Chapter 32
Lindsey listened quietly without butting in. Before long, they reached the outskirts of town, and Jeffrey was the first to get out of the car. “We’re here.”
Following his gaze, Lindsey saw a charming, traditional–style house surrounded by a large yard. Sunny spots had wooden racks filled with drying items. A gentle breeze carried the aroma of herbs, giving the place an almost mystical aura.
Jeffrey knocked on the knocker. “I’m coming, hurry and open the door!”
“Why all the noise? I’m trying to nap!” An old man with white hair opened the door, scolding Jeffrey before finally looking at the other two.
But when his eyes landed on Lindsey, they stayed there. He brushed Jeffrey aside and walked directly toward Lindsey. “You’ve come back?”
Lindsey shrank back a little and felt uneasy. Shawn wrapped his arm around her shoulders just in time. Lindsey blinked and nervously asked, “Mr. Grier? Do you know me?”
Hearing her voice, Mr. Grier snapped out of it and shook his head. “No, wait, you’re not her!”
He chuckled at himself, “I’m getting senile. How could someone look the same after twenty years?”
Mr. Grier welcomed the group into the yard and gave Jeffrey a stern look to get him to make some coffee. He looked at Lindsey and asked, “What’s your name?”
“Hello, Mr. Grier, I’m Lindsey,” Lindsey replied.
“So you don’t mind if I call you Lindsey, right? Honestly, you look just like an old friend of mine. When I first saw you, I thought she had come back,” Mr. Grier said.
Lindsey nodded; she had already guessed that. After hesitating for a moment, she asked, “Is the old friend you’re talking about Elaine?”
Mr. Grier was taken aback, looking at Lindsey with excitement. “You know her?”
“Yes, Elaine is my mother.” Lindsey nodded. She always thought Elaine was just an ordinary rich girl, but now it seemed there was more to her than
that.
Mr. Grier was so excited that his hands were shaking. “How is your mother now? Where is she? It’s been almost twenty years since I last saw her!”
Lindsey felt compassion and said quietly, “She passed away due to an illness.”
Mr. Grier’s voice suddenly rose. “How could she pass away from an illness? If she was sick, she should’ve come to me. Even if she was barely breathing, I could’ve saved her!” His expression turned gloomy. “She was always so stubborn.”
Lindsey wanted to learn more about Elaine, so she asked, “Mr. Grier, did something happen to my mom twenty years ago?”
Since she knew such remarkable people, Elaine herself must have been extraordinary. But what Lindsey couldn’t understand was why someone as exceptional as Elaine would choose to marry Anthony. They seemed like they were from two completely different worlds.
Mr. Grier kept sighing. “It’s a long story that starts with a mission. At that time, Elaine was in charge of planning the whole operation.”
Just then, a sharp bird call echoed. Mr. Grier was startled and refused to say more. Lindsey frowned and looked at the sky. There weren’t any birds
around, and she found the bird call suspicious.
“Here it comes. Here’s the coffee! Be careful, it’s hot!” Jeffrey said as he handed a cup of coffee to Lindsey from the tray.
Lindsey quickly stood up to take the coffee, and as she moved, a feather–shaped necklace on her neck became visible. Mr. Grier was shocked as he stared at Lindsey. “How do you have this necklace?”
“Dennis said it was my mom’s keepsake, so he gave it to me,” Lindsey replied truthfully,
After saying that, she realized something wasn’t right. “Mr. Grier, is there something wrong with this necklace?”
Mr. Grier just burst out laughing. “There’s a big issue with that necklace, but since you’re already wearing it, just keep wearing it without worry!”
Lindsey was more confused and asked, “What is the big issue? Could you tell me, Mr. Grier?”
“This is the emblem of our organization. Wearing it gives you rights, but you also have matching responsibilities. However, you’re still young, so don’t stress about it. If you’re curious, come visit me next week,” Mr. Grier said with a smile, but Lindsey couldn’t find any joy.

Chapter 32
Lindsey thought, ‘I don’t have any power. And those responsibilities, what are they? And what kind of organization is it?‘ Things seemed to be getting more complicated step by step, and she felt she was getting drawn into it without fully understanding the reasons.
Seeing Mr. Grier chatting happily, Jeffrey quickly brought out Claire’s medical records and said, “How about taking a look at this patient? Are you interested in showing off your skills?”
Mr. Grier didn’t even look at it and waved his hand dismissively. “Not interested. I’m old, with bad eyesight. I can’t even read properly, let alone do surgery. I’d mess things up.”
“Come on, that’s just an excuse. You’ve been saying this same thing for twenty years now. Aren’t you tired of it?” Jeffrey complained, not getting why his grandfather was so withdrawn from the world.
“Mr. Grier, my friend is the one who’s sick. Could you please help save her?” Lindsey asked.
Hearing Lindsey say that, Mr. Grier looked over in surprise. “Is she a friend of yours, Lindsey?”
Lindsey nodded. Mr. Grier reached out his hand and said to Jeffrey, “Let me see those scans.” Jeffrey eagerly handed them over.
After looking them over, Mr. Grier asked Lindsey, “Do you want me to help her?”
Lindsey nodded quickly. “Yes, please.”
Jeffrey was surprised as he looked at Mr. Grier. He thought, ‘Is he going to come out of retirement?‘
“Alright, you want me to help, so I will!” Mr. Grier laughed, but Lindsey couldn’t shake the feeling that his smile had a hint of mischief.
“Alright, you all go ahead first. I’ll pack up my things and come over,” Mr. Grier said, shooing them out.
Jeffrey was excited, not wanting to wait any longer. She urged him, “What do you need to prepare? The hospital has everything, just come with us!”
Mr. Grier glared at him. “What do you know!”
Jeffrey was shooed out by Mr. Grier. He looked at Lindsey with a grumble. “Lindsey, you’re good. He’s been retired for over twenty years, and no one could get him back, but one word made him agree! You’re amazing! I’ll be with you!”
As Jeffrey tried to move closer to Lindsey, he was quickly pushed back by Shawn, who had his hand on Lindsey’s head. “Keep your distance!”
Jeffrey pouted unhappily, “You’re totally forgetting your old friends for a girl, Shawn!”
Shortly after Lindsey and her friends left. Mr. Grier’s door was pushed open again. A middle–aged man in a suit came in. If Lindsey had been there, she would have recognized him as the guy who bumped into her at the airport.
