After finishing my shower, I saw Zachary, who had also finished washing up, watching a
movie on my projector
Whose home is this anyway?
Seeing me arrive, he pulled me over:
Lets watch a movie before sleeping.”
I was about to get up, but found I couldn’t shake off Zachary’s hand.
“If you don’t watch the movie, I’ll keep holding your hand. Wherever you go, I’ll go.”
I gave up struggling and sat down beside him.
Zachary
I called his name softly.
“Hom?”
He looked over, backlit.
“After today, can you not come find me again? I don’t want to have any more contact with
you.”
“When I see you, I think of that time before, I see the self without dignity.”
“So, can you stop pulling me back into the pain of the past?”
He saw the pain in my eyes.
I seemed to see his eyes turn red too.
The end credits of the movie slowly started playing.
As if announcing the end of everything.
At this moment, I heard his voice:
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know I would cause you so much pain. I promise you, I won’t appear
again in the future.”
Then, he smiled, but his eyes were so bitter:
“Can I watch over you while you sleep tonight? I’ll just sit beside you.”
“It’s the last look, at least let me look my fill.”
Zachary really did as he said, sitting on the floor by the bed, arranging my blanket.
“Do you need me to tell you a bedtime story?”
Zachary leaned against the bed, smiling tenderly.
I shook my head, hiding under the blanket.
“Alright, then goodnight.”
Zachary turned off the light for me.
After a long while, I felt my hand being gently held.
Then I heard a voice that seemed unreal:
“Lily, have you thought of me at all these years? Even for just a second!”
“These years, I often couldn’t sleep well. I had to fight with the old man, fight with those old guys in the company. Sometimes I felt so tired.”
“I would think it would be good if you were here, but then I’d be glad you weren’t, so those old guys wouldn’t trouble you.”
“Lily, actually I’ve come to see you secretly many times. Watching you participate, in competitions with your classmates, watching you hold trophies and give acceptance speeches, watching you hang out and take photos with friends.”
speeches, watching you hang out and take photos with friends.”
“I’m happy that you’re doing well, that you’re taking good care of yourself.”
“I used to think my Lily was a soft flower, but now I know my Lily is a tall, unyielding tree.”
“Lily, I once said our account wasn’t settled.”
“But today you looked at me so painfully, talking about your suffering, when just a second ago at the dance party those eyes were full of laughter.”
“Lily, smile more. I won’t appear in front of you anymore in the future.”
I felt tears fall from him.
