Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Natalie had always been a decent sleeper, and she was genuinely worried she might pass out until morning
car to rest.
but the doors were locked. With Myla nowhere in sight, she didn’t dare wake Jona
Initially, she’d thought of heading back to the car to for the keys
Jonas to ask
After a moment of brainstorming, she came up with a solution–tying the sleeve of her camouflage jacket to his ankle and then to her wrist.
That way, when Jonas got up, the tug on the sleeve would wake her too.
It sounded brilliant in theory, but in practice, things weren’t going so smoothly.
Jonas was wearing those massive military boots, the soles resting on the edge of the mat while the rest of his foot sunk into the soft padding. To loop the sleeve around his ankle. Natalie would need to lift his foot slightly.
She eyed the boots, which looked more like small boats, and hesitated. Stretching out her hand, she mimicked the movement a few times, but the sheer size of the task left her at a loss.
After a bit of consideration, she decided to carefully slip her right fingers into the boot’s edge, hooking under the leather to lift it just enough. She tried pulling gently but quickly realized she couldn’t muster enough strength
Switching tactics, the slapped her left hand in as well, both hands pulling upward. The hoot shifted slightly, creating a tiny gap between the sole and the mat, but now her hands were occupied, leaving her no way to slide the sleeve underneath
With a quiet sigh of frustration, Natalie withdrew her hands and sat back, determined to try again.
This time, she pressed the jacket sleeve to the ground with her knee, planning to lift his leg just enough to nudge the fabric through.
The idea seemed solid, but the execution left much to be desired. While she was kneeling, her hands barely had the leverage to pull with any real force.
She gave it her all, her arms straining as though she were lifting a hundred–pound weight. But the more effort she poured into it, the heavier his leg seemed to grow–as if some invisible force were pushing it down.
That unsettling thought joked through her mind, making her shiver. Her heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively turned to glance behind her.
Jonas was still leaning against the mat, utterly unmoving. The faint moonlight draped over him like a silvery veil, softening the harsh lines of his rugged features. His lashes, thick and impossibly long, cast delicate shadows over his cheekbones.

His straight nose and slightly pursed lips gave him an air of quiet vulnerability. He looked, for all the world, like
Natalie stared at him for a moment, studying his serene expression. Assured that he hadn’t woken up, she let out a slow breath and shifted her focus back to the task at hand.
Her determination had become a game of endurance, each passing second testing her patience. The chill of the night seeped deeper into her skin. but the relentless pull of sleep wasn’t far behind. She shook her head, trying to ward off the drowsiness creeping in like an unstoppable tide.
This is it she thought, gritting her teeth. One last try: Natalie decided to go for broke–she would lift Jonas’s lower leg entirely and slip the sleeve under in one swift motion.
Unbeknownst to Natalie, Jonas’s eyes slowly flickered open behind her, his gaze a mix of disdain and puzzlement as he watched her movements.
Jonas hadn’t slept at all. With a stranger he suspected of being a spy so close, there was no way he’d let his guard down. He was simply lying in wait, ready to see if she’d make a move.
He was the most patient hunter, fully prepared to endure a sleepless night with Natalie if that’s what it took. Yet, it wasn’t long before the faint rustle of movement caught his attention
Natalie, thinking she was being quiet, had completely forgotten about the compressed biscuit in her pocket. Each tiny shift she made caused the crinkling plastic to rub together, the noise jarring and almost pinpoint–accurate in his finely tuned ears, like a tracking beacon.
Jonas had steeled himself for Natalie to suddenly attack him–maybe slit his throat or stab him in the heart. But what he hadn’t anticipated was her apparent fascination with his feet.
The thin summer camouflage pants he wore offered little barrier, and when her cool fingers first slipped under the edge of his boot, he remained still, curious about what game she was playing

Then she did in again–this time, using both hands to grip the edge of his boot and lift his leg. The control he prided himself on suddenly wavered For the first time in years, Jonas found himself caught off gun!.
Now, wide awake, he watched her from beneath hooded eyes. Natalie was crouched over, her lips slightly parted in concentration as she struggled
Im to lift his leg. Her backside jutted out as she adjusted her position, giving her an almost absantly determined air
Jonas’s mind raced with possibilities, none of them logical. Is she trying to plant a tracker on me?‘ he wondered, a skeptical frown crossing his face.
He considered shutting his eyes and continuing his act, letting her actions play out. Hat when her movements became even clumsier–her upper body leaning further down, pressing closer to his leg–his thoughts took a turn down an inappropriate path
“That angle… The image m his mind veered into territory that was anything but professional Jonas cursed under his breath, his control slipping

Realizing what appropriate stuff he was thinking, be stifled a laugh and finally broke his silence with a low, mocking chuckle. Before she could react, he suddenly lifted the leg she had been holding
He thought with smug realization. Now I get it. Natalie’s trying to seduce me
Natalie froze at the sound of his senf, the sharp, unexpected nose starthing her.
But it was nothing compared to the sheer panic that coursed through her when his powerful leg suddenly lifted together with her so easily.
The sensation was akin to standing in an empty stairwell, only to feel an icy breath at the nape of her neck–unnerving and bone–chilling
Her throat tightened, the warge of terror swallowing her scream before it could escape, Instinct took over, and Natalie loosen fice. But just as she turned, a sun–kissed arm snaked around her waist and pulled her back with unyielding force.
The moment the firm grip constricted the soft curve of her abdomen, Natalie felt the world tilt violently.

A flash of silvery moonlight streaked before her eyes as her body collided with the plush mattress beneath her, the impact sending a faint bounce through its surface.
Before she could fully grasp the situation, Jonas’s towering, muscular frame loomed above her, casting a deep shadow that swallowed her whole. His presence was overwhelming, every inch of his powerful physique enveloping her petite form like a predator comering its prey
And she helpless and breathless–was pinned beneath him in a position so vulnerable, so uncomfortably submissive, it felt like an unspoken
Natalie reacted on instinct, wriggling against him in a frantic attempt to free herself. Her hands moved, only for her to realize, to her growing dread, that at some point, Jonas had captured her wrists and pinned them above her head.
His calloused fingers, rough and commanding, pressed against her skin with an unrelerating dominance that sent her pulse skittering wildly
beneath his touch.
The steady thrum of his heartbeat echoed where their skin met, a reminder of just how close they were. The searing heat of his body seeped through the thin fabric, branding her thighs where they brushed against his
Jonas, utterly unfazed by her resistance, tightened his hold. His left hand slid confidently around her waist, his fingers spanning the curve of her body as he hoisted her upward, forcing their forms into a seamless, intimate alignment.
A chilling fear, faint and subtle, crept up from the soles of her feet, slithering through her veins until it pricked at her scalp.
He leaned in suddenly, his face lowering until it was mere inches from hers. The moonlight spilled across the sharp lines of his profile. The interplay of light and shadow painted his features with an almost ethereal intersity, highlighting the untamed defunce smoldering in his deep–set
And his smile—that maddeningly faint, almost lazy curve of his lips–was enough to send shivers down her spine:
