Chapter 9
I ignored Lowell’s gaze, simply walking straight out the door.
“Fine, let’s go to the coffee shop. Don’t disturb my family’s rest,” I said.
Ten minutes later, Lowell and I arrived at the coffee shop. We had barely sat down when the server come over, holding a large bouquet of
roses.
Lowell took the flowers, flashing a sheepish smile as he presented them to me,
“I don’t know much about flowers, so I’ve never given them before. I don’t even know if you like them. If you do, I’ll send you some every week.
“I also talked to Kaitlynn about the conflict you two had. She doesn’t blame you anymore. I’ll keep my distance from her. You don’t need to worry.
“Tye made up my mind. I’ll spend the next couple of days with you here. We can head home the day after tomorrow”
I crossed my arms and indifferently stared at Lowell, refusing to take the roses. Looking at him awkwardly holding them out, I sneered.
“Lowell, stop pretending. How can you don’t know anything about flowers? Do you think I’ll buy that?
“I’m not going back with you, and I have no interest in fighting over a scumbag like you. Whether you accept it or not, it’s over between us.”

Hearing my words, Lowell jumped to his feet, his face filled with disbelief.
“What do you mean? Do you think after eight years of marriage, you can just leave? Is this all because of Kaitlynn? Do you hate her that much?
“If that was the case, I’ll fire her tomorrow! Are you satisfied?
“I’ve never mistreated you in all these years. It was an accident that I hit you. You don’t need to…
A loud slap cut him off.
Lowell stopped talking, and his eyes widened in shock.
I moved my wrist nonchalantly, staring at his reddening left cheek, my voice devoid of warmth.
“It is an accident, too.”
Lowell stood frozen for a long time.
He had never imagined that I would treat him like this.
He stared straight into my eyes, his gaze almost piercing through me, but he could no longer find any trace of love in them.
Ignoring his broken expression, I spoke again.
“Lowell, I don’t love you a
anymore.
“Who you fire or who you
you marry is none of my concern. Don’t bother informing me.
“If you want to sign the divorce papers, go ahead. If not, let’s go through the courts. Either way, we’re done.”
With that, I stood up to leave.
But before I could take a step, Lowell suddenly pulled me from behind, holding me tightly in his arms.
His voice trembled, unable to contain the desperation.
“Bessie, you can’t do this to me…
w can you just leave me? Did I agree to this?
“How can
“Didn’t you say you liked me and wanted to be with me forever?
“When I was sick and had surgery, you cried and promised you would never leave me. Was that all a llo??*
I shoved him away with all my strength, fixing my hair, then turned to smile at him.
“That was a long time ago. I’ve forgotten all about it. Why are you still holding on?”
Lowell had wanted to argue further, but at those words, he froze, his head lowering slowly.
When he looked up again, his eyes were bloodshot.
He wiped his face with an indifferent motion and said in a dismissive tone, “How could I have taken you seriously? You’re overthinking it. I never took it seriously”
With that he tossed the bouquet aside and strode off into the night.
