Chapter 5
I groggily felt something holding my hand.
I opened my eyes to see Summer sitting beside my bed.
“You’re awake. Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?” he asked, his face full of
guilt.
I remembered the car crash from yesterday -how he’d left me behind. I pulled my hand
away.
Summer’s face stiffened. “Nicole.”
I turned my head away from him.
Summer sat down on the bed and placed his hand on my shoulder, forcing me to look at

him. “Are you angry?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to leave you.”
I was about to push him away, but he hugged me tightly instead.
“You didn’t come back” I said quietly.
After I was rescued, it took ten minutes for the ambulance to arrive, but Summer never came back.
Summer’s body tensed. He spoke slowly. “I wanted to save Margot and Zoe first, then come back for you. But they were so scared. Zoe kept crying. I couldn’t just leave them. When I went back for you, you had already. been taken to the hospital.”
“You couldn’t leave them, so you left me to die.”

“I didn’t, Summer loosened his grip and looked me in the eyes. “I didn’t know this would happen.”
I nodded quietly, pushing him away.
“I didn’t abandon you,” Summer jumped up. “I really came back.”
I nodded again.
“This is my fault. If you’re angry, I understand.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Why should I be angry? It’s your choice who you want to save. I couldn’t stop you.”
Summer fell silent.
“Really not angry?” Summer stared at me,

frowning.
I smiled softly. “It’s my luck I survived. Otherwise, I would have been burned alive. Everything else doesn’t matter anymore.”
Here is the improved version of the text:
Summer’s face went paie as he fled in a hurry. “I’ll go find a doctor.”
Summer stayed by my side the entire time.
The next day, Summer brought over a bridal catalog.
“Nicole, take a look and see if there’s a style you like.”
I glanced at him, and Summer raised a corner of his mouth. “Let’s get married.”

If it had been a week ago, I might have hesitated, but now, I didn’t even think twice.
“Do you like this one?” Summer eagerly turned the pages, “Oh, never mind, this one’s off–shoulder. I don’t want too many people seeing you.”
Summer talked to himself.
“Your phone’s ringing.” I glanced at his pocket.
The vibration was so intense that the entire bed shook.
“It’s nothing.” Summer hesitated but didn’t take out his phone.
“Margot and Zoe are trying to reach you. What if it’s something urgent?” I sneered.

“No need.” Summer said, swiping the phone to silence it. “Let’s focus on picking the wedding dress.”
No sooner had he spoken than his phone rang again.
Summer ignored it.
It wasn’t until the fifth ring that he finally seemed to care.
“Maybe they really do need me.” Summer hesitated, looking at me.
“Why does it concern me? Do whatever you want. You don’t need my permission,” I said without looking up.
“I’ll just check to see what it is.” Summer finally answered.
