Chapter2
Without waiting for their reaction, I stood up and walked away.
“Dr. Miller! Are hospital rules more important than your son’s life?!”
“If you refuse, there’s no one left who can save him!”
The lead surgeon’s voice rang out behind me, desperate.
I didn’t stop.
As I reached the hospital entrance, my in–laws and Jacob ran after me.
Margaret suddenly dropped to her knees.

“Emily, I beg you! If you leave now, Ethan is as good as dead!”
Her sudden action drew the attention of the surrounding crowd.
“Wait, isn’t that Dr. Miller, the famous surgeon? What’s going on?”
“I heard her son got stabbed saving her, but now she refuses to save him!”
“Unbelievable! She always seemed so dedicated to her patients, but she’s heartless toward her own son?”
“Maybe she was just putting on an act before. If she doesn’t care about her own child, how could she possibly care about strangers?”
“Even wild animals protect their young!

Her son nearly died for her, and she’s just walking away?!”
The crowd erupted in outrage, their voices full of contempt.
Even former patients who had once respected me now looked at me with disgust.
George wiped his tears, his voice pleading.
“Emily, I don’t believe you’re this heartless.”
“When you gave birth to Ethan, you almost died from complications. But you kept telling the doctors–‘Save the baby, not me.”
“You said he was more important than your own life.”
“You risked everything to bring him into this

world–there’s no way you’d let him die now. Right?”
His wrinkled face was streaked with tears, his eyes full of desperate hope.
But I remained unmoved.
Jacob, his voice rising in frustration, shouted:
“Emily! The person in that operating room is your own son! The son who protected you with his life!”
“Are you really this heartless?!”
I looked at them, my expression serious and resolute.
“I really can’t do anything.”

I rejected them again, my words firm and unwavering.
In an instant, the hope in Jacob’s eyes- and in my in–laws‘ eyes–was completely shattered.
The onlookers‘ emotions exploded.
One by one, they hurled the most vicious curses and insults at me.
Some even pulled out their phones, recording videos and starting live streams, broadcasting my so–called “cruelty” to the entire internet.
Before long, every major live–streaming platform was filled with outrage against me.
Whether or not I was willing to save my son became the hottest topic across the web.

“She would’ve saved him long ago if she actually cared! Why would she wait until now?”
“Exactly! Just look at that cold, indifferent face–she’s clearly heartless!”
“I can’t believe it. If I hadn’t seen the live stream, I wouldn’t have imagined a mother like this could actually exist.”
“Her son is dying because of her, and she’s just standing there like nothing’s wrong. Disgusting!”
The entire internet was consumed with
hatred toward me.
The enraged crowd took it further–hurling fruit peels and scraps of paper at me.

Before I could finish speaking, Jacob snapped.
His hand swung across my face with full force, a sharp crack echoing through the air.
“So your so–called career is more important than your own son’s life?!”
“Emily, I won’t just stand by and watch Ethan die in that operating room.”
“Today, you will save him!”
“If anything happens to Ethan, I’ll make sure you go down with him!”
With that, Jacob grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the hospital’s operating
room.
My in–laws followed closely behind.
