Chapter 8
A month later, I heard about him again from the gossip in the company’s break
room.
“Did you guys hear that the CEO of the Brooks Group has been cheated on?”
“Really? Is that woman crazy? Mr. Brooks is wealthy and powerful, and she actually dares to cheat on him. Isn’t she afraid of
retaliation?”
“My aunt is a doctor at Warren Hospital. You know, that private hospital’s patients are all the elite. I heard that woman was initially the mistress. She pushed out the previous Mrs. Brooks and took her place. She even married Mr. Brooks with a baby bump.”
I coughed lightly. Although I didn’t care much anymore, hearing others gossip about that was still a bit awkward.
She continued gossiping, “I heard the

woman gave birth half a month ago, but the son she gave birth to had curly hair. But no one in their family has curly hair genes, so they immediately took a paternity test! Guess what happened?”
She answered herself, “The child was indeed not Mr. Brooks‘ son. Mr. Brooks‘ mother slapped the woman on the spot. Mr. Brooks also said he wanted a divorce.”
Another colleague sighed, “Indeed, the elite circle is really complicated. But Mr. Brooks is not a good person either,
abandoning his original wife. He deserves this result!”
Coincidentally, one of the protagonists of the gossip actually came to my door that night.
I looked somewhat speechless at Laura, who was squatting at my door, holding a baby. I asked, “What do you want? I haven’t contacted Zach for a long time. If you’re

looking for a mistress, you’ve come to the
wrong person.”
Laura directly hugged my thigh and pleaded, “Nora, please help me. I was driven out by Zach’s mother. That old
woman even asked me to leave with
nothing. I really have nowhere to go. Can you take us in?”
“Where are your parents?” I asked.
She wailed, “My parents have wanted to disown me since they knew I was pregnant with Zach’s child. They think I’m a disgrace to them for being a mistress.”
“So why do you think I would take you in? What makes you think I’m a kind–hearted saint? Don’t forget how you used to show off in front of me. Now, I’m being more than kind by not hitting you. You should leave.”
She continued to cry, “No, I won’t leave. Nora, you can’t have children, right? I can give my son to you. Raise him. I don’t want

him.”
She put down his son and tried to run.
I grabbed her arm with one hand and dialed Zach’s number with the other. “Laura is causing trouble here. Come and take her away.”
A few minutes later, Zach arrived by car. He stuffed Laura and the baby into the car, closed the door, and then turned to look at
- me.
I took a step back and turned to go upstairs.
