Chapter 28: Overtime

“Why is this old man so difficult to contact?” I asked, massaging the
bridge of my nose.
Late into the night, I was still in my office because Mr. Miyagi decided to cancel our meeting for the third time.
“Well, he is a new granddad,” Rui said, placing my fourth cap of coffee on the table. “You have to give him some time, sir. Mr. Miyagi isn’t a conglomerate like your dad. He’s a highly–valued artist who does not work in a set
time.”
“Plenty of companies have been wanting to work with him, but he never spared them a glance,” he continued. “I think it’s fortunate that we even have a chance to communicate with him.”
I sighed and leaned against my chair, letting out a deep breath. What Rui said made a lot of sense. However, I still couldn’t help but feel impatient.
This deal was already a month into the making. My dad was pestering me not only to give him an heir but to close this deal. I knew that this deal would truly elevate our company, especially our clothing brand.
“Well, is there anything we can do tonight?” I asked.
Rui pursed his lips. “You could acquaint yourself with artful terms,” he said. “Mr. Miyagi does like people who are more art–inclined.”
I let out a deep breath and was about to go–to my bookshelf when the door slammed open, revealing none other than my sister, Ellie.
She dusted her clothes and glared at something behind her. “Geez,” she muttered. “Could you tell your guards to calm down a bit? They restrained me before I showed them my identification card. I mean, I did leave this family, but hey, I still came out of mom’s vaginal”
“Ellie,” I sighed, shaking my head. “How are you a pre–school teacher with that kind of vocabulary.”
She merely smiled.
Meanwhile, Rui stood straight as he looked at my sister. She glanced at him before walking over and petting him like a puppy.
“Rui,” she said fondly. “It’s always nice to see you.”
I shook my head and straightened my posture. “What are you doing here? I swear I’ve seen you more this week than that of the former part of the year.”
“I can’t help it,” Ellie sighed, plopping on the couch. “The circumstances have led me to you.”
“And these circumstances are?“”
“Well, for one, Dad is still bothering me about going to that party. I thought you would have handled it by now?”
I clicked my tongue. “I would have,” I muttered. “But the old man decided to cancel the meeting today…again.”
“Bummer,” Ellie said, her voice lacking empathy. “That’s one.”
My eyebrows furrowed. “There’s another reason?”
“Yup,” she said, popping her ‘p.‘
“Where’s Heather again?” she asked.

I raised one eyebrow. “You’re actually asking about my girlfriend’s whereabouts? I thought you despised her.” “Oh, don’t get me wrong,” she chuckled. “I still hate her. Ist thought you said she was in another modeling Bir.”
“She is,” I said. “Perfume ad.”
“Hmm,” Ellie humined. “I must have seen wrong then. I thought I saw her at a club a few blocks away. She was. getting cozy with another guy. It looked like they were kisstop at one point, too!”
“Did you see her clearly?” I asked.
She placed her fingers under her chin before shaking her head. “Well, no. I was dancing with my fellow teachers. Besides, that club was dark. I felt that it was her, though.”
I shook my head. “Alright,” I said. “Whatever you say.”
“Anyway, that’s it,” she said with a smile.
I narrowed my eyes at her. “I don’t buy it. You wouldn’t come here just to tell me those two things.
She smiled up at me, and it was at times like this that I was reminded she was really my younger sister.
“You see, I couldn’t catch a cab in the club. Your workplace is quite near, so I decided to come here. Mind giving me a ride home?” she asked with a wide smile.
I sighed and shook my head. Of course, she came here for something.
I glanced at Rui, causing him to freeze. “Take her home,” I said, tossing him the keys to one of my cars.
I saw him gulp but did not comment further,
“You’re not going with us, sir?” he asked, his voice strangely shaky.
“Nah,” I said. “I need to read up on what you’ve told me. Bring her home safe, alright?”
“Yay!” Ellie exclaimed. “Let’s go, Rui–bear.”
With that, she walked and wrapped her arms around Rui’s, causing him to stiffen further. It had always been like that between the two. Ellie loved messing with Rui. He must have been secretly happy when she decided to cut ties with the family.
I shook my head in amusement before going to my bookshelf.
I paused when I saw the art–related books on the shelf.
“Why do I even keep these here?” I muttered, knowing they belonged to one person. Still, it was a good decision not to throw them out. Now, I can use them for my research
I grabbed one book and scanned the pages. However, my stomach suddenly grumbled, and like perfect timing, the sign of the restaurant I was managing, ‘Asturia,‘ came into view.
I grabbed my phone and contemplated having someone get some food for me. However, I suddenly felt the need to go out into the night and get it myself.
“Yeah,” I muttered. “I’ve been holed up in this office for too long.”
With that, I grabbed my keys and wallet and went to the elevator, taking my car to go to the restaurant a few blocks away.

The night was already still, as expected, since It was past 10 PM. It was a good thing this restaurant was open until midnight. But even then, I could barge in whenever I wanted since I was the owner.
1 got out of my car and was about to walk to the front door when I suddenly heard weird noises coming from behind the building.
I frowned and walked to the source of the noise.
