Chapter 14
The old village chief hesitated momentarily, his expression laced with confusion.
“Sasha, what nonsense are you spouting?”
“How could I have possibly killed your entire family? Have you been overworking yourself? Is your mind not clear?”
Even now, he clung to his act.
I let out a cold laugh, my gaze sharp as a blade.
“Village Chief, you went to great lengths to get what you wanted.”
“You orchestrated murders, created a puppet to impersonate my grandfather, and wove an elaborate web of lies.”
“Did you truly believe your scheme was flawless?”
The warmth drained from his face. Meeting my unyielding stare, he chuckled before discarding his pretense.
His kind demeanor vanished like mist in the morning sun. He leaned back in his chair, his gaze turning cold.
“So, you’ve uncovered everything?”
I nodded. “That’s
right.”
“The so–called renowned seer you spoke of isn’t my grandfather, it’s you.”
“And the cursed lone star isn’t me; it’s your granddaughter.”
“Am I wrong?”
The village chief didn’t flinch.
Instead, an amused glint flickered in his eyes as he regarded me with
interest.
“Go on,” he said smoothly. “Tell me what else you know.”
A triumphant smile played on my lips as I spoke, my voice slow and deliberate.
“You were there on my dad’s birthday.”
“You were there on my wedding day.”
“So, when my dad and Lincoln looked terrified right before they died, they weren’t looking at me.”

“They were looking at you, standing right behind me.”
“Am I wrong?”
As I pieced everything together, the once–scattered fragments of confusion aligned into a chilling truth.
Every bizarre coincidence that plagued me now had a pattern that led straight to him.
My dad and Lincoln had raised a toast to the village chief before they collapsed.
And when my mom shoved me into the secret passage that night, I heard his voice echoing inside.
Back then, grief had clouded my mind, drowning me in sorrow too deep to notice the cracks in the story.
But now, with a clear mind, I could see every small detail I had overlooked had been the key to unlocking everything.
The old village chief gave a low chuckle, his eyes gleaming with
amusement.
“Not bad,” he mused. “You’re much smarter than I gave you credit for.”
I didn’t waver and continued, “My birthday is the same as your granddaughter’s. I didn’t cause the raging winds that day; she caused them.”
“As a renowned seer, you immediately recognized her power.”
“You knew that to change her fate, you had to swap her life with mine since we were born at the same time.”
“So, when my dad and Lincoln raised a toast to you, you poisoned them, then twisted their minds, forcing them to take their own lives.”
“And that wasn’t enough.”
“You used forbidden rituals to manipulate my mom, making her take the blame for you.”
“In the end, you staged her death, tying up every loose end so no one would ever suspect the truth.”
“You did all of this to shatter me, to break my spirit, so you could use my weakness to bend me to your will, twisting fate to serve your granddaughter instead.”
The old village chief didn’t deny a word.

“So, you’ve unraveled everything.” His eyes gleamed with a quiet challenge. “But do you still dare to step into my trap?”
A faint smile played on my lips as I met his gaze, my voice cold.
“Your skills are indeed impressive.”
“But you overestimate yourself.”
“You never realized that being too clever has its consequences.”
The old village chief’s eyes darkened slightly, suspicion flickering in their depths.
“What do you mean by that?”
I met his gaze without a trace of fear.
“Do you know? No matter how many times the forensic experts and police insisted my mom took her own life, I never believed it.”
“She wouldn’t have rushed to send me away only to turn around and end
her life for no reason.”
“And considering my dad and Lincoln’s deaths, I knew someone was pulling the strings from the shadows.”
“I didn’t understand their purpose back then, but one thing was certain: if they had gone to such lengths to erase everyone around me, they would eventually come for me too.”
“So, I lit candles at my parents‘ graves.”
“The moment the real culprit came looking for me, they would have already inhaled the poison.”
“But to avoid harming innocent visitors, that alone wasn’t enough to be
fatal.”

“The poison is already merging inside you.”
My dad had always been cautious when it came to life and death. He had taught me everything he knew about poisons, always saying that knowledge was the key to survival.

I never thought I would one day use what he taught me to avenge him.
The old village chief’s face twisted in shock at my words.
He lurched forward, attempting to strike, but his body gave out beneath him, collapsing like a lifeless heap.
“You… you wretched girl! How dare you deceive me?” His voice was laced with fury, his eyes burning with hatred as if he wanted to rip me apart.
I rose to my feet, towering over him, my voice cold as steel.
“You were the one who played dirty all along.”
“I simply returned the favor.”
Just as the words left my lips, the door burst open. Merrick stormed in, leading a team of officers.
I had taken no chances; I had sent Merrick my location before coming
here.
The old village chief stared, stunned. He opened his mouth to protest, but before he could utter a word, I handed Merrick the recording of our
conversation.
“He already confessed to everything.”
Merrick’s gaze held a new depth of admiration.
“I misjudged the situation before and almost let the real culprit slip away,” he admitted. “But you never gave up.”
“Your parents and Lincoln would be proud of you.”
“I just didn’t want them to die without knowing the truth.”
With that, I turned and walked away.
Not long after, the old village chief was sentenced to death for intentional homicide.
As for me, I carried forward my father’s principle–to cherish life.
And I lived.
Because if my parents and Lincoln were watching from beyond, I knew they would want me to keep moving forward, unafraid of the future.
