Before I could hit call button, though, a notification popped up on my screen. It was a text from her a few moments ago.
I bit my lip as I read through the text.
“Andy slept early. He’s so excited. I slept in his room because he didn’t want to be alone. I’m straining as I text this right now.”
Andy
My lip trembled as I whispered his name out loud. “Andy
I had promised him. I had promised that I’d let him meet his dad, that I’d make things right. But I’d failed. Again.. Now I had to face him, knowing I couldn’t deliver the coe thing that mattered.
I could already imagine Andy’s disappointed expression. 24 parents, too. Their potential reactions crushed me, making it harder to breathe.
I blinked back the fresh tears threatening to fall and forced myself to focus. I couldn’t stand here all night, waiting for answers that wouldn’t come. I needed to get home.
Pulling myself together as best as I could, I opened my tapp and quickly booked a ride. It said the driver was around half an hour away. I clenched my jaw, willing myself to be patient as I glanced nervously down the empty
road.
Everything about this house was so inhumane! It was even up in the mountains where no taxis could be easily accessed.
I sighed and took a seat on an unsuspecting rock
The night was eerily quiet; the only sounds were the occasional rustle of leaves and my own ragged breathing.
I couldn’t hear any music from the house, too, but I had a guess that it wasn’t going good like my situation.
A shiver ran down my spine, and I hugged myself tighter, bbing my arms to generate some warmth My clothes were still damp, and the chill was beginning to seep into my bones.
I glanced down at the app again. The car was still a few minutes out. My teeth chattered as I pinched my arms, hoping to distract myself from the cold.
And then, out of nowhere, the sound of an engine broke through the silence.
A car came to a halt just a few feet away, its headlights cutting through the darkness. I squinted, momentarily blinded, but relief washed over me.
The ride had arrived faster than I expected.
Finally.
I took a deep breath and stood up straight, brushing my damp hair out of my face as the driver stepped out of the
car.
“Thank you for being here so fast,” I said, my voice trembling slightly from the cold.
The man frowned, looking genuinely confused. “Huh?”
It was only then that I got a proper look at him.
My heart skipped a beat.

Tall, broad–shouldered, and pretty handsome. His light hair was tousled, and his soft features were illuminated by the glow of the car’s interior light.
I froze, caught off guard by his appearance and his confusion.
He tilted his head, his brows furrowing slightly as he studied me. “Are you okay?”
I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came out. I could only stare, my mind racing.
Oh, what a handsome taxi driver.
