Chapter 61: Dean Jones
JULIA
Dean Jones.
He looked to be a doctor now. A resident, maybe? So, it seemed that he actually got to fulfill his parents‘ dream.
My hands started shaking, and Andy was quickly alarmed. He looked at the man in front of us and glared.
However, Dean merely chuckled, raising his hand to ruffle his hair.
I stepped back before he could touch Andy.
“Woah,” Dean said, raising his hands in surrender. “Feisty now, are we?”
I pursed my lips and looked around. “We better go,” I muttered, turning around to leave him.
But then, he walked in front of us, the smell of the smoke from his cigarette wafting over us. Andy began to cough, and I quickly took out my handkerchief to cover his mouth.
“Hold onto it, bub,” I whispered.
Andy nodded and breathed through the handkerchief.
“My son has asthma,” I revealed. “Can you please let us go”
“Woah, you didn’t tell me,” he chuckled, placing the cigarette on the ground and stomping it with his foot. “I’ll do anything for our son.”

I glared at him. “What are you talking about?”
Dean smiled and stepped closer once again. My heart raced inside my chest as he placed his hand against my cheek.
Andy raised his hand and slapped it away. “Don’t touch my mommy,” he said through the handkerchief.
“Oh, what a cute kid,” Dean said. “Very protective. Just like me.”
“Dean, stop talking nonsense,” I sighed, shaking my head. Nothing happened that night. You already know that. You confirmed it. Now, you’re just being delusional.”
Dean shook his head. “I know what really happened, Julia. Nobody just bothered to tell you.”
I bit my lip. I really didn’t want to have this conversation today after everything that had happened.
“I’m going,” I said, and it seemed like he was about to stop us again when someone suddenly opened the back doors.
“Dean!” a young woman called. She had the same uniform as him. “Come on. The consultants are here. We don’t want to be scolded again.”
Dean sighed and appeared ready to argue. However, he nodded in the end. “I’ll be there in a minute.”
“You better!” the young woman called out. Then, her gaze went to me, and I swore I saw a bit of pity in her expression.
However, Dean’s next words snapped me out of my thoughts.
“We’ll see each other again, right?” he asked.
“We won’t,” I firmly said, “This is the last time we’ll be seeing each other.”

“You’re not sure about that,” he smirked.
Then, he brought out a calling card and placed it inside my pocket. “That’s my number. I’m a pediatrician resident now. If our little boy ever needs help, just give me a call.”
And with that, he turned around and entered the hospital.
As soon as he was gone, I felt instantly better.
Andy removed the handkerchief from his mouth and looked at me with wide eyes.
“Mommy, who was that?”
My expression hardened. “No one, bub, No one.”
He nodded, his gaze lingering on the door. “I don’t like him. He stinks.”
I chuckled softly, fixing his hair. “I don’t like him, too,” I muttered.

“Let’s go home, hmm?” I asked, and he nodded, leaning his head on my chest as I hailed for a taxi cab.
Fortunately, one came right away, and I told him our address.
Andy was quickly falling asleep in my arms, so I patted his back.
Meanwhile, I looked out of the windows and watched the scenery pass by. Along with that, the memories of the past came rushing back.
“I thought he went abroad,” I muttered.
At least, that was what Sarah told me. If I knew he was in that hospital, then I would go far away from it.
I still remember the first time I met Dean. We were in our first year of college, and he was the odd one out. He came from a far–away town and didn’t talk to many people.
We were coincidentally partnered up in Mr. Matthews‘ class. We became acquaintances since then. However, he called me his ‘first friend,‘ and from then on, he acted like we were close.
I didn’t see anything weird with it at first. I saw him as a guy who needed a few friends. He even opened up to me about how he chose this school because it was far away from their home.
His parents wanted him to become a doctor, but he wanted to pursue art.
When Evan became busy with his dad’s company, we started hanging out even more. It was the three of us- Sarah, Dean, and me.
Yet, it all changed in that one party.
I had gone because he told me that Evan was there. In truth he wasn’t. I didn’t know the exact details of what happened next. However, I remembered him trying to kiss the

I’m sure nothing happened. I felt it in my body.
Dean apologized the same day, saying nothing happened, too.
So, I brushed it off.
However, our relationship never mended after that. I didn’t want to see him again despite his apologies.
And now, he was back and telling me that Andy was his son
I shook my head, tightening my hold around my son. With so many people coming back, the risk of losing Andy was getting much larger.
I looked at him and smiled.
“I’ll protect you,” I muttered.
