Chapter 98
Shane quickly pulled himself together and brought me back to the villa, making sure I had everything I needed.
In just two weeks, I was back to normal, proof of how well he had taken care of me. Not wanting him to dwell on guilt again, I changed the subject. “Let’s talk about something else. I had a dream about you last night.”
Shane raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh? What kind of dream?“}
I hesitated for a moment before speaking.
“I dreamed that I… died in a fire,” I said quietly. “You got on the first flight back and when you arrived at the scene, you completely broke down. You spent hours digging through the rubble, gathering my ashes… piece by piece.“}
Shane’s expression darkened, but I forced out a small laugh.
“You even built me a monument,” I continued. “And on it, you wrote… Shane Simmon’s wife.”
The second the words left my mouth, my face flushed. Shane, however, wasn’t laughing. His brows furrowed, his eyes dark and unreadable, as if he had lived that moment himself.”
For a long time, he said nothing. Then, in a quiet, serious voice, he asked, “Lara… if that really happened, what would you think? Would you blame me for putting my name on your tombstone?”
Something inside me froze. That dream, it had felt too real and suddenly, I understood. It wasn’t just a dream.”
It was a memory. Before I could say anything, loud banging on the iron gate outside snapped us out of it.”
Then came a voice, hoarse, desperate. “Lara, I know I was wrong! Please, come out and see me! I don’t agree to the divorce!”
Shane and I rushed outside. Standing at the gate was Justin.
He looked rough, his face hollow, his eyes bloodshot, his clothes covered in dust like he had traveled here in a hurry.
But the moment he saw me, his entire face lit up with relief. “I finally found you!” His voice cracked with emotion. “Lara, please come home with me. I know I was wrong. I see Leah for who she really is now, I was blind before.“}]
His hands clenched at his sides, his voice thick with desperation.”
“But I swear, I’ll make it right. I’ll spend every day proving it. I’ll never hurt you again, never make you cry again. Just… give me one more chance.“@
His sudden change in attitude made one thing clear. He must have finally seen Leah’s true colors. Maybe he finally realized I was the one who donated my kidney to him.”
However, it didn’t matter anymore. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice.
In my last life, he had also changed after I gave him my kidney, suddenly acting like a devoted husband, staying home, promising I was the only one he loved. And then, when I was about to give birth, he set me on fire.
Who was to say if I forgave him now, it wouldn’t end the same way?!
I looked at him, steady and calm, then shook my head. “Justin, the divorce papers I left already say everything I need to say,” I told him. “I don’t love you anymore. Let’s just end this. Don’t come looking for me again, pretend we never met.“}]
“No–no!” His voice broke and before I could react, he dropped to his knees. Desperate.
“Don’t say anything else,” he begged, his voice hoarse. “Everything that happened, it was all my fault. But if you don’t divorce me, I’ll do anything. Anything you ask. Even my life, you can take it if you want.“}]
His hands clenched at his sides, his shoulders trembling.
“Lara, I tried to kill myself seven times and you saved me every time. Ten years ago, it was your parents who saved my life.” His voice cracked completely. “I owe you forever. Please… just let me stay by your side. That’s all I ask.”
And then-
“Lara, step aside.” A firm, steady voice cut through the air.”
