Chapter 51: Promises

The two of us froze after Andy said those words. The crowd was shocked for a moment before they began to tease Evan and me.
Sarah shrugged. “Well, this is a game where the birthday boy gets what he wants.”
I pursed my lips and gave Sarah a sharp look. Then, I shook my head.
“I think we should play a different game.”
“This is our last game,” Sarah innocently said. “And Andy only wants one thing for this game. Right, Andy?”
My little boy nodded, looking at both of us with wide eyes.
I subtly glared at Sarah, but she just raised her hands in surrender, humor seen in her expression.
She added fuel to the fire when she suddenly started chanting

My relatives, who swore Evan was out of my league, started joining in, too. I thought they said we didn’t match together! Why can’t they make up their minds?
Gianna and Harper looked at me with amused expressions, cheering loudest among the rest. Andy wasn’t helping with his almost–teary expression.
I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. “I’m sorry, everyone. I don’t ”
“Let’s just do it,” Evan suddenly said, making my eyes go wide.
I glanced at him like he had gone crazy.
“What are you talking about?” I whispered.
“They won’t stop until we give them what they want.”

Once again, I didn’t get to finish my sentence when he suddenly leaned closer and kissed me. The parents covered their kids‘ eyes while the others squealed.
My eyes widened even more as I looked at Evan.
No, it wasn’t a kiss on the lips. It was a small, soft kiss on the cheek. However, somehow, my heart went crazy.
And Evan, being the asshole he was, didn’t pull back right away. Instead, he continued staring into my eyes, hypnotizing me.

“Of course,” I softly said, placing a kiss on his forehead. “Anything for you, my bub.”
Just then, Andy’s eyes widened. “Oh, right! I almost forgot. Mommy, let me down,” he said, patting my shoulders.
I frowned in confusion and let him down. Andy ran toward his bag, scrimmaging its contents for something. Evan and I watched as he brought out a rolled piece of paper.
My eyes softened when I realized what it was. Then, Andy ran back to where we were, his eyes focused on Evan.
“Mister,” he said with a shy smile. “I made something for you.”
Evan’s eyes widened, placing his hand on his chest. “Me?” He asked. “But it’s your birthday.”
“I just want to give it to you,” he said. “I hope you like it.”
Evan slowly unraveled the paper, and I saw how his face completely softened.
“Oh, it’s beautiful,” he said.
Sarah, who was watching from the side, pursed her lips. “Love really makes you blind. The drawing looks atrocious,”
Ellie chuckled and shook her head, nudging her shoulder.
“Is this me?” Evan asked, pointing to the taller man on the drawing.
“Yes,” Andy nodded. “Me, mommy, and mister!”
“Thank you, Andy,” Evan said, patting his head. “I’ll keep it really well.”
Andy smiled and hugged Evan, causing the latter to melt. Thank you,” he repeated, savoring the hug.
The party went by quickly. For a moment, I forgot about the problems surrounding our situation.
I just let myself enjoy it. For the first time in a long time, the stars seemed to be aligning. Even my parents looked happy.
However, all good things must come to an end.
“It was a great party, Julia. I had lots of laughs,” Ellie said, giving me a hug. “I’ll see you on Monday.”
I nodded. “Thank you for coming.”
I did the same thing with the other guests. My parents gave me a curt smile, one that made my heart feel lighter. The party emptied fairly quickly, and now, it was only Evan Sarah, and Andy with me.
Sarah glanced at the two of us and shook her head. She wen to where I was and whispered in my ear, “Talk with him more. I’ll wait for you in the car.”
I nodded, giving her a small smile of gratitude.
As soon as they were gone, Evan stood in front of me.
He cleared his throat, placing his hands inside his pocket.
“I’m sorry,” he suddenly said, taking me by surprise. “For everything.”
“For not listening to you. For giving you a hard time. But-
“I know,” I said, looking down at the ground.

I nodded once more.
I glanced to the side, where Sarah’s car was parked. “I think I have to go now…”
“I’ll make up to him,” he suddenly said. “I promise.”
My eyes widened slightly before I shook my head.
“Don’t make promises, please,” I softly said.
Especially when you couldn’t fulfill the ones you’ve made in the past.
