The liule garden under the apartment building was dark and cold in the dead of winter, but it couldn’t compare to the chill in Ellie’s heart.
Alex’s defense of Haley had gone to a point where he couldn’t sell right from wrong. Ellie didn’t want to get caught in an endless loop of self- justification and had no desire to explain anything more.
The two stared at each other in silence. Alex took off his coat, intending to put it on Ellie Without thinking, she took a step hark. His hand, meant to drape the coat over her, missed as he looked at her with eyes growing darker.
Ellie suppressed the feeling of injustice and murmured. “I thought Haley would be my friend for life. She never cared that I was just a poor girl from the countryside and wanted to be friends anyway: Feven gave her the only thing I had–a man’s necklace and she wouldn’t accept it.”
Alex frowned, stepping closer to Fillie. “Where did you get a man’s necklace from!”
Seeing Alex’s brows slowly knoning. Ellie looked away, her eyes reblening. That necklace was given to her by a boy she had recklessly tried to save. when she was little.
Back then, she had been unconscious for a week alter saving that boy, and when she woke up, he was nowhere to be found. Later, the neckline mysteriously disappeared.
If it weren’t for her, her father wouldn’t have lost a leg and been forced to live on constant medication. If it weren’t for her, the Thompson family wouldn’t have fallen into such terrible financial ruin. This was a pain she never wanted to talk about again in her life.

Alex stood there, gripping the coat in his hand, unable to tear his eyes away from Ellie’s retreating figure for a long time.
Late at night at the Earl Hotel’s inner club, Haley found Alex, who was passed out on the sofa, completely drunk.

The room was filled with the heavy smell of alcohol and tobacco. Haley pinched her nose and came over.

“You have to be the kind–hearted and pure Haley I knew hack then, the one who saved me regardless of the risk and promised never to let go of my hand even if it meant getting hunt with me.”

The shiny badge on his left chest marked his status, a dream he’d pursued for years. Now, as a respected prosecutor, he had finally achieved his dream

Haley lost her temper and shouted at Aaron, “You and Ebe really are siblings, equally clueless and dirt poor. Even though you’re a prosecutor now, you can’t escape your background. You’re just as poor as ever, so what are you proud of?
