Chapter 2
Early the next morning, I packed my things and returned to the home I shared with Dylan Watson.
When he walked out of the bedroom, I was sitting on the couch in the living room.
“End it with her.”
I didn’t look at him. My voice was quiet.
“What?”
“I said, if you cut all ties with Lily Hall, I won’t hold anything against you.”
I took a deep breath, resting a hand on my abdomen.

However, Dylan let out an irritated sigh, yanking at his tie.
“Claire King, how did I never realize you could become so unreasonable?”
“Lily is just an ordinary patient of mine. I see so many people every day–are you going to get jealous and interfere with every single one of them?”
A bitter chuckle rose in my throat.
“Just an ordinary patient? You’re really dedicated to your job, aren’t you? Rushing over at midnight to fix her light bulb, buying her gifts for Valentine’s Day, preparing
a candlelit dinner for your so–called ‘one–month anniversary‘ with her.”
I stood up and met his gaze, enunciating every word.

“I’m being unreasonable? Fine. Then today, I’ll be unreasonable.”
“Choose–me, or Lily Hall.”
Dylan frowned, clearly not expecting me to say that.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
I glanced down.
Lily.
The call connected, and her teary voice filled the room.
“Doctor Watson, I slipped in the bathroom… can you come check on me?”
Dylan barely hesitated before turning to

leave.
I bit my lip, holding back my tears as I grabbed his hand.
“If you walk out that door, we’re getting a divorce.”
His brows furrowed deeper.
“Since when did you start using divorce as a threat? Stop being so childish.”
“I told you–Lily is a patient. She has depression. Her emotions are unstable. Are you seriously jealous of someone who needs professional help?”
“You throw around the word ‘divorce‘ so easily. Maybe you should take some time at home to reflect on yourself.”

With that, he pulled my hand away and
strode out.
The door slammed shut behind him.
And despite myself, the tears I had been holding in finally fell.
That night, Dylan Watson returned home late.
By the time the door creaked open, I had already dozed off on the sofa.
He hesitated for a moment upon seeing me, then finally spoke after some deliberation.
“I met with a few partners today to discuss investing in a psychology clinic. That’s why I got back so late.”
I understood–this casual remark was his

way of backing down.
From the moment we met, through dating and marriage, I had never once threatened to break up or divorce him. Tonight was the first time.
Dylan had always been proud. Even when he was in the wrong, he would never straightforwardly admit it or offer an apology.
For many years, he relied on the fact that I was soft–hearted, that I would always be the first to give in, to smooth things over.
But this time, I said nothing and ignored him. I simply stood up and walked toward the bedroom in silence.
Halfway there, a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen. I doubled over, clutching

my stomach, my expression twisted in discomfort.
Dylan rushed to my side, steadying me, his face tight with concern.
“Claire, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Tomorrow, I’ll go with you to the hospital for a check–up. It’s a good chance for us to take care of our health together and prepare for pregnancy.”
“You have no idea how much I want a child.
of our own.”
I almost laughed. A child? To grow up watching their father constantly running to someone else’s side?
I wanted to push him away, but then I

remembered–I hadn’t even had a proper prenatal check–up since learning I was pregnant.
So instead, I nodded.
I had no idea how to tell him about the baby. Maybe it would be easier to let the doctor do it for me.
I pulled free from his grasp and walked into the bedroom alone.
By the time I woke up the next morning, Dylan was already gone.
I checked my phone and saw that he’d left
me a message:
“I have an early meeting with a client. Let’s meet at the hospital lobby at 10:30.”

Seeing that I had plenty of time,l got up and had a breakfast before shuffling out the door..
When I arrived at the hospital, I waited in the lobby for nearly an hour.
Dylan never showed.
I called him over and over, but every time, the call went unanswered.
Eventually, I gave up with a sigh, got up, and went to check in for my appointment alone.
An hour later, I stepped into the elevator with my medical report in hand when a bright, familiar voice called out-
“Claire?”
I turned around at the sound and realized

it was none other than Dylan Watson’s supposed patient, Lily Hall.
Her expression was all wide–eyed innocence, but her smile was too bright, too knowing.
“Are you here alone? Are you feeling unwell?” she asked sweetly.
“Doctor Watson is just ridiculously considerate,” she continued with a laugh. “I only mentioned that I had cramps and needed some painkillers, and he rushed me to the hospital. Said he’d even go home to make me chicken soup himself.”
She tilted her head, feigning concern.
“If I’d known you weren’t feeling well, I would’ve let him stay with you instead.”
I stared at her coldly, my chest tightening as

she smiled at me, her eyes glinting with quiet triumph.
Seeing that I didn’t say anything, she let out an exaggerated sigh.
“But I suppose Doctor Watson cares about me more. Even if he knew you were sick, he’d still come to me first.”
She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a teasing lilt.
“Don’t you think so, Claire?”
