Chapter 2
My past with Daniel Wells was truly unremarkable, not worth mentioning.
When my grandmother was younger, she had helped the Wells family, allegedly saving Daniel Wells‘ grandmother when she was kidnapped. Because of this, over the years, the Wells family would always send gifts during the holidays.
When I got into university, my grandmother was getting older and didn’t want to travel. She also worried that I would struggle to adapt to the fast–paced life of the big city on my own.
So, she reached out to the Wells family, asking them to look after me.

That year, I stepped off the train carrying large and small bags of luggage and immediately spotted Daniel Wells leaning against his car, casually looking down at his phone.
He was truly captivating, so dazzling that I wanted to gather all the beautiful words I had learned and pile them onto him.
It was entirely natural for me to be drawn to him.
I knew we were from two different worlds, and I never considered anything more.
The moon hung high in the sky, and as I walked under its light, I was content.
I attended the same university as Daniel Wells, and occasionally, he would bring things for me at the request of his elders.

In my junior year, I started an internship. De company was far from the university, so I had to commute for a long time every day.
One day, I bumped into Daniel Wells and he casually mentioned how things were going with me. I truthfully replied him.
Before long, I received a call from Daniel

Wells‘ grandmother. She said they had a spare room in their house, very close to my company, and suggested I move in.
It would have been rude to refuse the elderly woman’s kindness, so I was grateful.
After moving in, I discovered that every corner of the house had traces of Daniel Wells‘ life. I felt guilty about my own intentions, so I made sure all of my belongings stayed in the guest room, trying to minimize my presence.
Until that one night, when I came home late after working overtime and found a drunk Daniel Wells slumped on the sofa.
I wanted to avoid any awkwardness, but I was also concerned he might catch a cold, so I grabbed an air–conditioning blanket to cover him.

Daniel Wells opened his eyes and looked at
- me.
I thought he was going to question why I was in his house.
But instead, he pinned me down, and what followed was a grave mistake.
Now, I could hardly remember the chaos of that night.
The human body has a self–preservation mechanism; sometimes, when the pain becomes too much, it gradually fades from
memory.
In all my life up to this point, I’ve only shared such a moment with one person.
His mouth called out another name.

Upon reflection, it seemed that until now, Daniel Wells had only ever called me by my
name once.
The day we first met, at the train station, he gave me a once–over and asked, “Amara Vaughan?”
“I am.”
If life were but as it first appeared, how could we bear the sorrow of autumn winds and the falling of painted fans?
After school, the campus was eerily quiet.
Daniel Wells and I stood at the end of the hallway, with the vibrant green behind us.
“Aren’t you the one who wanted to talk to me alone?” Daniel Wells asked. “If you have

something to say, just say it.”
Since he had spoken first, I had no reason to hesitate.
“What have you been telling George Wells all these years?”
“What?”
“We’ve been divorced for four years.”
“For the past four years, I’ve kept my promise and stayed away. I’ve also been sending child support to your account every month, like clockwork.
“Children’s memories are fleeting, and
besides, George never liked me as his birth mother.

could never remember me, let alone hold any feelings for me.”
Daniel Wells turned his head, avoiding my gaze. “I haven’t said anything to him. It’s his grandmother who keeps reminding him.”
“Then why the transfer?”
“He’s been insisting on finding you.” Daniel Wells paused for a moment. “I couldn’t stop him.”
Indeed, George Wells was the apple of the Wells family’s eye. If he wanted something, he would get it.
Even Daniel Wells, in front of George, had no principles.
I lowered my eyes and thought quietly.

After a long silence, I smiled. “It’s fine. Once his expectations are shattered, he’ll naturally want to return.”
I’ve never been a likable person.
As George Wells spends more time with me, he’ll eventually realize that it was his memory that kept painting me in a better light.
The truth is, I am still the same unlikable, annoying woman, his birth mother, who only diminishes his status and reputation.
