Chapter 41: Silver and Red
JULIA
“What?” Sarah exclaimed, chuckling. “I’m just telling the truth!”
“Whatever,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m going to get changed.”
“Julia,” she said in a scolding tone. “Look at yourself right now.”
She directed my body to face the mirror, and there, I saw my entire look. “What am I supposed to look at?” I muttered.
“A very beautiful, breeda-”
“Don’t even finish that sentence,” I warned, glaring at her
She chuckled and shook her head. “You look perfect!” she said. “I know you don’t want to capture anybody’s attention, but you’re just a natural at that. I can make you wear a rag, and you’d still get their attention.”
“Where are you going with this?” I asked.
“What I’m saying is,” she smiled, placing her hands on my shoulders. “You’re going to be okay. You’re not overdressed. Silver and gold are the themes, and this fits right in it! Heather would be predictable and go with something red, but hey, what do I know about it?”
“Anyway,” she continued. “Don’t feel out of place. You were invited. You’re not going to crash to the party. If you see any familiar faces, then ignore them. You’re different now.”
I pursed my lips and nodded, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath..
“Fine,” I muttered. “Let’s just go before I change my mind.
With that, the two of us went out of my room. There, I saw Andy watching the television. As soon as he heard the door open, he glanced toward our way.
His eyes widened as he took in my appearance.
“Mommy, you’re so pretty,” he sweetly said. I couldn’t help but smile at the compliment. Kids were the most. honest beings, so I knew Andy was telling the truth!
“See,” Sarah whispered.
“You’re going to be back before my party, right, Mommy? Andy asked.
“of
f course,” I said, ruffling my hair. “I won’t be out for too long.”
I was just going to get his gift, after all.
“Do you need me to take you there?” Sarah asked.
I shook my head. “Harper and Gianna are picking me up.”
“So, I’m assuming you don’t need me to take you back, too?”
I nodded. “Yeah, I’d head out with them–unless something really bad happens.”
She hummed. “Well, just shoot me a text if you need any help.”
“Yeah,” I muttered, and with that, I bid the two of them farewell. Just in time, I received a text from Gianna

saying they were in front of my address.
I went down the stairs and saw a shiny black car waiting outside. It wasn’t too new, but compared to Sarah’s ancient one, it definitely looked like it was just bought.
I opened the car door, and as soon as I entered, I heard whistles coming from the two of them. My eyebrows raised as I stared at them.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“What’s up?” Gianna repeated. “What’s up with you, hottie. You’re so pretty.”
My cheeks warmed up, and I tightened the shawl around my body. “Talk about yourselves,” I muttered. “You both look prettier.”
“You’re too nice, Julia,” Harper chuckled. “You look like a star–literally. The dress is very nice, too.”
“Thanks,” I said, deciding to take the compliment.
“Well, let’s go!” Gianna exclaimed. “It’s my first time being invited to a party of this caliber, and I am excited. I wonder if the food tastes good.”
“It’s probably flavorless, but hey, at least we can interact with people who have a mountain’s worth of money!” Harper joked, causing the three of us to chuckle.
It took quite long for us to arrive in front of the mansion. Whoever arranged the party, it seemed like they invited everyone in the city. There were way too many cars wanting to enter! The chauffeurs scrambled to get to where the others were.
Harper pursed her lips. “I think I’m just going to park here she said, settling on an empty spot next to a tree.
“You sure?” I asked. “Is this safe?”
“Girl,” Gianna chuckled. “There are so many cars with luxury emblems on them. I don’t think we need to worry about Harper’s car.”
Harper rolled her eyes. “Be thankful I even gave you a ride.
With that, she turned off the engine and looked toward the bustling scene.
“Shall we go?”
I let out a deep breath.
“Let’s go.”
EVANDER
“Babe,” I said, knocking on her door. I heard the sound of frantic footsteps coming from inside.
As I waited for her to open the door, I massaged my temples. My head has been aching since morning. It must be because I haven’t gotten any sleep. However, I knew it was attributed to what was going to happen at this party. Just then, the door opened, revealing Heather in a tight red dress, a full face of make–up, and half–curled hair. “Your guests are here,” I said. “Why don’t we welcome them, hmm?”
“I’m not ready,” she said, tucking the straight part of her hair behind her ears.

“It’s been four hours,” I said.
“It takes time,” she said, sounding a bit frustrated. “Well, aren’t you going to compliment how I look, babe?”
I looked at her and smiled. Of course, she looked pretty.
“You look great,” I said.
Heather let out a deep breath, as if she wasn’t satisfied with my simple compliment.
“I’ll be out in around 30 minutes,” she said.
“But the party is starting in ten,” I muttered.
“I know,” she sighed. “But it’s my birthday. They can wait. Why don’t you greet the guests for me, huh?”
I pursed my lips, not really liking the idea of greeting people I’d probably never met before. However, since I knew she was already on edge, I just nodded.
With that, I went down the stairs, sighing when I saw from the windows that our garden was already filled to the brim.
I was about to go out to greet Heather’s guests when someone suddenly came in.
Someone shining.
My breath got caught in the back of my throat.
Julia’s eyes also widened as our eyes met.
“I was just looking for the restroom,” she muttered.
