Chapter 7 Extra Story 1
After Daniel Wells and Amara Vaughan divorced, the atmosphere in the Wells family remained heavy for a long time.
The woman, who had never been welcomed by anyone, had finally left, but the expected sense of relief never came.
Daniel Wells had always been a man of few words, and after the divorce, his silence deepened.
He was busy with work, either on business trips or on his way to one. Even when he was home, he often went straight to bed without saying a word.
George Wells, however, seemed unaffected by it all. He spent his days dragging the

nanny around, running here and there, crying and throwing tantrums whenever things didn’t go his way.
But one day, he suddenly asked,
“Where’s Mom?”
The nanny didn’t know how to answer.
George Wells, however, was persistent. He crawled under the table, searched through the closet, and combed through the garden, looking for a long time, but found nothing.
Huh? Where the hell is Mom hiding?
Children have short memories, but George Wells was sharp. He could still vividly recall the last time he saw Amara Vaughan.
That morning, before Amara Vaughan left,

she bent down with a smile and touched his head.
“George, Mommy has to go now.”
“I used to wish you were a good, obedient child, but now I realize you’re different from me. You have the luxury of being spoiled.”
“From now on, be happy and cheerful, okay?”
At the time, George Wells didn’t take those words to heart.
He was annoyed by Amara Vaughan’s lectures, resentful of her constant control over him.
But now, as he remembered those words, as he looked around the grand villa and realized there was no trace of Amara Vaughan in any

he finally began to feel a dull ache in his chest.
That evening, when Daniel Wells returned home, George Wells unexpectedly took the initiative to grab his hand.
“Dad, did you and Mom have a fight?”
Daniel Wells stopped in his tracks and looked down at him.
George Wells‘ young face was creased with concern. “Can you go apologize to Mom and make up? I haven’t seen her in so long.”
“I want to eat the sweet and sour ribs Mom makes. Can we have them tonight?”
Daniel Wells stared at the unquestioning look on George Wells‘ face. At first, his

expression was blank, but then a malicious smile slowly appeared.
“I didn’t fight with her. I divorced her.”
“Do you know what divorce means? Divorce means she doesn’t want you anymore.”
“She won’t see you again. No matter what you do, she won’t care about you anymore.”
“She abandoned you, understand?”
He seemed to relish the fear that flashed across George Wells‘ face, repeating coldly, “George Wells, she doesn’t want you. She’ll have other children, children who are more obedient, more lovable. You mean nothing to her anymore.”
“You’re lying! Mom would never leave me!” George Wells screamed. “You’re the one she

left! Mom said she loves me the most!”
“She lied to you!” Daniel Wells laughed, mocking. “George Wells, you’ve been tricked! She loves you the most? Ha, you actually believe that nonsense?”
“Daniel Wells, what are you telling the child?!” An elder from the Wells family rushed in, quickly pulling the emotionally devastated George Wells into his arms and soothing him softly. “George, stop crying. Your dad’s just playing with you.”
“I want Mom!”
“Mom’s been busy lately. She went back to her hometown. She’ll be back in a few days, okay?”
“No, no, no! I want to see her right now!” George Wells struggled desperately,

Daniel Wells couldn’t stand George Wells‘ spoiled behavior.
He coldly watched as George Wells cried and threw a tantrum, completely detached, as if he were an outsider, with no hint of emotion.
Even when George Wells cried until he was almost vomiting, Daniel Wells merely furrowed his brow and turned to walk upstairs.
The bedroom still looked exactly the same as it had before Amara Vaughan left.
Including the large wedding photo hanging on the wall.
Sometimes, Daniel Wells didn’t even understand what he was thinking.

Back when he had a fallout with Esme Bellamy, he blocked her, deleted their contact, and tossed the token of their relationship–all in one swift motion, eager to erase anything that reminded him of her from his life.
But when it came to his divorce with Amara Vaughan, he didn’t throw anything away.
As if throwing things away would mean admitting defeat.

He forced himself to remain emotionally composed, to prove that Amara Vaughan’s departure hadn’t affected him in the slightest.
He thought, after all, she was just a woman he didn’t love. Divorce, to him, was liberation.

Vaughan, Esme Bellamy asked him if he wanted to get married.
Daniel Wells paused for a moment, then said, “Forget it. Just a few days ago, George Wells was throwing a tantrum, insisting on seeing her. If I marry you, who knows how he’ll act.”
Esme Bellamy met his gaze, asking, “You’re not marrying me, is it really just because of George Wells?”
“What else would it be?”
Esme Bellamy smiled, a hint of sarcasm in her eyes. “Daniel Wells, sometimes I really admire you. After all, you even manage to deceive yourself.”
Daniel Wells didn’t understand. What exactly had he been deceiving himself about?
