Chapter 80: Not An Option
JULIA
“What?” I exclaimed in such a loud voice that Evan was momentarily stunned.
Evan chuckled and shook his head. “What’s gotten you so shocked?”
“Did she break up with you?” I asked. “Why? When? How? Where?”
Evan sighed. “Take it easy on the questions, Julia. To answer the first, I was the one who broke up with her.”
My mouth went agape as he continued answering my other questions.
“The reason is pretty obvious, don’t you think?” Evan asked. “I don’t think we suit each other well anymore. I owe her a lot for the times she was with me when I was alone. However, I can’t excuse how she accused you of something you didn’t do.”
“Aside from that, our interests don’t match anymore. Andys my focus now, and she can’t accept that I need to interact with you in the process.”
With every statement, it felt like I was being slapped left and right.
“When? It was last night, I guess. After the party with Mr. Miyagi.”
“For the method, I just told her how I felt.”
‘Didn’t she put up a fight?” I asked.
“She did,” Evan said. “However, what can we do? Two people can’t be in a relationship when one doesn’t want it anymore.”
“Where? At my apartment. She always went there without informing me, and at that moment, I just felt it was the right time.”
We finally arrived in front of my apartment, so he stopped the car and turned off the engine. The two of us were engulfed in silence, with Evan letting me have the moment to reflect on everything
“But she’s still at your mansion?” I asked after a while.
“I told my parents, and they were enraged,” he started off. They couldn’t accept the fact that I let our relationship go just like that. I explained, of course, but they still thought it was ridiculous. They think this is just a phase and I will get over it. Funny, right? A phase at my age.”
“Well,” I muttered, clearing my throat. “Is it a phase?”
Evan pursed his lips before shaking his head. “No,” he said.
I scoffed, turning to the side. Evan glanced at me and frowned. “You don’t believe me?” he asked.
“How can I believe you so easily?” I asked. “You didn’t even bother taking me home when I first went to your house.”
Evan pursed his lips.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered. “I just… couldn’t get the past out of my mind.”
I sighed and shook my head. There he was again with the past.
“Whatever,” I said. “The past is the past, and that’s just that. Will you really help me with the contract for Mr.

Miyagi?”
He nodded. “Yes, I’ll prepare everything so it’s foolproof.”
“Thanks,” I muttered. I looked out of the window and pursed my lips.
“I should get going now,” I added.
With that, I placed my hand over the door handle. However, before I could click it open, Evan placed his hand on my shoulder.
Without any warning, he held onto my chin and made me face him. It was gentle, and I had time to push him away. However, all I could do was stare into his eyes.
They were familiar–a gaze that brought me back to the time we were still together. It was still missing something, of course. There was some hesitation in them. Still, I got lost in his eyes.
He held my gaze for a while before he pressed a kiss on my cheek. It sent shivers down my spine.
“I’m truly sorry,” he apologized once more. “I hope after this, something changes between the two of us.”
I felt my heart race inside of my chest, and frankly, I wanted to lean in closer to his touch. However, I gently pushed him away. His eyes widened for a fraction of a second, and I could see the fear in them.
“I hope you know it’s not that easy,” I said, turning away from him. I was sure my cheeks were still red because of his kiss, but my mind was set in stone.
“Our relationship was far from perfect,” I started off. “We ended on a very bad note, too. The moment we met again, you made me feel like we could never get back together. I’m going to be honest the moment I saw you, I felt that there could still be a chance.”
“However, with how you made me feel, I’m not so sure anymore,” I continued.
“I appreciate you helping me, and I also understand your story more. I thought you were a pure coward for not standing up to your dad, but you’re also hoping for his love. Still, that does not excuse all he has demanded from me and Andy.”
He nodded, his gaze focused on his lap.
“Just because you already broke up with Heather doesn’t mean I’d go running after you.”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” he said.
“Like you said, you owe her a lot,” I continued, ignoring his statement. “I wasn’t there for the two years you were together, but it seemed like you were in quite a serious relationship. Heather must have made a lot of sacrifices, too. You must have loved her.”
Evan stayed silent, so I knew I had hit a vein.
“You can’t erase her from your mind just like that, and it’s okay. That’s how relationships are.”
“So, things might change, but I’m not going to accept you in my life again just like that,” I muttered.
“You just broke up with her. If you tell me this when you haven’t even sorted everything out, I just feel like an… option,” I said, smiling softly.
“So, for now, let’s keep our relationship like that. Professional.”
Evan hadn’t gotten another word out, but I could tell he was hurt by my words. Still, he didn’t say anything, so I also knew he understood.

With that, I grabbed something from my bag–an invitation letter.
‘Andy’s school will be having a family event on Monday,” Isaid. “If you can afford to miss work, you should join us. It’ll be in the morning.”
I finally opened the door and went out, feeling like my heart was significantly lighter than before.
