watch on him. She was determined to find out exactly what her son had been doing. Nancy thought, ‘Not another Ellie, I won’t allow it‘
Just as Ellie was about to leave, she suddenly sneezed. Rubbing her nose, she grabbed a shawl and stuffed it into her bag.
“Ellic, running back and forth to the hospital isn’t a solution. Do you want me to help you clean up your new place that Whitney suggested you move into? You should stay there for a while, Joanna said as she approached with concern.
–
“No need for that, Mom. The place has been renovated. Fll head over tomorrow and tidy it up enough to live in Ellic assured her, offering a reassuring smile.
“You’re busy with work now, plus the new place is closer to the hospital, so your commute will be easier. It’ll also be more convenient once school starts for the kids,” Joanna pointed out, accompanying Ellie to the door.
“Got it, Mom. I’ll move as soon as I can,” Ellie promised before driving off to the hospital.
Orion had just checked into the hospital and was feeling emotionally unstable. To ensure safety, Ellie and Mark had arranged to alternate shifts Originally, Mark was supposed to be on duty that night, but he called to say he had something unexpected come up and asked Ellie to cover for him instead.
After checking on patients and finding everything normal, Ellie went to the duty room to get
ret some rest.
The night passed without incident, and in the morning, as she prepared to hand over her shift to Mark and tidy up her new place, she spotted Mark approaching from a distance.
“If Lacey comes asking, just say you haven’t seen me. You keep working; I need to drop by the ward first.” Mark rushed in like a whirlwind, disappearing into the clevator before Ellie had a chance to respond.
Ellie stood there, taken aback, just as Lacey hurried over. “Ellie, have you seen Mark?”
“I saw him heading toward the ward just now.” Before Ellic could think of how to respond, Quinlee painted in the direction Mark had just gone.
“Ellie, I can’t talk to you right now, I’ll be in big trouble if I can’t find Mark Lacey dashed after the elevator.
