I received a call from Summer Ryan just before I was about to leave work.
He told me he was taking Margot on a business trip and asked me to pick up Margot’s daughter, Zoe, from school and look after her for a couple of days. Before I could decline, he hung up the phone.
I rushed to the kindergarten to pick up Zoe. She told me she wanted a beef burger. As a teacher, I’m well aware of food allergies, so I texted Margot to check if Zoe could have the beef burger.

certain she could eat it and threw a fit when I hesitated.
I thought, “She’s five. She should know what she can and can’t eat,” so I gave in and bought her one.
And then things went wrong.
Summer and Margot returned, rushing to the hospital. He looked at me with a frustrated expression.
When he heard Zoe crying, he snapped at me, “How could you take care of a child like this? In just a moment, you got her to the hospital!”
“I didn’t mean to,” I mumbled in response.
But Zoe yelled at me, “Uncle, she didn’t make me food! She let me eat the beef burger!”

I stared at her in disbelief. “But you said you wanted it..”
Margot, her eyes red, interrupted me. “Nicole, if you didn’t want to help, you should’ve just said so. Don’t hurt the child. Zoe is so young -what if she ends up with complications?”
She started crying.
“If you care so much about your daughter, why leave her with someone else?” I couldn’t help but snap back. It was their decision to dump her on me without consulting.

child,” Margot bit her lip. “Not like you, Nicole, who has someone to take care of you.”
“What does your bad luck have to do with

“Have you finished?” Summer suddenly slapped me across the face, his anger flaring, “You talk like you are just a bystander hero. Margot trusted you with Zoe, and look what happened. You’re a teacher, but who would trust a child to you with someone like you? You’re ruining lives.”
I looked at Summer, shocked that he would actually raise a hand to me.
“Nicole, don’t worry, I won’t trouble you again,” Margot cried, holding Zoe close.
Zoe, still sobbing, pointed at me and shouted, “You’re a bad person, you’re a bad person…
Summer scowled, clearly annoyed. “Don’t waste your breath. Let’s go see the doctor.”

He walked off, protecting Margot and Zoe.
I stood there, watching their backs, suddenly feeling absurdly foolish.
And then, with a sigh, I responded to an email offering me the job at Oxford.
I accepted. Ten days from now, I would leave.
Last night, Summer left me at the hospital, and I realized I had nowhere else to go. So, I went to the school.
This town was Summer’s hometown. I had
moved here for him.
I studied education and, with my background from a prestigious school, I had easily
landed a job at the local school.
