Chapter 8
“I–I didn’t mean to.” Summer fumbled, hands outstretched, trying to touch me.
But he froze, immobilized by the calmness in my eyes.
I raised my hand and slapped him back.
“How can you hit him?” Margot rushed over to hold Summer, shouting at me. “Nicole, you’re too much. You broke Summer’s precious flower pot, wasted his effort, and now you’re hitting him!”
The flower pot?
I glanced toward the balcony and saw the wreckage.

The flower pot Summer had so carefully tended lay shattered all over the floor.
I was allergic to pollen, but I loved flowers, especially irises.
Summer had promised to grow an iris that wouldn’t trigger my allergies.
I had even helped him record data for it.
Now it was all gone.
Margot said I broke it, which was laughable. I hadn’t been home all day.
But it didn’t matter. Summer wouldn’t believe
me anyway.
“Summer, let’s break up,” I said flatly.
He stared at me, shocked. “Because of a

slap?”
“If you think so.
I was supposed to leave after three days anyway. It’s not bad to leave earlier.
I removed the ring from my ring finger and placed it on the table, then turned to pack my bags.
Fortunately, I had already packed earlier, so I didn’t waste time.
Summer gripped the suitcase tightly, refusing to let go. “You’ve already packed. Did you plan to break up with me all along?”
“Does it matter? If you truly cared about me, how could you not notice the suitcase in the room?”

“Fine,” Summer bit out, his teeth gritted in fury. “Don’t regret it. A troublesome woman like you will never find anyone else who’ll put up with you.”
A lump of cotton seemed to clog my chest, making it hard to breathe.
breathe.
I thought I was ready for this, but when it actually came to this point, it still hurt.
I hadn’t picked up my files, so I stayed at a hotel temporarily.
It occured to me that I had forgotten to return the jewelry Summer’s parents had given me, and the house key was still in my hand.
So, I went back to Summer’s place.
I texted him before I set out, but there was

no reply.
Before entering, I switched on the video recorder, just in case someone tried to slander me again.
I opened the door of the guest room, and there they were–two naked bodies tangled together, right in front of the camera.
“Ah!” Margot hurriedly grabbed a bedsheet to cover herself and rolled off the bed, trying to hide under it.
Summer, seemingly just waking up, rubbed his forehead and sat up. When he saw me, he froze for a moment.
“Nicole, you’re back.” His face reflexively broke into a smile, but it quickly faltered. He looked down at himself, stiffened, and turned to see Margot in the corner of the bed. “What

the hell are you doing in my bed?”
Margot didn’t speak. She just shook her head and sobbed.
“Nicole, it’s not what you think. I was drunk, and nothing happened between us,” Summer said, rushing over barefoot.
I stepped back, avoiding him.
“You don’t need to explain. We’ve broken up. Who you’re with doesn’t concern me anymore.”
I glanced at the bracelet on Margot’s wrist and said, “I’m here to pick up the gifts your parents gave me and return to them. But it’s not necessary anymore. And this is your house key.”
I placed the key on the table next to me and

turned to leave.
“You can’t just leave. She’s got video!” Margot suddenly screamed, charging at me to grab my phone.
“What? Trying to rob me now?” I dodged her hands.
Margot stomped her foot and yelled at Summer, “Are you an idiot? If she posts that video, we’re both finished!”
Only then did Summer move toward me.
“Since you’ve already done it, what’s there to hide?”
He grabbed my hand, and Margot, with a murderous glare, yanked at my hair.
