Chapter 74
La predicament.
The truth was, Elaine had already secretly called off her engagement with Finley, but they hadn’t gotten around to telling him yet. And now, here he was, specifically asking to see her. It couldn’t be more awkward, especially with Finley demanding to meet Elaine at this very moment.
Thankfully, Harlan had just returned, so at least she had someone to consult about this mess.
Tracy, looking slightly anxious, turned to her son. “Harlan, do you think Finley is here because of what happened at the charity event? Maybe he saw how close Kingsley and Elaine were, and now he’s gotten suspicious. He’s probably come to the Years family to question us. And with Elaine not home she’s s grown so stubborn lately–she won’t listen to a word I say
She sighed in frustration and added. “I really don’t know what’s gotten into her. Ever since Shawn kicked her out, she’s been different. And now, no matter what I say, she snaps back. It’s driving me mad. It’s like she’s obsessed with the idea that I favor Bianca over her. Well, I’ll just wait and see how far she’ll push me.”
Tracy had always thought her actions were justified. She had raised Bunca for nearly twenty years, and that bond was something Elaine would never fully understand.
So, whenever Bianca
faced even the slightest injustice, or anything even remotely upsetting. Tracy couldn’t help but take it out on Elaine. Too bad, there’s no such thing as a rewind” button in life. Tracy wouldn’t realize the full meaning of that phrase until much later.
Harlan, already overwhelmed with all that had happened with Elaine, felt his temper flaring, “Mom, you didn’t… you didn’t really leave Finley in the dark about Elaine calling off the engagement, did you? You know Kingsley is about to publicly announce his marriage to Elaine–he could be manying her any day now, If Finley hasn’t been told the truth all along, and he causes a scene, it’ll be a total disaster. Not only will the whole Scott family be a laughingstock in high society, but the Years family will get dragged into it ton. And if Kingsley or Grace gri upset… we’ll have made enemies with both families. We can’t afford that. We really can’t afford that
Tracy, feeling some pressure from Harlan’s words, still seemed uneasy. “I don’t want to do this either, but your grandmother has been pushing for Hianca and Finley to get back together. You know how the Scott family looks down on Bunca, thinking she’s not real Years blood, so they’re not ready to accept her as their daughter–in–law. We figured if we didn’t tell Finley or the Scouts about the annulment just yet. Bianca and Finley could stay in touch through their families, rekindle their relationship, and then we’d break the news when the time was night.”
She sighed, her voice softening “I was hoping it would all work out in the end… that everyone would be happy. Isn’t that better?
But Harlan wasn’t convinced. “Ugh, mom, now isn’t the time for this. We need to deal with Finley first. If we tell him the truth about Elaine calling off the engagement now, his pride will be bruised. He’ll get angry. But if he’s with Blanca, then maybe… maybe he won’t care so much when he finds out What do you think?”
Tracy nodded, but then she continued, “As for the Morgans, your future father–in–law told me himself… I think Kingsley’s interest in Elaine is just a passing fancy. How could someone like him marry a woman who’s so different from him in every way! Elame couldn’t even measure up to Finley, so how could she be good enough for Kingsley!”
Harlan clenched his jaw, his forehead knotting in frustration. He hadn’t expected Daisy’s family to get involved. Something didn’t sit right with him about all this. But at this point, there was no turning back. He’d just have to roll with it, even if it felt wrong.
Finally, he gave a reluctant nod. “Alright, let’s let Finley in. We’ll handle it when he’s here”
Tracy sighed in relief. “Good”
Not long after, the news spread throughout the Yeats family that Finley had come to the house, specifically asking for Elaine.
The servants were unterly stunned. For someone of Finley’s status heir to one of the top families–his interest in Elaine seemed almost unreal. They had always believed Elaine was out of his league, so they couldn’t help but gossip about it
But no one could deny that Elaine didn’t deserve him. That was the consensus among the staff.
With Elaine absent, Tracy and Harlan had no choice but to welcome their guest and make up whatever excuses they could to buy some time. No matter what, they needed to delay this as long as possible.
Meanwhile, in the study. Ella’s eyes sparkled when she heard Finley had arrived. A plan quickly formed in her mind.
“Finley’s here! Well, then, someone should tell B Bianca to come down and look her best.”
“Yes, grandma”

Chapter 71
Ella was unaware that Finley had come specifically to see Elaine. Of course, with her favorite potential son–in–law at the door, she wanted Bianca to seire the opportunity and spend time with Finley, hoping to rekindle their relationship. Ella was sure that with enough time, feelings would
Banca, excited at the prospect that Finley had come for her, rushed to change into something more flattering. Staring at herself in the mirror. couldn’t help but smile at the perfection of her beauty. She knew her looks were irresistible–her flawless face was the perfect weapon to win over any man, and she was certain it would be enough to keep Finley by her side.
But deep down, Elaine knew better. If it weren’t for the novel’s constraints–if only the plot allowed for a barem–Bianca’s beauty and popularity. with men would guarantee her a string of suitors. She’d be the main character of a romance drama, with a whole cast of men vying for her affection. And as for the secondary characters–especially Elaine, the ultimate “villainess“-she’d be the one trampled beneath Bianca’s heel.
Outwardly, Bianca appeared sweet and harmless, but in reality, her methods were far more devious than anyone e could imagine.
But with Elaine’s rebirth and awakening, Finley’s heart seemed to be wavering like never before. Blanca noticed it, and now, she was plotting her
next move
Finley could not, under any circumstances, be allowed to waver in his feelings for her.
Since he had come to see her, she would certainly make the most of this chance to deepen their connection.
Finley was ushered into the Yeats familly’s living room, sipping coffee, his brow furrowed, his expression tense. Before coming here, he had tried to investigate Kingsley, but all his efforts had been in vain.
Kingsley was more elusive than he had imagined.
And now, what was the true nature of Kingsley and Elaine’s relationship?
The memory of their intimate exchanges at the charity event burned like a wildfire in his chest, threatening to consume his reason.
Elaine, you really know how to provoke me.
As his fiancée, you’re out there flirting with h other men? How do you expect me to accept this?
He couldn’t deny it–Elaine had succeeded in gering his attention. She had done it
A batter smile tugged at his lips as he wondered how Flaine would explain herself when they finally met.
“Finley.”
Harlan’s voice broke through Finley’s thoughts
Finley nodded, his eyes colder than before. “Harlan”
When he noticed that Elaine wasn’t there, his frown deepened. Tracy, Harlan, where is Elaine?”
“Elaine…” Harlan hesitated. “She’s not home. Do you u need to speak with her? I can have her call you when she returns.”
Finley’s patience was wearing thin. “Where is she now?”
Harlan sighed, clearly at a loss. “I don’t know, Elaine’s an adult, and even as her brother, I can’t keep track of her every move. You understand, right”
