Chapter 13:
My pregnancy has been smooth so far. The little twins inside me were well–behaved, as if they knew their mother was preparing to be the best she could for them. It felt like they understood how much I loved them and wanted only the best for them. I was beyond grateful for a healthy pregnancy and my growing babies.
I still remember the moment I found out I was expecting. The overwhelming happiness, the anticipation of meeting them. And now, months later, I could feel their tiny kicks and movements, reminding me every day that they were real, that they were mine.
Even though I was doing this alone, I hoped my babies would grow up strong and healthy.
That moming, I made a quick stop at the hospital before heading to the office for my routine check up. I was eager to see their little faces on the ultrasound and maybe even find out their gender.!
Whatever the outcome, I would welcome them with joy.
Just as I was about to get into my car in the basement parking lot, a familiar voice called out
“Hey!”
I turned to see Nathan approaching me.
“Heading to work this early?” he asked, a curious look on his face.
I nodded. “I have a doctor’s appointment for my pregnancy check–up first.“2
His
eyes flickered to my stomach, now visibly bigger than the last time we met. It had been a month since I last saw him, and honestly, I hadn’t given much thought to where he had been. But yesterday, I noticed the lights were back on in his apartment unit, so know he had returned.
“Can I come with you?” he asked with a grin. “I want to see them too. I bet they’re just as adorable as their mother“?
I chuckled at his enthusiasm. “Don’t you have work?“)
“I work from home–only go to the office occasionally
I shrugged. There was no harm in letting Nathan accompany me. He had always been kind to me, after all.
During the drive, Nathan insisted on taking the wheel. I let him, figuring it was only fair since he was tagging along
The hospital was busy, as expected at the start of the week, but since I had an appointment with Dr. Liam, I didn’t have to wait long. Thirty minutes at most!
While waiting. Nathan suggested grabbing breakfast at the hospital canteen. Since he hadn’t eaten yet, I agreed and ordered a salad to keep him company. He went for fish and chips.”
“So, how far along are you now?” Nathan asked between bites of his fries,
“Six months,” I replied with a smile.
I loved when people asked about my pregnancy. It made me feel proud–proud of my babies, proud of myself for pushing through.
Nathan gave me a brief look before smirking. “Now I believe you’re carrying twins. Were you a twin too?”
I stirred my salad absentmindedly “Yeah. My mom said I was supposed to have a twin, but he didn’t make it.”
Nathan’s expression softened, “I see… If you had, I’d be struggling to choose between you and your twin sister.”
I laughed, shaking my head. His teasing always had a way of lifting my mood
Nathan had a cheerful, easygoing nature that somehow comforted me. But despite that, I wasn’t the type to let people in so easily. I had learned my lesson the hard way.”
I glanced at my watch. We had been in the canteen for over fifteen minutes. Wiping my mouth with a tissue, I stood up.
“Looks like it’s almost my tum“:
“Give me a sec. I need to hit the restroom,” Nathan said before jogging off.
I sighed and sat back down, feeling too tired to stand while waiting.
That’s when I heard it. A voice I had been avoiding for so long.!!
“Sharon? Is that you?”
My body tensed
Grace
I reluctantly looked up She stood a few feet away, staring at me in shock. And beside her–X
Edgar
His eyes locked onto my stomach, his expression unreadable.
“You’re pregnant?” Grace asked, her voice barely above a whisper
She looked pale, like she was connecting the dots in her head. Like she was afraid of what it meant…
I could see it in her eyes–she was wondering if I was carrying Edgar’s child.
“Sorry for the wait,” Nathan’s voice cut in as he returned, completely unfazed by the unexpected company. He walked straight to me, smiling warmly before turning to Edgar and Grace. “Oh, hey”
Then, as if it was the most natural thing in the world, Nathan placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and looked at me with a tendemess that made my stomach flo
I hesitated for a split second, then nodded
As I stepped forward, Edgar suddenly blocked my path.!!
Froze
Nathan immediately placed a protective arm around me, his gaze warning Edgar to back off.
Edgar didn’t. His sharp eyes flicked between Nathan and me, his expression unreadable before he finally asked, “Are you two…. together?”
Nathan shrugged “Is there a problem?”
Edgar’s gaze shifted back to me. But this time, it wasn’t just at me–it was at my stomach,
He was trying to piece it together. Trying to figure out whose child I was carrying.
Then, without warning. Nathan placed a hand over my belly, his touch gentle, as it cradling something precious.
I sucked in a sharp breath, my heart racing.
“We’re here for our babies‘ routine check–up,” Nathan said casually. “She’s carrying twins. Isn’t that wonderful news?“.
Silence.
Edgar didn’t move. He didn’t speak. His expression was unreadable, his eyes locked onto my stomach like it held the answer to every question in his mind.S
I bit my lip, feeling the weight of his stare. Please don’t ask anything else. Please don’t make this worse.X
Then, Edgar’s gaze lifted to meet mine, and I felt the sharp sting of his next words before they even left his lips.
“So all this time, I wasn’t the only one having an affair? His voice was low, laced with quiet venom
I stiffened
Even now, he found a way to corner me. To make me the villain,
Nathan remained silent, not correcting the assumption. I should be grateful. But at the same time, I knew–this just threw me into
another storm
Edgar let out a bitter chuckle, his gaze filled with disdain. The same look he had always given me since the divorce
“You act like the victim,” he scoffed. “But you’re no better. What is this?” He gestured at Nathan before his gaze dropped back to my stomach. “You even got pregnant with him?”
He shook his head, letting out a sharp laugh. “You’re disgusting. Sharon Absolutely disgusting”
