Sarah’s car sputtered to life after what felt like an eternity of cranking the engine. The thing felt like it was held together by willpower and occasional prayer. Maybe I should have taken up the men’s offers to drive us home.
Still, it was running, so I guess that was better than nothing.
As we pulled out of the parking lot, Sarah let out an exaggerated squeal, gripping the steering wheel like she was on a rollercoaster. “This is better than any romance book I’ve ever read,” she said, vibrating in her seat. “Like, what the fuck? Two ridiculously handsome men fighting over you? This is the kind of drama I live for.”
I rolled my eyes, slumping in my seat. “They’re not fighting over me, Sarah.”
She shot me a look, her eyebrows raised quite high. “Keep telling yourself that.”

Sarah didn’t respond right away, so I thought she’d let it go But then she asked the question I’d been dreading. ” When the time comes, who will you choose?”
I blinked, turning to face her. “What?”
She shrugged, keeping her eyes on the road. “Eventually, you’ll have to choose. Unless you want to be poly, of course.”
“No,” I quickly said. Not that I had anything against poly relationships. It just wasn’t for me!

I pursed my lips.
The truth was, I didn’t have an answer. In fact, I haven’t even thought that far.

And then there was Heath–mysterious, charming, and always there when I needed him, but with a past he kept tightly under wraps. How was I supposed to choose between them?
Sarah glanced at me, her expression softening. “You don’t have to figure it out right now, Julia. Just keep making it fun, okay? I honestly want to see them fight for you even more fiercely.”
I shook my head, but I couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at my lips. “You’re impossible, you know that?”
She grinned. “That’s why you love me.”
With that, we continued the journey in silence, only the sound of the radio serving as our noise.
However, the silence was broken when Sarah asked a question that caught me completely off guard.

“Where are you going?” my dad asked.

He stopped reading his paper and turned to me with furrowed brows.
“For a long time, I didn’t want to build a family of my own because I was afraid of turning into you.
“Evander,” he said in a warning tone–the kind that wanted to change the subject or finish the conversation.
I didn’t let him this time.
“I don’t know what you have planned for me, Dad. But I’m starting to see why Ellie went away.”
His expression softened, so I knew I hit the spot. My dad had always been soft against Ellie, and when he threatened to take away all she had ever known, he was fully expecting her not to go against him again.
However, Ellie actually left the family, and he could do nothing about it.
“Evander, do not bring your preposterous sister into this,” he scoffed.
“If this goes on, I might just do the same,” I muttered, but knew he still heard it.
He stood from his seat, his face red from frustration. “Evander, take back those words.”
“I taught you everything you know. The moment you leave this house, you will not have anything of mine anymore. And trust me, I’m not going to be as lenient to you as I was with Ellie.”
“I know,” I said, shaking my head in slight amusement. I knew from the very beginning. That was why I was hesitant to go against him in the first place.
