Book 1 My Husband Has an Overly Close Sister
I had been married to Dylan Watson for five years, and I always knew he loved children.
So on our anniversary, I returned home in secret, a pregnancy test with two bright lines in my hand, ready to give him the biggest surprise.
The door swung open to a dimly lit room, the only light coming from a few flickering candles on the dining table.
Dylan Watson sat at the table, head lowered in concentration as he cut into his steak, while the girl across from him held up her phone, recording.
“Doctor Watson is so handsome and

thoughtful. I wish I could be his little sister forever”
Dylan smiled as he looked up at her–only for the edge of his gaze to catch sight of me standing at the door.
“Claire? Why did you come back without telling me?”
His brows furrowed as he looked at me, not a trace of guilt or panic on his face, as if I were merely interrupting an ordinary dinner.
My expression instantly turned cold.
“Without telling you? That would require you to actually ask.”
When I finished, I lowered my gaze to my phone. Our last conversation was still frozen on last night’s “Good night.”

The hours I spent on the plane had been our usual video call time.
Before I left, I had racked my brain for an excuse to skip the call, all so I could surprise him.
Turns out, I never needed an excuse- yet I did get a surprise. Just not the kind I expected.
Seeing my darkened expression, he glanced at his phone screen as well. For a brief moment, something flashed across his face -guilt, perhaps–but before I could even speak, he beat me to it, impatiently.
“You know how busy I am. Is this really worth getting upset over?”
“Oh? So which part isn’t worth getting upset

over?” I scoffed. “Spending our anniversary having a candlelit dinner with another woman? Or failing to check in with your long–distance girlfriend for hours while she’s in a foreign country?”
I threw the roses in my hand at his feet, cutting him off before he could say another word. Then I turned and walked out the door.
The streets were empty and silent, the night wind biting cold against my skin. He didn’t come after me.
I wandered aimlessly, my legs growing numb, time slipping past unnoticed. Just as I was about to stop, my phone buzzed with a single notification.
A new visitor record on my Facebook.
The profile picture was a silhouette of a man

and a woman by the sea. The man’s side profile looked eerily familiar, and on impulse, I clicked in.
The latest post had been published just a minute ago.
“A romantic surprise from Doctor Watson: our one–month anniversary.”
Attached was a photo–Dylan Watson, pressing a kiss to the girl’s cheek.
A dull ache spread through my chest, the wind stinging my eyes.
My husband had forgotten our wedding anniversary–yet somehow, he remembered to celebrate a one–month anniversary with someone else.
I lay on the hotel bed, scrolling through the

girl’s Facebook posts.
In the comments, my husband affectionately called her Lily.
That name stirred a memory–Dylan Watson had mentioned her before.
More than half a month ago, there had been a shooting in the neighborhood where I was staying abroad. The entire block lost power.
Alone and hopeless in a pitch–dark room, I had called Dylan on video, my voice trembling with fear. But he barely paid attention, too absorbed in whatever was on his phone.
Then his phone rang.
He answered it, telling me that his patient, Lily Hall, had an emergency.

I knew his career was on the rise. A
psychologist always had to deal with urgent situations.
So I swallowed my unease, nodded understandingly, and told him to go.
The moment the words left my lips, he hung
- up.
The memory faded as my finger happened to scroll to Lily Hall’s post from that very night.
“Doctor Watson looks so handsome even when fixing a light bulb!”
Attached was a photo of Dylan in an
unfamiliar room, reaching up to screw in a light bulb.
His comment sat beneath it:

“I know you’re afraid of the dark. I ran two red lights to get there.”
A sudden, bitter urge to laugh rose in my chest.
Laugh at myself–kept in the dark, forgotten.
What had I been doing that night?
I had been silently relieved that the power outage meant he couldn’t see the tear tracks on my face–because I didn’t want to burden him, didn’t want to distract him from his
work.
And yet, the urgent work that made him abandon me in a blackout… was changing a light bulb for his patient.
I kept scrolling, my fingers trembling slightly.

Then I stopped–on a post from Valentine’s Day.
“St. Valentine’s Day gift from Doctor Watson! I can’t decide–which one should I choose?”
The picture showed two bracelets.
Dylan had commented:
“The one on the left–the diamond is bigger. It suits you better.”
I clicked on the image.
He was right. The left bracelet had a dazzling diamond, while the right one was only adorned with a few tiny stones.
I lowered my gaze to my wrist.

The bracelet I was wearing… was identical to the one in the picture.
The one that hadn’t been chosen.
A single tear slid down, falling with a soft, soundless drop.
