When George Wells turned eighteen, Daniel Wells was still single.
But Amara Vaughan had remarried
She married a programmer–shy, quiet, but good to her.
Perhaps, out of love for her, he also paid attention to George Wells, her stepson.
On the wedding day, George Wells attended the ceremony.
When he came back, he casually mentioned to Daniel Wells at the dinner table that the
atmosphere at the wedding was lovely. There weren’t many guests, but it was lively.

Daniel Wells, upon hearing this, simply chewed his food in silence, too indifferent to even offer a glance.
This was the way father and son always got. along.
Between them, there was little familial warmth or conversation. It was like a typical wealthy family–polite, yet distant.
So, George Wells had no idea that, on the day of the wedding, Daniel Wells had attended as well.
Not only that, he had given a red packet.
Inside was a bank card.
Amara Vaughan had refused it.
“Keep it. I know you don’t need this, but it’s

just a small token from me.
“I don’t have anything else I can give you.”
Amara Vaughan shook her head. “You don’t have to give me anything.”
She wore a simple dress, nothing as grand as the one she wore at her wedding to Daniel Wells, but her smile was far more genuine.
Daniel Wells glanced at her once, then quickly turned his gaze away.
He feared that if he looked for even a moment longer, he would break down, helplessly shedding tears and begging her not to marry, not to abandon him.
The dressing room was silent until someone knocked on the door. “Is the bride ready? It’s time to go up.”

“I’m ready.” Amara Vaughan stood up and asked Daniel Wells, “George is outside. Should we have a meal together before we go?”
“No, it’s fine.” Daniel Wells shook his head and stood up, walking toward the door first.
Gripping the doorknob, he suddenly spoke. “By the way, there’s something I never told you.”

“Hmm?”
“I used to be jealous of George and your grandmother.”
Amara Vaughan stared at him, surprised. “What did you say?”

much, but I always felt that, in your heart, your grandmother was more important than me,” Daniel Wells said, his voice calm and steady. “That’s why I was never really happy.”
“When George was born, no matter what you and I were doing, as soon as he cried, I was no longer in your eyes,” Daniel Wells continued. “So, I’ve always hated George Wells.”
“Maybe, subconsciously, I just wanted all your attention for myself,” he said, a self–deprecating laugh escaping. “But I guess I wasn’t that lucky.”
And so, in the end, he lost even what he had once held.
“Also, I didn’t lose control because of alcohol. That night, I was completely sober.” Daniel Wells finally turned around to face

“You know, I’m not a good person. Seeing your happiness without me… Honestly, it makes me want to sabotage it.”
From the moment the programmer entered Amara Vaughan’s life, Daniel Wells had known it.
The desire to destroy, buried deep inside, burst free in an instant. Like a grotesque. creature lurking in the shadows, he plotted to ruin Amara Vaughan’s second chance at happiness.

Yes, he was.
But no matter how sad or regretful he felt, this life… he and Amara Vaughan, it could only end here.

country bumpkin from the countryside, and he had been quite unwilling. Just a second before meeting Amara Vaughan, he had been complaining on his phone with a friend.
But then he looked up, and the moment he saw her, it was as if his breath stopped.
She was like a cool breeze, sweeping away all the summer heat, leaving only the chirping of cicadas and the soft rays of sunlight through the treetops.
The fluttering in his chest was instantaneous.
He did many things he couldn’t even understand himself. In every quiet moment of life, his gaze would unknowingly linger on her.
When he snapped back to reality, they were

He watched helplessly as the sunlight on her slowly faded, shadows growing deeper.
Back then, he truly believed she would stay with him forever.
In a foggy haze, Daniel Wells seemed to dream.
In the dream, he was back on their wedding day. The officiant held the microphone and asked him: ” Daniel Wells, do you take Amara Vaughan as your wife, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer?”
He heard his own response:
“I do.”
The End.
