I sighed and lifted my head, already dreading the conversation. “What are you doing here, Dad?” I asked, massaging the bridge of my nose.
“Why?” he asked, sitting on the large leather couch. “Can’t visit my one and only son?”

He chuckled, making me shake my head. “You really know me so well. You know that Heather’s party is coming up, right?”
“Yes,” I said. “You arranged it to be in our mansion and invited all of your friends and colleagues.”

,” he said. “Our house is big enough to host the entire city! Your mom wants to make it extravagant, too, since she’s turning 25.”
“Hmm,” I hummed. “What do you need?”
“I wanted to surprise her,” he continued, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “She was the one who brought you out of your misery and actually opened your eyes to our status. It’s because of her that you left that girl. What was her name again?”
“Dad,” I groaned. “You’re going around in circles again.”
“So impatient,” he said, shaking his head.

He didn’t finish his statement. Instead, he walked over to where I was and placed a small box on the table.
“What is this?” I asked.
“Goodness,” he muttered. “You are dumber than I had thought. Doesn’t it look familiar?”
With that, he opened the box, revealing a big, shiny diamond ring.
“The surprise is that you’re going to propose to Heather.”

“Dad,” I said, leaning against my seat and closing my eyes. Do you know how crazy you sound?”

“Not everything,” I muttered, shaking my head. He wasn’t able to hear my statement.
“Besides,” he continued. “She had picked the ring herself and loved it.”
My eyes widened, and I stood from my seat, giving him a pointed look. “You said this was a surprise.”
“Of course,” he said. “I just invited her to pick a ring as a gift.”
I massaged my temples this time, already feeling a headache coming in. I had a hunch that this surprise wasn’t a surprise at all.
“Who else knows?” I asked.
“Her parents, of course,” he chuckled. “I had to ask for their approval. They’re very accepting. In fact, they want to take this opportunity to bridge new connections to our company.”
I pursed my lips. So, this was the main incentive for him. Not our marriage, but the benefits of it.
“Just how much more money do you need, Dad?” I asked.
“You should always aim for the top,” he said, smiling at me
Just then, something flashed in my memory. I didn’t know why, but it was during my first year of dating with Julia. It was the happiest we had been–when we were innocent and young and didn’t care about what the world. thought.
“What if you’ve already reached it once?” I asked before I could comprehend it.
“Then, you topple those who are with you on the top,” my dad responded, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“Now, now,” he said, walking over to where I was and tightening my tie. “You’ve always been a competent guy, my son. That’s the reason why I entrusted the company to you at such a young age in the first place. I don’t want you to disappoint me over this trivial thing.”
With that, he walked away, leaving the ring on the table. The door slammed behind him, and I turned to look at the ring, shining as it caught the light.
I let out a deep breath and sat right back on my chair, knowing the decision was already made for me before I could even think about it.
