Chapter 4
The next morning, I got out of bed and began packing my belongings, placing them one by one into my suitcase.
Then, without hesitation, I headed to the law firm, requested a divorce agreement, and made my way straight to Dylan Watson’s office.
The moment I stepped into the lobby, the receptionist froze at the sight of me.
We had seen each other many times before.
The last time was just last year when I had returned to surprise Dylan Watson for his birthday, asking for her help to set everything
- up.

Back then, her eyes had sparkled with excitement as she told me,
“Claire, I hope I can have a love as sweet as yours and Doctor Watson’s someday.”
Recalling those words, I couldn’t help but let out a bitter smile. I forced a polite greeting and made my way toward the elevator.
Before I could step inside, she hurriedly called after me.
“C… Claire, the elevator is out of order. Why don’t you wait for Doctor Watson downstairs?”
“It’s fine. I’ll take the stairs.“brary
“Doctor Watson he… he’s not here. Maybe you should go home and wait? I can call you when he gets back.”

Noticing the nervous look on her face, I already had an idea of what was going on.
With a faint smile, I shook my head and climbed the stairs.
Sure enough, when I pushed open the office door, I found exactly what I had expected- Lily Hall, seated at his desk, casually eating her meal.
In the past, whenever I brought Dylan Watson food, he would make me wait at the café downstairs, saying that the office wasn’t a suitable place for meals since patients often dropped by.
Each time, he would hurriedly finish his food, barely saying a few words to me, or just wait for me to finish eating before rushing off.

And now, Lily Hall sat there openly, as if she belonged.
How ironic.
“Oh, Claire, you’re here! Why don’t you join us?”
“You probably don’t get to eat Doctor Watson’s cooking often, do you? Sit down and try some. I have it so much that I’m starting to get tired of it.”
She remained in Dylan’s chair, chin lifted, her gaze laced with disdain as she smiled at me.
I had no interest in arguing with her. Without a word, I turned to leave.
Just as I reached the staircase, Lily Hall caught up to me.

“If I were you, I’d have the decency to walk away on my own,” she sneered. “How shameless can you be, clinging to a man who doesn’t even love you?”
I turned to her, my voice calm but cutting.
“If he truly loved you, he wouldn’t keep stalling the divorce, leaving you as the despised, nameless mistress.”
Her smile faltered.
“You think he cares about you?” she scoffed. “I only know that a man’s heart belongs to the one he cherishes most.”
“Last time you went to the hospital for a prenatal checkup, didn’t you? Too bad every time I feigned a depressive episode or said I wasn’t feeling well, Doctor Watson would drop everything and run to me–including

you.”
“Men are so easy to fool. A little fragility, a coy gesture, and they’re wrapped around your finger. So what if you’re his wife? He still gives all his love to me.”
“The one who isn’t loved is the real mistress. I’d suggest you step aside and let me take my rightful place.”
As she finished speaking, a wicked smile curved her lips.
Then, suddenly, she grabbed my wrist and yanked me hard toward the stairs.
“Help!”
She screamed for help, her voice echoing through the corridor.

In that brief moment before we both tumbled down the steps, I caught sight of Dylan Watson rounding the corner, running toward
- US.
I squeezed my eyes shut, but the helping hand I had imagined never came.
I tumbled helplessly to the bottom of the stairs, the sharp, cramping pain in my abdomen flooding my body with cold sweat.
Gritting my teeth, I forced my eyes open, only to see Dylan Watson holding Lily Hall in his arms, frantically comforting the trembling woman in his embrace.
“Save the baby… please save the baby…”
I mustered all the strength I had, but my voice barely reached above a whisper.

Dylan Watson, just about to rush down the stairs to check on me, froze as Lily Hall suddenly collapsed into his arms, crying out.
With a look of panic, he called her name, but when she didn’t respond, he quickly scooped her up and rushed down the stairs.
“Claire, you’re not seriously injured. I’ll have my colleague call 911 and take you to the hospital.”
“Lily can’t handle any more stress, you know that. She’s passed out! I need to get her to the ER quickly!”
Ignoring my faint cries for help, he left without a second glance, carrying Lily out of sight.
As I felt wave after wave of blood rushing from my body, I closed my eyes in despair.

At the hospital, after surgery, I was wheeled into a ward–but Dylan Watson still hadn’t shown up.
The nurse, thinking I was still unconscious, murmured quietly.
“How pitiful this patient is. She called her husband countless times, but no one answered. She even signed the consent form on her own before the surgery, barely holding herself up.”
“Yeah, she’s been here for over three hours, and her husband still hasn’t shown up… what a shame.”
“Before she passed out, she begged the doctor to save the baby. It’s such a pity. She came too late. The baby… couldn’t be saved. If only she had come a few minutes earlier,

there might have been hope.”
Once the door was shut, I could no longer hold back the pain inside. I broke down, tears flooding from my eyes.
The agony in my chest was like a knife. twisting deeper and deeper, and the sorrow and resentment overwhelmed me like a tidal wave, suffocating me.
In my despair, I didn’t know how long I cried alone, until darkness fell and Dylan Watson finally pushed the door open.
“Claire, you’re alright, aren’t you?”
“Lily said she’s hungry. I was just about to go get her some food. Is there anything you’d like while I’m out?”
“In your heart, does she matter more than me

Dylan Watson’s pupils trembled, and he stood frozen in place.
