Chapter 4
On Summer’s birthday, I woke up early as usual to make him a birthday cake, only to find Margot already in the kitchen preparing it.
“Nicole, do you need the kitchen? I’m almost done, just wait a bit,” Margot said, smugly.
I turned and went back to my room, deciding to manage my personal file today.
When I finished packing and was about to head out, I was stopped by Margot, who was having breakfast with Summer.
“Nicole, you’re going out? Aren’t you going to spend Summer’s birthday with him?” she asked.

Zoe chimed in, “Uncle wants to go to the amusement park”
“That’s what you want,” Margot teased.
Zoe laughed sheepishly and then turned to Summer, clinging to him with a pout. “Uncle, can we go to the amusement park?”
“Alright, we’ll go to the amusement park” Summer said, picking Zoe up.
“Nicole, why don’t you come with us?” Margot invited,
“No thanks, you go ahead. I have something to do.”
“But it’s his birthday. What’s more important than spending it with Summer?” Margot glanced between me and Summer.

Summer’s expression darkened. “Are you doing this on purpose? Margot’s been asking you for so long, and you won’t even give her this little courtesy. If you’re not going to the amusement park, then you’re not leaving this house.”
In the end, Summer dragged me into the car.
“Mom, why are we sitting in the back? You always sat next to Uncle before,” Zoe asked curiously from the back seat.
Summer glanced at me with an awkward expression.
I remained silent, staring out the window.
“Mom, I want that flower, Zoe said, climbing across the seat and pointing at a hanging ornament on the dashboard.

It was the flower I had given Summer.
“Zoe, don’t be difficult, it’s dangerous.”
“I want it!” Zoe insisted.
Summer, distracted, swerved the car, and the rear car horn blared. With a loud crash, my head slammed into the dashboard.
By the time I regained my senses, the car had veered off into the median, and I was pinned in my seat, unable to move.
The air was filled with the shrill alarm, Zoe’s crying, and Summer’s reassurances.
“Don’t be scared. I’ll get you out of here,” he said.
I glanced at Summer, who had already gotten out of the car. I exhaled in relief.

Then, he pried open the back door and carried Margot and Zoe out.
“Summer, save me, I reached out to him.
Margot grabbed him. “Summer, we’re so scared!”
Summer looked at them, then glanced at me, his teeth gritted.
“Nicole, wait here. I’ll get them to safety and come back for you.”
I watched, helpless, as he carried Margot and Zoe away, never once looking back.
“Fire!” someone yelled.
I turned my head to see flames emerging from the back of the car.

I stopped hoping for Summer’s rescue and focused on saving myself.
I struggled with the seatbelt, but it wouldn’t budge. I slid down and managed to free myself.
The driver’s seat was already billowing smoke. I opened the window, enduring the heat, and crawled into the median.
A passerby saw me and rushed over, dragging me to the other side of the street.
In less than three minutes, the entire car was engulfed in flames.
I survived, by some miracle.
