After my dad passed away, my stepmother often scolded me.
“What are you looking at? I’m not going to raise you. It’s all because your dad was
short–lived!”
My stepmother pushed me away as she berated me, getting into a taxi without looking
back.
Ignoring my scraped knees, I got up and chased after her, crying:
“Mom, please don’t abandon me. I’ll be good, I’ll eat very little.”
I don’t know how long I chased, but the car finally stopped.
I saw my stepmother’s eyes were red, filled with hatred and helplessness.
And so, I began to rely on my stepmother for survival.
Later, she remarried.
The man was ten years older than her.
This marriage became my hell.
On the first night we moved in with my stepmother, the man opened my locked room door with a key.
When I ran out to tell my stepmother, I received a slap.
“Don’t spread lies here. He was just worried you might kick off your blanket and catch a cold. If you dare ruin my marriage, get out!”
After that, every time I returned to my room, I would push the desk against the door.
Then at midnight, I would stand by the bed, holding scissors, watching the door being pushed.

Once, twice, three times.
Only when the person outside finally gave up would I dare to sleep.
At that time, school became my only sanctuary.
No disgusting stepfather, no cold stepmother.
But this sanctuary also became hell after a mock exam.
I had just happily gotten first place for myself.
The next second, I was dragged into the bathroom and doused with a bucket of cold
water.
I was held down and couldn’t fight back.
The mastermind was a pretty transfer student, I remember her name was Chloe Lambert.
“Lily, it’s all because of you that I only got second place this time. Do you know how many beatings I got at home?”
Chloe gripped my chin, looking at me like a rat.
As the slaps fell, I heard someone beside Chloe counting.
It was long and torturous.
When I told the teacher about this incident, I only got one response:
“Chloe is an excellent student, she wouldn’t do such a thing.”
“When there’s conflict between classmates, you need to be understanding and forgiving
of each other.”
At that moment, I realized it wasn’t that Chloe wouldn’t do it, but that the Lambert family
was too powerful, and they didn’t dare to intervene.
As I was leaving the office, I saw a boy walking towards me, surrounded by people.
