Chapter 52: Test the Heir

I couldn’t help but smile as I drove to my office. The day was nearly over, but I reckoned I could get some work done before I headed home.
I parked the car and got out, entering the elevator, still with a smile on my face.
“Son,” I muttered, the word tasting foreign on my lips. I had a son now…and it was with Julia.
For some reason, that didn’t dampen my smile. However, as the elevator rode up, I remembered the story she had
told.
The day I broke up with her was the day she wanted to tell me she was pregnant. I pursed my lips and felt a pang of guilt in my chest. Despite everything that went down in our relationship, I knew that what I did was wrong.
I shook my head and walked out of the elevator to go to my office.
I glanced at Rui’s office and found it empty. Well, it was beyond work hours, so he must have gone home.
However, the lights inside were still on.
I frowned. Did he forget to turn off the lights? I opened the door, expecting it to be empty. However, instead, I saw my dad sitting on my chair with a smile on his face.
I stopped in my tracks and looked at him with furrowed eyebrows.
“What are you doing here, Dad?”
“Ah, you really are my son,” he said. “I knew you would come here before you went to your house–which, by the way, you still haven’t told us where you built.”
I bit my lip to suppress my anger. “You didn’t answer my question. This is my office.”
He chuckled, the sound making me feel annoyed. “Well, I gave you everything you have in the first place. If you think about it, this is my office.”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. Of course, we were going to have this conversation again. Even after working so hard in his company for the last couple of years, he still believed it was his.
This specific enterprise wasn’t even doing well when he was the one managing it. I was the one who brought it to the top.
“Anyway,” he continued, not caring about what I felt. “I’ve done my research about your supposed son.”

My gaze snapped at him. My eyes narrowed, causing him to raise both of his hands in surrender.
“Relax, son,” he chuckled. “I’m just doing what needs to be done. Julia has always been a deceiver. Remember when you broke up with her? It was because-”
“I don’t care, Dad,” I said. “We do have a son together.”
Ah, of course,” he smiled, standing from his chair before leaning his palms against the table. His eyes didn’t leave mine as he spoke.
“Andy Johnson. Born March 23, 2019.”
“He just turned five….today! What a surprise. Happy birthday to the kiddo.”

Chapter 52. Test the Her
“Currently studying in Sunshine school.”
I slammed my fist on the table before he could continue his statement.
“You did a background check on him?” I exclaimed.
My dad smirked, straightening his posture and placing his hands behind his back.
“Again, I’m just doing what a dutiful grandfather would do” he said.
“Except,” he quickly added. “We’re not sure if that is even the case. Julia might just be lying because she ran out of money. Maybe she wants to ruin your relationship with Heather and worm her way back into our status.”
“You’re going out of line,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Oh, don’t be so emotional, Evan,” he said, shrugging me off. “You broke that girl’s heart because you knew exactly what she was capable of. How are we so sure that she has changed?”
“It’s a shame, though. I’ve been pestering you for an heir for the longest time, and here it is! He’s a boy, too. That is perfect.
“Get out of my office,” I said before I could lose my temper
“But I’m not done yet,” he chuckled. “It is perfect as long as he is your son.
“Where are you going with this?” I asked, glaring at him.
“Bring the child,” he said. “We’re going to have a paternity test.”
I couldn’t help it now. I grabbed onto his collar, causing his expression to turn serious. He looked me in the eyes and shook his head.
“You do not want to play this dangerous game, son.”
“Why are you doing this?” I spat. “I told you he is my son! There’s no other proof you need. I can tell that he is mine.”
“Lineage is not made with feelings. It is by blood. By money. By hierarchy,” he said with resolution, holding onto my fist.
He knew I was stronger than him, but he also knew I wouldn’t be able to hurt him.
“Now,” he said. “If you don’t want to comply, that is fine with me. However, do not let this ruin what you have with Heather.”
With that, he pried my hands away from his collar and fixed his wrinkled clothes before leaving my office.
I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair, dropping to the chair.
Why did he have to ruin such a good day?
“Did you have a fun time today?” I asked Andy as we arrived at our apartment.
He looked up at me with bright eyes, enthusiastically nodding.
“Yes, Mommy! It was the best.”
“I think your mommy had a fun time, too,” Sarah said, joining in on the conversation, “She got a kiss from your daddy-”

I covered her mouth before she could finish her statement.
“Is Mister going to come here tomorrow?” he asked.
Sarah frowned. “Why do you still call him Mister?” she asked.
“Because I don’t know if he’ll like it,” Andy muttered. “But like him. I want him to be my dad.”
“He is your dad, Andy,” Sarah said.
I pursed my lips and placed my hand on her shoulder, shaking my head. She understood and nodded. Andy was truly a smart kid. Even if he had begged for weeks to meet Evan, he was still cautious around him.
Just then, Andy yawned, so Sarah quickly carried him.
“I’ll do it.” I said.
“No, go ahead and rest,” she said. “You had a long day.”
I gratefully smiled. “Thank you, Sarah,” I softly said.
“Always,” she said, leading Andy to his room.
Meanwhile, I walked to mine, sitting on the bed for a couple of seconds before standing once more. For some reason, I wasn’t too tired.
In fact, I suddenly had the urge to do something I once loved a lot–paint.
I remembered I still had that failed project for Mr. Matthews. With that, I grabbed a canvas and got to work, painting like I hadn’t done for the past few years.
