Chapter 9
Sophia’s response came in the form of a quiet laugh, low and disdainful. ‘Pii.”
Her eyes, sharp and piercing, swept over Ethan like she was examining a fool. Her smirk deepened, radiating icy mockery, “A few months without sering you, Mr. Baker, and it seems you’ve turned into even more of a clown
Ethan’s frown deepened as he studied her, searching her face for any hint of pretense–any trace of the old Sophia who had once looked at him with unwavering devotion.
But there was nothing. No longing. No sorrow. Just calm, unyielding indifference.
Sophia’s lips curved slightly, her voice light yet laced with ridicule. “What’s the matter, Mr. Baker? You’ve fallen so far that the only way you can feel important is by tearing down your ex2”
Ethan’s face darkened immediately, his eyes clouding with an oppressive shadow as the mocking laughter died down.
Sherry, who had been holding back, finally snapped. With an exaggerated grimace of disgust, she grabbed Sophia’s arm and yanked her behind her as she stepped forward
“Look at you!” Sherry sneered, jabbing a finger at Ethan. “Are you too busy basking in your delusions? Self–absorbed doesn’t even begin to cover it. A sleary guy and a fake, two–faced bimbo A MATCH MADE IN HELL! Do us all a favor and lock yourselves away where the rest of us don’t have to see your disgusting drama?”
She rolled her eyes into her skull before fixing Ethan with a withering glare. “My girl is here for me today. You’re the one who can’t seem to let go, following her around like a rejected puppy. Who’s projecting now!”
Her rapid–fire insults, dripping with mockery, hit Erhan like a string of slips to the face.
His jaw tightened, and his entire body tensed with fury as the surrounding crowd stifled gasps and awkward chuckles.
Without waiting for a response, Sherry spun on her heel, tugging Sophia aling. “Come on, girl. We’re waiting our time with these clowns”
Chloe face twisted with anger as she watched them walk away, her hands balling into fists. “You–how dare your she shricked, but her word fell flat, unable to stop their retreating
Turning to Eilun, Chloe opened her mouth to vent her frustration and possibly sow doubt about Sophia. But when she caught sight of Ethan’s expression, her breath hitched.
He wasn’t listening. His dark eyes were fixed on Sophia, an unfathomable intensity swirling within them.
A spike of panic shot through Chloe as she clung tightly to his arm.
“Ethan,” she murmured, her voice trembling with forced strength, “are you… are you thinking about her again?” Ethan’s sharp gaze snapped back to Chloe. Her watery eyes were filled with sadness and determination, a fragile attempt to appear strong despite her distress.
“Don’t be ridiculous” Ethan replied, tapping her nose lightly in what he thought was a reassuring gesture. “The only reason I let her sniff around me was because I thought she was the real Miss Stewan. Do you think I would’ve bothered otherwise?”
Despite his words, his eyes shifted back in the direction Sophia had gone, narrowing slightly. “Although… the woman with her looked familiar. I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before.”
Chloe’s laugh was quick and dismissive “Anyone associating with HER? Probably another slum rai….”
Her comment had barely escaped her lips before she froze, realizing her mistake.
She scrambled to cover it up, her tone suddenly sweet. “I mean… that woman was stunning. If you’d met someone like her before, you’d definitely remember, right”
Ethan’s frown deepened, her earlier words lingering in his mind. Something about the phrase “slum rat” left him unsettled, though he couldn’t explain why. He let it slide and instead focused on a detail that had been nagging him.
“The Abyss isn’t hosting just anyone tonight, Ethan said evenly. “I heard almost all of Virca’s elite are here, possibly even Yeats. I mean, THE
