Chapter 5
My resentment toward Daniel Wells probably started at that moment.

It wasn’t my fault, and I was the biggest victim. So why did I have to bear the consequences of everything?
As soon as Grandma was admitted to the hospital, she was rushed into the emergency room. Before long, the Wells family arrived.
In front of me, Daniel Wells‘ grandmother slapped him hard across the face.
But I didn’t want to stop her. I just stared at the operating room door, waiting for the doctor to bring me good news.
But before long, the lights in the operating

room went out.
The doctor emerged and regretfully told me to say my goodbyes..
How absurd–goodbyes.
Just an hour ago, my grandma had been holding my hand with a smile, telling me she had made soft little clothes for her dear grandson.
And now, I was supposed to say goodbye?
Daniel Wells‘ grandmother cried terribly, repeatedly apologizing to me and to Grandma.
But I heard nothing. I just numbly held onto Grandma’s hand, terrified that if I let go, I might never touch her again.

“I know you’re not happy in your marriage. You just don’t want me to worry, so you don’t say anything” Grandma said from her bed, looking at me with tender eyes. “I’m sorry, Amara, but I can’t be with you anymore…”
Tears streamed down her face as she choked up. “Amara, what will you do? What if someone bullies you? What if no one treats you well? Who can I leave you with?”
“Don’t worry, good sister, I will take good care of Amara!” Daniel Wells‘ grandmother swore, her voice full of anguish, pulling Daniel Wells to make him promise.
Daniel Wells knelt beside the bed, speaking to Grandma. “Grandma, don’t worry, I’ll take good care of her from now on.”
Grandma gazed at him, her eyes clouded, and smiled sadly.

“The thing I regret most in this life is asking you to take care of her.”
She held my hand tightly, her eyes filled with a deep, unspoken sorrow.
But in the end, she left.
Leaving behind regret, bitterness, and a heart full of sorrow. She was gone.
I clutched my aching belly, torn between collapse and despair, and screamed in the operating room for most of the night before giving birth to George Wells.
Perhaps Daniel Wells felt guilty. After Grandma passed away, he rarely saw Esme Bellamy and often helped take care of the child.

Though we still didn’t talk much, at least we managed to show each other basic respect.
Esme Bellamy, heartbroken, went abroad and rarely contacted Daniel Wells after that.
I thought my life would remain like this.
Stuck in an unhappy marriage with a husband who didn’t love me, and a son I cherished dearly.
But then, Esme Bellamy came back.
And the moment she did, she took all of Daniel Wells‘ and George Wells‘ attention.
All the familial affection I might have once had and the love I’d never received–Esme Bellamy took it all, without hesitation.
On George Wells‘ birthday, she said she had

prepared a grand surprise for him. Without a second thought, George Wells ran to her.
Daniel Wells said that Esme Bellamy still didn’t like me, so they didn’t invite me to go along. Before sunset, he promised to bring George Wells back to spend my birthday with
- me.
But that day, they didn’t come back until the early hours of the morning.
Daniel Wells called, saying that George Wells had played too much and fallen asleep. He didn’t want to wake him, so they were resting outside.
The silent night stretched on as I sat by the window, for a long, long time.
I remembered Grandma, just before she passed, holding my hand and saying with

sorrow, “What will happen if no one treats you well?”
Grandma, I no longer like celebrating my birthday.
Out of politeness, I let the father and son in, offering them some water.
Sarah took the calendar from the shelf, pointing to a date circled in red: “This is Mom’s birthday”
George Wells looked at me anxiously, his eyes glistening, wanting to say something but unable to find the courage.
They were so alike, from their looks to their mannerisms, truly identical. I must have only contributed the belly, as I couldn’t find a single trait in George Wells that resembled
- me.

Daniel Wells stacked the gifts in a corner. “This time, I was careless. Next time-”
“Next time, don’t bother preparing these, I interrupted him. “And next time, don’t come.”
Daniel Wells turned his back to me, his body stiff, and after a long pause, he finally turned around. “I’m sorry. Can we talk privately?”
How rare, for those words to actually come out of his mouth.
I made the two kids a sweet drink, turned on the TV, and switched to the children’s channel before leading Daniel Wells to the gazebo in the yard.
“This place is beautiful, Daniel Wells said, his movements oddly tense.

“Thank you for the compliment, I asked him point blank.. “If you have something to say, just say it”
“I see you don’t have any other men around you, Daniel Wells said, his voice uncertain. “If you don’t mind, would you consider remarrying me?”
I stared at him, silent.
Daniel Wells awkwardly looked away, his gaze shifting uneasily. “I just think, it’s better for the kids to have a complete family.”
“George has changed a lot recently. He’s not as willful and spoiled as before. So-”
“Didn’t you marry Esme Bellamy?”
Daniel Wells froze.

“Back then, everyone told me she was the one who matched you, George Wells‘ mother.
“You never directly said it, but I assumed your agreed.
“So I made room for her.
“What’s the deal? Did you and she not end up together?”
Daniel Wells couldn’t hold my gaze any longer, his hands clenching and unclenching involuntarily. “That’s all in the past.”
“And so are we,” I replied coolly.
“But we have a child.”
“So what?” I laughed softly, my voice quiet. “Daniel Wells, stop using others as an
excuse.”

“First it was Esme Bellamy, now it’s George Wells.” I smiled, lowering my voice, “Is it really that hard to admit that you have feelings for me too?”
