Chapter 97: Evan’s in Trouble (2)
JULIA
Evan couldn’t win anything. Not a single game. I was sure he had spent more than a hundred dollars on the tokens, too.
He even wanted to use his black card, which I had to remind wasn’t accepted in these kinds of things.
Heath, on the other hand, had already won another plushie this time, a bright blue dolphin that Andy was now clutching like a prized possession.
1 shook my head, watching as Evan stared at the ring toss both with a look of pure frustration. He was great at everything–business, strategy, working out, even cooking, for crying out loud.
So, seeing him fail so spectacularly at something so simple was quite endearing.
“Come on. Let’s go,” I said, tugging gently on his arm. However, Evan stubbornly shook his head. He planted his feet and focused on the game before him.
“Evan,” I warned, raising an eyebrow. “You’re not going to win. Just let it go.”

He pursed his lips, his eyes still locked on the booth. “I can’t get one for Andy,” he muttered to himself,

I sighed, shaking my head. “You don’t have to win him a toy to make him happy. Just buy him some food or something.”
Evan hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. He marched over to the nearest food stand and proceeded to order what could only be described as a feast. Hot dogs, nachos, cotton candy, popcorn, and a giant pretzel that was almost as big as Andy himself.
It was too much, but when Evan handed it all to Andy, the boy’s eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning
I couldn’t help but smile. “What would you say, bub?”
“Thank you, Da–Mister,” he said, quickly retracting his words.
Evan smiled. However, there was a hint of sadness in his eyes when Andy hadn’t called him by his real title.
I clicked my tongue, giving him a pointed look. “You know he can’t eat all of that, right?”
Evan shrugged, a small smile tugging at his lips. “He can share it with the other kids.”
I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help the warmth that spread through my chest.
Evan was trying. He was really, truly trying. And for someone who was usually so composed and in control, seeing him fumble like this was oddly charming.
As Andy happily shared his snacks with a group of kids nearby, Evan watched with quiet satisfaction. His hands were shoved into his pockets, and his shoulders relaxed for the first time all day. I stepped closer to him, bumping his arm lightly. “Are you happy now?”
He nodded, his gaze still fixed on Andy. “Yeah. I am.”
I smiled, shaking my head. “You’re such a softie.”
Evan glanced at me, his lips curving into a smirk. “Don’t tell anyone.”
Before I could respond, Andy came running back, his face red with excitement. “Can we go on the rides now?

Please?”
Evan froze, his smirk fading instantly. I bit back a laugh, lowing exactly what was going through his mind. Evan was terrible with heights. I’d seen him turn pale just from standing on a clear balcony, and now Andy was asking him to go on roller coasters and Ferris wheels.
Rui, who had been quietly observing, turned to Evan with parsed lips. “Oh, this is bad.”
I stepped in, trying to save Evan from his fear. “You can sit this one out, you know. I’ll take Andy with Heath.”
“No, I can do it,” Evan quickly said.
I stared at him, surprised by his stubbornness. “Evan, you don’t have to prove anything. Andy won’t mind.”
“But I want to do this for him,” he seriously said despite the fear running in his veins.
“Alright,” I said softly, feeling a little bit amused. “But don’t say I didn’t warn
you.”
We made our way to the roller coaster, Andy bouncing with excitement and Evan walking stiffly beside him. I hung back with Rui, watching as Evan helped Andy into the seat and then climbed in beside him.
His face was already pale, his knuckles white as he gripped the safety bar.
On the other side was Heath, who was ready to tease the heck out of him.
This is going to be interesting,” Rui muttered.
“Rui, sit next to us!” Sarah exclaimed, dragging Rui between her and Ellie.
Meanwhile, I stayed at the very back with two other kids, enjoying the view.
As I watched them, I bit my lip to keep myself from laughing. The ride started with a slow climb, and I could see Evan’s tension growing with every inch we ascended. By the time we reached the top, he looked like he was about to pass out.
And then the drop came.
Evan’s scream was something else. I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Andy, on the other hand, was having the time of his life.
When the ride finally came to a stop, Evan stumbled out, his face pale. Andy was jumping with excitement, chattering about how amazing it was and how they had to go again.
“You okay?” I asked, stepping closer to Evan.
He nodded, taking a deep breath. “Yeah. I’m fine.”
I raised an eyebrow, not really convinced.
Meanwhile, Heath stood next to me. “Ready for the next ride?” he asked.
I nodded, but my gaze was still on Evan.
Next up was the Viking ship. Evan hesitated for a moment, but when Andy looked up at him with those big eyes, he caved.
“Alright,” Evan said. “Let’s do it.”
I decided to sit this one out. I’m not really a fan of the big, swinging ship.
I watched as they climbed into the ship. The ride started slowly, swinging back and forth with increasing intensity.
