Chapter 6
On the other end of the line, Margot’s voice was frantic. “Summer, Zoe’s been crying nonstop after a nightmare and she has a fever. I don’t know what to do.”
Summer sprang to his feet. “Fever? Has she been to the hospital?”
“No, she refuses to go. I can’t carry her by myself.” Margot’s voice cracked with tears.
“Wait for me, I’ll be right there.”
Summer hung up the phone, looking down at me with a conflicted expression. “I-”
“I’ll take Zoe to the hospital and come back soon.” Summer reached for me, but I stepped
away.

“Wait for me,” Summer rushed out of the
room.
I tossed the bridal catalog into the trash.
That night, Summer didn’t return, and I didn’t
care.
The third day, I discharged myself from the hospital.
When I opened the door, Summer, who had been pouring water, startled and spilled it all over himself.
“Why did you discharge yourself?” He didn’t even bother to wipe the water off, rushing over to grab my hand.
“Well, since I didn’t die, there’s no need to waste medical resources,” I said, bending

down to change my shoes and avoiding his hand.
Summer’s face turned pale. He knelt down to hand me my slippers, trying to change the subject.
“It’s not a waste. Did the doctor say you could leave? Let me help you.”
“No thanks,” I said, taking my slippers and putting them on.
Summer furrowed his brow. “Why so formal?”
“I’m going to rest,” I said, not explaining further. As I was to go to my room, Summer grabbed my arm.
He pressed something into my palm.
“Happy birthday.”

I opened it to find a small rubber duck keychain.
“Your gift for successfully being discharged, Summer smiled gently at me.
“Thank you,” I said after a long pause.
“You haven’t had breakfast yet, have you? I’ll go get something for you, Summer said, hastily grabbing the wilted bouquet from the balcony and rushing out.
“This belongs to my mom.”
I turned to see Zoe hiding behind the door, grinning mischievously. I could feel the malice in her smile.
“It was the prize uncle won at the
amusement park yesterday. He gave it to my

mom, but she didn’t want it, so uncle gave it to you,” Zoe said, glaring at me. “Uncle likes my mom and me. He doesn’t like you. You’re a bad woman.””
stepped closer to her.
Zoe clutched her smartwatch proudly. “I have uncle’s number. If you hit me, I’ll tell him.”
I raised my hand, and the keychain slipped from my fingers.
“If
your mom wants it, let her have it. I don’t
want this junk”
Zoe stared blankly at me.
“Do you still remember who your father is?” I glanced toward the partially open master bedroom door and walked back to my room.

Summer wasn’t like this when we were in love.
When I had a fever while attending a competition in another city, Summer drove ten hours straight to take care of me.
When I was on an IV drip, he was worried the fluid would be too coid, so he’d hold the bottle close to his chest to warm it.
That all changed since Margot’s husband was sent abroad for work. He could’t come back for several years, so he aksed Summer to help looking after Margot and Zoe.
